There once lived a giant called Kippemose. He lived on a lonely farm inthe mountains. He was not fierce. Indeed, he was as kind and gentle as a giantcould be. He liked children and was fond ofanimals. He was exceptionally goodat telling stories. He was always ready to help anyone, large or small. However,he was friendless. When he went to the town to do his shopping, everyone ran 5away from him. Busy streets emptied in a jiffy. Everyone ran home, bolted theirdoors and closed all their windows even on hot summer days.
Kippemose shouted, "Don't run away! I'll not hurt you! Please don't runaway, I like little people. I've only come to do my shopping. Please come out. I'lltell you a good story about adragon and a mermaid." 10
It was no use. The town stayed silent and empty, and the doors and
windows stayed firmly closed. Poor Kippemose wanted so much to have
someone to talk to. He felt so lonely that he often sat down in the town square
and cried his heart out. You would think someone would take pity on him but noone everdid. He simply could not understand it. He even tried going to another 15town, far across the mountains butthe same thing justhappened again.
"Has the entire world gone mad?" said Kippemose to himself and took
his solitary way home.
The truth was that the people were not afraid of Kippernose and they had
notgone mad either. The truth was that Kippernose had not had a single bath in 20
a hundred years or more! The poor fellow earned such a stink wherever he went
that everyone with a nose on his face ran for cover at the first whiff. Oh, how
that giant reeked!
Poor Kippemose had been shunned by the town people ever since his
mother, who was his main caregiver, had passed away. Kippemose was as 25
helpless as a newborn baby without her.
Adapted from "The Story of Giant Kippemose" by John Cunl'iffe

Alexander was a new baby. He was so new that all his aunts, uncles andcousins came to see him. Mother unwrapped him, and theycounted his ten toesand ten fingers, and said how tiny and pink they were. Everyone said, "He'sbeautiful!"
Everyone, that is, except his big sister, Liselotte. 5
Liselotte did not think Alexander was beautiful at all. How could he be,when he had no teeth and hardly any hair? Besides that, he made wet and
smelly messes in his nappy, and when he was hungry, he screamed so loudlyyou could hear him all over the house.
Liselotte did not wear nappies any more, even at night, and she was not 10
allowed to scream. Even when she was hungry, she had to say 'please' and
'thank you'. She had ten toes and ten fingers, like Alexander, but the aunts and
uncles and cousins did not say anything about that. They were too busy fussingover Alexander.
As soon as they went away, Liselotte said, "I don't like Alexander. Can we 15
put him back in your tummy?"
"No," said Mother. "Once a baby is born, he can't go back. Alexander is
yourown little baby brother. You'll be able to playwith him soon."
That night, Alexander cried. Mother changed his nappy and fed him, but
he still cried. Father walked up and down holding him, but he still cried. He was 20
crying when Liselotte went to bed, and he was crying when she woke up. He had
cried all night
By the time the family sat down to breakfast, he was screaming.
