In a masswe nationally co-ordina- ted campaign, NUSAS aims to unite students on all tie English carouses in a clear rejection of the "Sew Deal'. During the Build-up to the refere p ^utf on NoveTOer 2, students will be asked to Sign a petition rejecting the new constitution on tne grounds that; - it excludes the majority Of South Africans; - it entrenches apartne*a; - all Soutn Africans nust participate fn deciding Our cormon f u t u r e . In t h i s way, NUSA5 hopes to show that the vast majority of English-speaking students Stand m clear opposition to the Constitution 3111 * and all that it implies - for the correct reasons. Saying "no" to the Constitution is, in this context, not a nega- tive action. It is not align ing ourselves with the HSP and the CP, who want to keep things as tney are. It is no saying that we want the govemnent to "go Back to th drawing-board* - the drawing board of *nite politics. Rather, it is a positive step : & clear and unequivo- I- cal statement of our reject- ion of apartheid; and a state- c«nt of our commitment, as de*flOcratic students, to work- ing towards a free South Africa in which the people shall govern. It is a statement which says: How can the constitution be "A step m the right direction* when i t is premised on the Ban'jstan policy? Is it gcmc to prevent shootings and detention in the Ciskei? !s It going to stop shacks m Crossroads from being de- molished? Is it going to end ^as$ removals and starvation in resettlement camps? Is it going to mean an end to the war in Namibia where we Are expected to fight? So, in the forthcoming refer- endum, it is not enough to vote 'no". After all, what right does a "whites only* referendum have to decide on the future of our country? While seeing that it is important to demonstrate that the government does not have the support of even i t s own power-base - the white electorate - we must see further than this. If we are committed to real democracy, and not a racially-exclusive parliam- entary politics, we must actively lend our support to the United Democratic Front. NUSAS, as a member of the UOfr is offering an alter- native that goes beyond *'going back to the drawing- board". Is is realistically acknowledging that i f the bill is implemented, the already-limited role of par- liamentary opposition will Be completely destroyed. It *s calling on students to get actively involved in or- gan isTTToriswTiTcTrTepresent the views and needs of the majority of South Africans. UDF Plans Nationwide Campaign

A PROGRAMME OF ACTION Every person in South A f r i ca

[opposed to the new c o n s t i t u ­t i on and Koornhof B i l l s , should beccwe involved in the United Democratic Front 's nationwide campaign," said Hr Andrew Boraine. He was [speaking a t a Student Committee Against the Hew Const i tu t ion (SCANC) seminar l as t Wednesday.

Boraine, a past-NUSAS Pres i ­dent and UCT SRC v i c e -pres ident , ou t l ined four major aims of the UOF.

H i s t o r i c a l l y , democratic leaders have been detained o r banned. For t h i s reason, the UDF w i l l systemat ica l ly t r a i n new leadership.

SCANC: What do you fee l about the current newspaper camp­aign and the fac t that the Afr ikaans press won' t publ ish PFP advertisements? ANDREW: We're ohviously very b i t t e r , as the t n g l i s h press is p laying i t ' s t r a d i t i o n a l l i b e r a l ro le by publ ish ing a l l s ides, whereas the A f r i k ­aans press only publishes "Yes" adver ts . This proves ^o us tha t the Afr ikaans pres s con t ro l l ed by the National

-s t Par ty , and places severe l i m i t a t i o n s on our a b i l i t y t o get through to people who need to hear us .

SCANC: What do you th ink the r e s u l t o f the referendum w i l l be? ANDREW: W e l l . . . t h e Nats are p lay ing on the PFP/CP a l l i ­ance, but w i th the d iss ident NRP/Nat vo te , I th ink we could o p t i m i s t i c a l l y qet a "No" m a j o r i t y .

SCANC: What do you see as the PFP's and parl iamentary oppos i t ion 's ro le in the new cons t i t u t i on? ANDREW: We c a n ' t decide that t i l l a f t e r the referendum, but i t w i l l be discussed at the Federal Congress in November.

WHOSE FUTURE? •We're here to s tay . Don't throw our fu tu re away- i s o l i n e f a m i l i a r to most o f us by now. The government's campaign fo r a "Yes" vote i n the November 2 referendum has been advert ised exten­s i ve l y in a l l major news­papers.
