evidence of his well-deserved recognition as an Honorary Member.

To review some of the areas being worked on, I will start with the Cottage 4 drain/sewer problems. The toilet is now working better. To fix the sink drain, the sink vanity needs to be raised, since the sink drain is actually lower than the outlet for the drain. The sewer line on the women's side of the bath house has been an ongoing problem, so Ray has removed the roots from the line to avoid more backups. We purchased a new vacuum cleaner for the club, to replace the one upstairs in the clubhouse. The A/C wiring in the Commodore's room was replaced and now meets code. The electric outlets on the deck over the Bean Room were also replaced.

The lack of hot water in Cottage 5 was fixed by running a new pipe to the hot water heater. Ray has added a platform to the pilings for the No Wake sign near A-Dock, so that the osprey, which was on the clubhouse roof now has a new home on the new platform. A new “No Wake” sign is being prepared.

New doors for the Bean room are on order and awnings selected for the outside doors. Both should be installed by our Opening Day ceremonies on 24 May.

CYC Events

The April Casino Night event was a wonderful night filled with friendship, food and fun. A huge thank you goes to Terri Edwards and her sister Vickie Judge for all their work shopping for, preparing and serving the delicious food. Terri and Vickie helped arrange the Bean room with decorations, and overall event coordination. Dolores Derrington, Liz Reisman, Ann Foster, Commodore Hajos, and Mary & Brian Winsor also helped with the preparation, serving and clean up.

There are a number of Corinthians who deserve recognition for helping with this event. Jim Estep, as our new CYC Bar Manager, did a great job of stocking the bar, preparing the coolers and generally putting the bar in position for operations, and Jim helped with clean-up. Bartenders who helped with our two shifts included Commodore Hajos, Liz Reisman, Don Foster, Bob Ricketts, and P/C Ron Ryland.

P/C Darrell and P/C Dolores Derrington helped with the planning and execution of this years’ Casino Night event. They hosted CYC Casino Nights in past years and were a great help with their coaching and experience for this years’ event. Darrell ran the Craps Table, Dolores dealt Black Jack and Gage Mallory helped with the Roulette Wheel.

Our Auction was led by Carolyn Tapp Rhoads who could sell ice to an Eskimo. The bidding wars were furious and kept our Banker Jim Estep busy.

Dollars and Cents

To our fellow Corinthians -

I am happy to report that our Yacht Club appears to be doing well financially. Our bank accounts as of April 25, 2014 are as follows:

Operating Account $N

Heritage Account $N

Entertainment Account $N

Budget for 2014

Over the past several months I have been reviewing past expenses and revenues, making projections on how these may play out for 2014. After giving it much thought I have come up with a budget for 2014. This has also been reviewed by the board and will be used as a guideline for this year’s finances. About midyear I will look at the actual numbers to see how they compare with the budget. Below is

3

the budget for 2014. (see spreadsheet at end of newsletter)

Although I am using the term income, what I am really referring to is cash flow for the year. This is not an income statement as it does not include such items as depreciation. It should also be noted that it is assumed that the Entertainment Account will fund itself and break even. This is the same with the Boutique. So what we are really looking at on this budget is the money coming into the Operating Account in the form of dues, slip fees, cottage rentals, etc; and the money going out to pay for things like maintenance, utilities, real estate taxes etc. I have also set aside money for an annual transfer of $NN to the Heritage Account for future capital improvements and $NN for contingencies to cover unforeseen expenses. After these allowances, the budget shows that we still should have a positive cash flow (net income on the budget) of $NN. With this result, I feel that the financial position of our Yacht Club is quite strong. But of course, we will always need to recruit new members and must always watch our expenses to keep things on track.

2nd Quarter Invoices

The 2nd quarter invoices have been mailed at the beginning of April with the majority of the payments already received. Those who have not yet paid, please make every effort to get your payment in as soon as possible. We would like to have all of the money in within 30 days of the invoice. This saves extra work for myself and our accountants tracking these invoices. Your diligence on this is greatly appreciated.

That’s all for this month. Now let’s get out on the water!

Your CYC Treasurer,

John Wittman

Membership/Secretary

As mentioned in Paula’s report, please join me in welcoming Don and Cindy Dahl as our newest members of Corinthian Yacht Club. Don and Cindy joined in the fun at our Casino Night, and stayed in Cottage 5. They are re-locating their boat from Solomon’s to CYC in the near future. We look forward to seeing you on the docks.

Unfortunately, we learned of the passing of longtime member and Trust Fund Chairman,

Bill Maslin. He passed away on April 7th. Our condolences to his son Tom and family. (see letter below from his son Tom)

Dear Paula and Sally:

My father, William R. Maslin, Jr. (Bill), passed away on April 8th at the age of 93. Dad was a long time member of the Corinthian Yacht Club. He had a lifelong love of boats, acquiring his first sailboat (an 8 foot wooden boat that he named the “Queen Mary”, when he was a boy, and sailed it on Long Island Sound. He owned a series of sailboats when my brothers and I were growing up, and sailed them on the Chesapeake.

As Dad entered his sixties, he migrated to power boats, first a trawler, then a 40 foot Tradewinds, and lastly a 40 foot Holiday Mansion, all of which were kept in his covered slip at the end of A Pier at CYC. Dad thoroughly enjoyed his association with CYC, serving for a time as treasurer. While my mother did not share Dad’s passion for the sea, she dutifully accompanied Dad on their boating adventures. My parents moved to Columbus, Mississippi in 2011. My mother passed away in 2011. While many of the newer members of CYC did not know Dad, I thought that a note in the newsletter about Dad’s passing would inform those who knew him. Thank you – Tom Maslin.

On another sad note, we received a letter of resignation from Bob and Joan Tolle. Bob served as Treasurer of CYC and he and Joan will be missed. There is still a vacancy on the Board for Fleet Captain and we are looking for volunteers to help us orchestrate a fun boating season, starting with the Shakedown Cruise. Please consider stepping up to this important and fun role by letting me or Paula know of your interest.

The significant difference in water temperature is keeping the Trophy stripers on their spawning beds as of late April. Once that temperature hits 55 degrees at the 15-20 foot level, NOT the surface, the fish SHOULD start making the run down the Potomac and from the creeks to the ocean. I am anticipating an outstanding May and it would not be the first time we would have the big fish until late May and early June.

Croakers, speckled trout hopefully made it through the harsh winter but the fish kills to the south will definitely have an effect on their appearance. Unless we get some really warm May days and nights increasing the water temperature to at least the upper 60’s by mid May the bluefish will most likely be delayed.

2011 was our last good striper spawn and those fish should be of the minimum 18 inches for the summer season.

For May, this is a timely review of the by-laws, as we start recruiting Board Members now for the next year (2015). There is a process, and it is outlined below, in Sections 1, 2, and 3. Bottom line, we generate a “slate” of officers, although multiple nominations for a single office are allowed, until the November meeting. Now is your chance to get involved and serve this wonderful Club. We still have an opening this year for Fleet Captain, if you want to enjoy some cruising. (Underlined words are for emphasis only in this newsletter)

Article III, Election of Officers and Board of Trustees Section 1. At least seven weeks prior to the Annual Meeting, the Nominating Committee shall send to the Secretary names of all officers and other members of the Board of Trustees for the ensuing year and the Secretary shall publish this list in the regular notice for the November meeting of the Club.

Section 2. Other nominations for officers and other members of the Board of Trustees shall be made at the regular November meeting, and the names of all nominees shall be posted by the Secretary on the bulletin board immediately thereafter and also in the notices sent to the members of the Annual Meeting in December. A member may accept nomination for but one office. No subsequent nominations shall be made between the November nominating meeting and the December election meeting except for offices for which there are no candidates.

Section 3. The election shall be held at the annual meeting in December. Voting for officers and other members of the Board of Trustees shall be at all times by ballot, and a majority of votes cast by members actually present and voting shall be necessary for election of officers. The three Trustees receiving the highest number of votes cast shall be elected to office. The Secretary shall compile a list of names of all active members present at the Annual Meeting in December. As the Secretary calls each name, the member shall step forward and cast his ballot, and the Secretary shall check the name of each member as he casts his ballot. Ballots to be valid for the Board of Trustees must be for the full number to be elected to that office.

Section 4. Trustees shall hold office until their successors shall be elected. If the office of one or more of the officers or members of the Board of Trustees shall become vacant by reason of death, resignation, retirement, removal from

5

office, or otherwise, a majority of remaining Trustees, though less than a quorum, shall choose a successor or successors, who shall hold office until the next election.

Don Foster is a big fisherman, hunter and general outdoorsman when he is not helping to run his business in Fairfax in commercial real estate. Don and Ann have been married for over 50 years, and .you can find them on A-Dock in their Grady White. Formerly owners of a Riviera, a Tiara, and several other boats, they enjoy fishing and cruising.

Don recently took a trip to Panama with his son, Matt, who hooked a Black Marlin for the first time. Enticer helped hook some excellent fish off Virginia Beach a few years ago, despite rough “INCOMING” seas and waves into the fly bridge. Don also has a bass boat to fish in the upper Potomac and lakes in the area. Don has landed sailfish, marlin, tuna, dolphin, just about all types of fish. He and Ann have traveled to exotic fishing spots, such as Costa Rica.

Don served as Treasurer for two years recently, and Fleet Captain in the past. Thank you for your service Don, and to Ann for her support to CYC and Don through these years. Trivia for the day: Ann Foster’s mother worked for Darrell Derrington’s father at the Veteran’s Administration in Washington, DC, and attended Darrell and Dolores’s wedding in 1978. We did not meet Ann until we were CYC members. Later, we stumbled into the connection!
