PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Administrative Experience:

8/06 to 8/12 Department Chair, Human Factors and Systems,

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Duties included performance evaluation of faculty; management of the department budget; workload assignment; management of all department resources.

8/07 to 8/09 Assistant Vice President of Research Oversaw all residential research programs for the Daytona Beach, FL and Prescott, AZ campuses. Also in charge of the pre-award office in identifying and pursuing funding opportunities for faculty and assisting in the preparation of proposals and budgeting. I served as chair of the university’s Institutional Review Board for both residential campuses and Worldwide.

Research Experience:

8/05 to Present: Principle investigator Research using RIPCHORD (Realizing Improved Patient Care through Human-Centered Operating Room Design) and HFACS (Human Factors Analysis and Classification System) to classify flow disruptions and potential error in the operating room. This project involves data collection at multiple sites during trauma and cardio-thoracic surgery.

8/05 to Present: Principle investigator Research involved in the identification and classification of human error in complex systems. Continued work begun at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) which classified all human error related civil aviation accidents in the United States from 1990-2004. This includes accident and error analysis in addition to fatigue and scheduling assessment.

6/02 to 8/05: Principle investigator, working with Dr. Scott Shappell, in the analysis of human error among different platforms of aviation using HFACS. Responsible for investigating human error in commercial aviation, general aviation, air tours, maintenance, emergency medical transport, and offshore aviation operations. Primary efforts were focused on the validation of the HFACS human error taxonomy involving over 40,000 human error related aviation accidents spanning 1990 through 2005.

5/01 to 8/05: Principle investigator in the Shiftwork, Fatigue, and Stress program at the FAA. Our research focused on the effects of shiftwork, fatigue, and stress on performance and health as it applies to the Air Traffic Control (ATC) environment and complex systems. Investigations examined the effects of

different countermeasures for combating fatigue and maintaining performance on the night shift.

8/96 to 5/01: Established the Human Response Dynamics Laboratory at The University of Central Oklahoma, Edmond, OK. The lab provides training and research experience in cardiovascular behavioral medicine and psychoneuroendocrinology. Specifically, our research involved the effects of emotional and physical stress on the cardiovascular and neuroendocrine systems.

12/93 to 8/96: National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism Postdoctoral Fellow, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, University of Oklahoma, Health Sciences Center, Oklahoma City, OK. Involved in research examining the cardiovascular effects of alcohol abuse in men and women.

12/93 to 8/96: University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center and Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Oklahoma City, OK. Study Coordinator: “Cardiovascular Dysregulation in Abstinent Alcoholics.” This study involved the evaluation of cardiovascular functioning in alcoholic males using both impedance cardiography and echocardiography.

12/93 to 8/96: Research Assistant, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, University of Oklahoma, Health Sciences Center, Oklahoma City, OK. Involved in research concerning the effects of exercise and psychological stress on the cardiovascular and neuroendocrine systems.

8/88 to 8/91: Research Assistant to Dr. Michael T. Allen, Department of Psychology/Human Psychophysiology Laboratory, University of Southern Mississippi. Research included comprehensive measurement of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems during physical and emotional stress.
