Employment

Employers Delivery Team (EDT) July 2013 - Present

New Forth Bridge, Queensferry, Scotland

My role is that of a field steelworks surveillance inspector monitoring all fabrication, welding, bolting and, to a lesser degree, shot-blasting and painting and reporting back to the EDT. The EDT consists of senior engineers from ARUP and Jacobs who have been engaged by Transport Scotland to monitor the building of the bridge. The bridge builders are FCBC, a consortium of Scottish, Spanish, German and American contractors. My role requires me to have in-depth knowledge of the following codes and duties are listed below:

EN1090, EN1011, EN15614, EN14555, EN9606, ISO5817, EN9692

Monitoring contractor health and safety. Checking that all works carried out comply with the contractors welding works

quality plan. Verifying and recording all pre-weld fit up including weld gap and flatness across

joint. Ensuring that the contractor has the correct WPS in place for that joint and that

the welder understands it, particularly as the welding contractor is from Croatia. Checking weld parameters / consumables are compliance with the WPS.

Observing the Independent Inspection Authority (IIA) to ensure that he is monitoring all welding operations.

Ensuring that the NDT contractor performs the correct amount of weld testing and also in the correct location.

Periodic calculation of welder’s heat input. Spot checks on consumable storage and distribution to the welders. Checking for any code non compliances and reporting back to engineer. Keeping a daily log to compare with the contractor’s handover certificate.

Non Welding Related Duties

Monitoring all bolting operations; there are over 250,000 bolts on the project some are tightened using the part turn method and some are tightened using a DTI washer; there are also tension control bolts.

Checking on the bolting teams to ensure that they are installing the correct grade of bolt for that particular location.

Shot blasting and painting falls under my remit but to a much lesser degree as it is more of a back up to our full time painting inspector.

Related Duties

Verifying contractors’ welding procedure qualifications. Cross checking the contractor’s hand over certificate against my records,

ensuring that all the weld repair reports are captured accurately and all technical queries and non-conformance reports have been closed out to the client’s satisfaction.

Basically we are the eyes and ears for the client and as such have a duty to report anything which we think is not right; this is not restricted solely to welding and fabricating.

Fulcrum Technical Resources (Agency) April 2013 – July 2013

Welding Inspector

Employed on a cross country stainless steel pipeline on the Isle of Grain, Kent. The main contractor was Chicago Bridge & Iron and I was engaged by the pipe lining sub-contractor, Land and Marine / Murphy. The contract was to lay three TIG welded pipelines of 300mm, 350mm and 900mm diameter to transfer the liquefied natural gas from the terminal to the storage tanks. My role was to monitor all handling and welding operations within the confines of ASME.

Monitoring the connection of the pipe by the pipe fitters, checking for any damage.

Checking the weld bevel, alignment and angle root gap for compliance with the WPS.

Checking all consumables in accordance with the WPS. Checking purge purity before allowing welding to commence. Visually inspecting root for compliance with the code (ASME B31.3) before

closure. Monitoring all in process welding, conducting heat input calculations. Visually checking completed welds, conducting any surface repairs if required. Handing over to the NDT sub-contractor. Monitoring any post NDT weld repairs. Handing over documentation to the QA team.

Rowecord Engineering Ltd., South Wales July 2002 – April 2013Welding Inspector

Roewcord was a major contractor in the heavy engineering sector with projects ranging from box and plate girder bridges, blast furnaces and sports stadiums. They specialised in taking on complex projects and meeting deadlines within budget, most notably, the building of the Legacy Roof on the Aquatic Centre for the 2012 London Olympics.

Member of a small team of welding inspectors and NDT technicians. Monitoring welding operations at the factory and occasionally sub-contractors’

premises, ensuring that the inspection and test plans were adhered to, accepting or rejecting welds using the appropriate codes.

We manufactured to the following codes: NSSS, ISO5817, BS5400, PD5500, EIS3 and various client specifications.

Required to liaise with client’s inspectors. When the components were visually inspected and the required NDT completed,

it was my responsibility to sign them off to be painted of for final inspection by a third party.

Finally these had to be recorded on the company’s quality database for future client data packages.

Unfortunately the company went into receivership in April 2013.
