Cycle 2, Week 4 – Northwest Native American Salmon, Ages 4-6 Learning target: Designing abstract art, understanding Native American art. Element of art: color (specifically, primary colors) Materials: Surface for tutor to draw on, 8.5 x 11 paper, pencils, markers 1. Show examples of Northwest Native American silkscreen prints. 2. Discuss the art. Questions like… “What kinds of shapes do you see?” “Do the animals look like real animals? In what way do the look real? In what way do they not look real?” (talk about what abstract means) “What kinds of colors did the artist use?” “Does this look harder or easier than drawing a realistic animal?” (5 minutes) 3. Give students the outline of the fish. Walk them through drawing the fins and thickening the formlines. 4. Show traditional shapes used in Northwest native art. 5. Guide them through adding abstract design. For example: -add 2 straight lines in the tail -draw a circle in the head -draw a large ovoid in the body -draw 2 crescents -add 3 circles -add 3 curved lines -etc…. until students have a good design without it being overfilled (Drawing portion: 15 minutes) 6. Define primary color. Talk about the simple color used in Northwest Native American art. Have students color in their designs using black plus one or two primary colors. (10 minutes) History: The Northwest coast region extends from Southern border of Alaska to Northwestern California. Traditionally, designs were carved in wood on things such as masks, musical instruments, and totem poles. The paintings on these items were based on a three-color scheme: black lines (made from charcoal or lignite), red lines (ochres), and blue-green (copper). Pigments were mixed with a medium from dried salmon eggs. Paint brushes were made from porcupine hairs. The designs have a common use of shape- ovoids, U-shapes, crescents, and circles.
