One of the things I’ve enjoyed particularlyover recent times on holiday is fishing, normally using lures offharbour walls, or rocks.Truth be toldI’m not verygood at it,although

one holiday I caught loads of Pollack, but theywere still small and I threw them back. I dreamof catching cod, or herring, or mackerel, orflounders, or dabs, but bad fishermen tend tostay as dreamers. My father came from NorthDevon, and he told of going fishing, with talesof people having legs broken by conger eelshiding in rocks near the coast. Apparentlyconger eels grow to 6 foot, and have a viciousbite – don’t fancy catching one of those! Moreoften in North Devon the standard fish to catchwas the garfish – a long thin green inediblemonstrosity with lots of teeth and a long thinnose!

Sometimes I wonder if Jesus smiled, orothers caught the sense of humour, when hesaid to the disciples “I will make you fishers ofmen!” They were fishermen. They knew what

fish looked like. If it was on thebasis of beauty alone, I suspectmale and female fish would never

get together!!!! Fish just look odd.A lot look ugly. Some are distinctly

weird. And they all look verydifferent. Here is Jesus saying – you knowwhat it’s like catching all those weird fish– it’s exactly the same with catchingpeople. There’s a lot of different looking

people!

From the Rector

Dear Friends,

Continued overleaf

I decided to write this letter at the sametime as I was thinking of booking aholiday for a few weeks time. We havealways loved to holiday in Scotland –often in the Western Isles, or the west ofScotland, and it has been good comingto work up here from Manchester be-cause it has taken off the first 180 milesand 4 hours of the driving to get to someof the great places in Scotland! When Iwas 8 we had a holiday in Nairn, buthave never been more towards theNorth East part of Scotland – along byBanff, Buchan or Peterhead, so thinkthat is where we might go this time.

The next issue of Cyprian Life should beavailable in Church on Sunday 1st De-cember 2013. The deadline for materialis 17th November and the magazine willcover December 2013 and January2014.

Cover PhotoSt Cyprian’s has been celebratingits 140th anniversary this year. Thecelebrations culminated in a specialservice on the Sunday, 15th Septem-ber, the Sunday nearest ourpatronal festival, where the Bishoppresided and preached.

Afterwards there was a party in the hallat which the birthday cake was cut. Thephoto shows Nancy doing the honourswhile Les and other members of thecongregation applaud. There are morepictures and a letter of congratulation fromanother St Cyprian’s on the centre pages.

When I was ordained, you got to invitefriends to the service. The vicar who I was towork with reckoned that the group of friendswho came – from theological college, from mypast life, from placement churches – were thestrangest group of people he had ever seengathered in one place! But then, doesn’t thatrepresent God’s people as we are?

And then I look around our church. I wastempted to write something like “Strange isn’tthe word!!!!!!” However I decided not to incase anyone got offended! But I do praise Godthat he calls such an amazing range of people.People who look different to each other. Eachof whom has a story, a personal history, whichis fascinating, varied, interesting. Each ofwhom brings different interests, differentexperience, different gifts. Each of whom is adifferent piece in the puzzle that is the peopleof God at St. Cyprian’s. Each of whom has a

unique place in that puzzle. Each of whom issorely missed when not there. Put that puzzletogether and we have the picture of Christ, because “we are the body of Christ.”

Having said that, when talking about theChristian faith, all metaphors have theirlimitations, and my jigsaw puzzle metaphordoes. It has limitations because it suggests weare the complete picture. We are not! There arealways more people to welcome into ourfellowship, our worshipping community. There are always more people to invite. If youare reading this magazine, but not sure aboutworshipping with us, you too would bewelcome, and we would love to see you – justcome and sit at the back and see what wedo.......

It is important to remember however, thatanyone who joins will be different. Unique. With their own experience and insights. And

we will be changed every time a new piece isadded to our fellowship. But perhaps I want tochange the word – we will be improved, wewill grow, we will become more and more thebody of Christ God wants us to be, as more andmore people join us.

Look around at church. Give thanks foreach special unique individual. And pray thatmore and more people just like them will comeand join us and be part of our family!!!

Yours in Christ,

Les

There is no doubt that Saaksmaki Bridgewas not built for beauty! All the bolts used stillshow. The suspension wires and rods were justthat! There was no sense the metal girders hadtheir corners rounded off for aesthetic reasons. It wasn’t built for beauty, it was built forstrength, to stand firm through the harsh andsnowy winters they have there. However, itwas beautiful. The industrial with the natural,in that spot, was absolutely wonderful.

Each of us see different types of buildingas beautiful. For some it is old houses, orcastles. For others it is modern buildings (halfthe charm of the Burrell collection, forexample, is the building in which it is housed). For others it is churches. But for me, Iparticularly like industrial architecture, represented by that bridge in Finland.

Every so often, I give Lucy a lift over toShettleston. We drive through Stepps, thenalong Avenue End Rd, before heading downinto Shettleston. Just off Avenue End road aretwo “industrial” buildings I love. They werebuilt for very functional reasons, with noattempt to look good. They are water towers. To me they are fantastic. One of them is evenlit up underneath at night with changing colourlights – so perhaps I’m not the only one wholikes them! They may have been built to be

functional, but in their patterns and designsomething quite beautiful has been created, quite by accident!

Lenzie and Kirkintilloch have much thathas the same effect. The canal has produced itsshare of beautiful industrial architecture.Deliberately made “industrially beautiful” isthe Falkirk Wheel, which is something special.Personally I particularly enjoyed the tunnelbehind the wheel, which was made to befunctional. Closer to home there are lots oflittle gems. The little bridge under the canal atHarestanes is bonny. The canal bridge just upfrom the East End is attractive. The triplebridge in Luggiebank Park is impressive. Evennicer is some of the architecture generated bythe railway. The footbridge over the station. The road bridge under the station. I often wishI had seen the Spider Bridge across Woodilee– the photos of it suggest it was wonderful.

Perhaps the one difference about industrialgems is you have to look for them, and have amind switched into the idea that there is beautyin all sorts of places where you may not expectit.

Themes like finding beauty in uglinessalways remind me of something else! For me itis the cross.

The cross was ugly. What happened therewas brutal and horrible. How a man was sobrutalised is beyond imagining. And yet in thevery middle of the cross there is an infinitebeauty, if only we can see it, if we can look forit. In the midst of the cross was a man who saidabout the people who created the infiniteugliness of the end of the man called Jesus:“Father forgive them, they don’t know whatthey are doing.”

Les

A few years ago I was very lucky to goto a theological conference in Finland,at a place called Saaksmaki, whichclaims to have the oldest Church in Fin-land – it is very beautiful, even if no-oneis really sure how old it actually is.However, I remember much more, justoutside the village, the suspensionbridge – called Saaksmaki Bridge.

Through new eyes . . . . . .looking at the localethrough the eyes of a recent incomer!

140th Anniversary CelebrationsThe celebrations were brought toa climax during the weekendnearest our Patronal Festivalwhen, on the Sunday, the Bishopcame to celebrate and preach. This was followed by a party inthe Hall and the cutting of the an-niversary cake by Nancy Hogg.

Les had written to many formermembers and it was lovely to havequite a number of them join us for theservice and the party.

Les had also written to as manychurches dedicated to St Cyprian as he couldfind and has received a number of replieswishing us well and congratulating us onreaching our 140th anniversary. One ofparticular note is reproduced opposite. If youwould like to see some pictures of StCyprian’s, North Adelaide, there is a websitethat describes its organ and shows pictures ofthe church. The address is www.ohta.org.au/organs/organs/NorthAdelaideStCyprians.html.

On the Saturday, the church had been openas part of the East Dunbartonshire Doors OpenDay and at the same time we had our mostsuccessful Car Boot Sale ever, with around£600 added to church funds.

The anniversary party was the last event to

be held in the Hall before work started onrebuilding the east wall. You can see in thepicture on the left below the bulge in the wallthat made the work necessary and why wehave had internal supports to take the weightof the roof off this wall. At the time of writing, the wall has been demolished and a new andmore substantial timber-frame structure built. The new wall will be finished with an all-brickexternal leaf on a new foundation. We expectto be back in the Hall in good time for theChristmas Fayre.

The work will put a big dent in ourfinances, so if you are able, we would muchappreciate any additional financial support youcan offer in the future.

My dear brother in Christ,I send you greetings on behalf of Saint

Cyprian’s, North Adelaide, South Australia, asyou celebrate your patronal festival.

It was a delight to hear from you as youlook forward to your 140th anniversary. Thisyear we are 130 years old.

We celebrated our patronal festival oneweek early because of a particularcircumstance which meant that 15 Septemberwould not work for us. You were rememberedat our celebration today.

We are not a large parish (40 to 45) on anaverage Sunday. For most of our history wehave only had a part-time priest and there hasnever been a parish residence – the priest hasalways lived in his own home or unit. We area parish in the catholic tradition. On festivals(Christmas, Epiphany, Easter, Pentecost, SaintCyprian’s Day and Christ the King) we enjoya Sung Eucharist with incense; on otherSundays we have a sung Eucharist but noincense.

Our Church is quite small – we can

accommodate 100 in our pews. We have aspacious Sanctuary. We will be sending you acopy of our first 125 years and I expect to putthat in the post in two weeks time.

I have been the part-time priest-in-chargeof Saint Cyprian’s for the past 3 years. Onreaching the age of 70, I retired from being theBishop of Bunbury (Western Australia) andreturned to Adelaide. After a 6 month breakthe Archbishop asked me to look after SaintCyprian’s. It is a real joy and truly delightfulto hear from another Church with the samepatron.

May our Lord pour many blessings uponyou as you celebrate 140 years! SaintCyprian’s, North Adelaide, greets you in thename of our risen Lord in communion withSaint Cyprian and the whole company ofChrist’s people in this life and in the life tocome.

Peace be with you all,+ David McCall
