UPDATE LETTER WITH CONFIRMED DATES OF TRAINING THROUGH THE SCHOOL
YEAR
Dear Parent/Guardian
Now your son/daughter has chosen to participate in The Award please see
below a reminder of what it entails and confirmed dates of the training
schedule.
There are four sections that have to be completed before being put forward
for the award.
Section Volunteering Skill Physical Expeditions
Time involved 6 months One for 6 months one for

A further 6 months in either the Service or the longer of the
skills/physical sections, (ie the one they choose to do for 6months)
Pupils will come to us period 6 each Friday and during this time we will trainthem in all aspects of navigation, camp craft, safety and emergency so they
are able to safely participate in the expeditions. This will involve some
training out of school hours which is compulsory. This is the minimum
requirement from D of E in order that they will approve our pupils to take part
in the Assessed Expedition. Confirmed dates of this training will be given to
pupils that choose to participate in the scheme once they have enrolled in
September. Please note that there is an enrollment fee of 15 from the Duke
of Edinburgh office and this will be added to your school fees. Other fees for
the out of hours training are shown in the brief outline below.

A full day walking/navigating followed by an overnight camp at WicksteadPark where parents will be expected to collect their children at approx
09.30am.
Sunday 6th March
Bradgate Country Park Full Day Walking/Navigation
In order for your child to participate in the practice and assessed expeditions
at least one section from:
Physical Skill Volunteering
needs to be completed before the practice expedition. If we have not seenthis evidence when we apply to D of E Head Office for expedition approval
your child cannot be included in that application.
Practice Friday 25th March Sunday 27th March (leave school 8.30am Friday
return approx 6pm on Sunday) (50 fee will go on your end of term bill)
Three day plus two nights practice expedition in Shropshire.
Assessed Monday 4th
July to Wednesday 6th
July (leave school 8.30amMonday return approx 6pm on Wednesday) (50 fee will go on your end of
term bill)
Three day plus 2 nights Assessed Expedition in Derbyshire.
Written account or a presentation about the aim of their expedition to be
completed after the expedition in order for this section to be fully signed off.
The DofE Team at Wellingborough School will help participants to complete
the expedition section and give them advice about the other sections
however it is up to your child to organise each section, and though we docheck how they are doing with the other sections over the year, the purpose
of the Duke of Edinburgh Award is that it encourages children to organise
and motivate themselves whilst participating in new activities. In order to
help your child to choose activities for each section we recommend that you
look at the Duke of Edinburgh website (address at the bottom of this letter),
filled with very useful information.
