Work as an able seafarer on the deep sea oceanic research vessels, R/V Kilo Moana, a 186’ Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull (SWATH)and the R/V Kaimikai-O-Kanaloa a 223’ single hull.

Watch standing on bridge as lookout for other vessels or obstacles that will impede the ships safety or navigational course. Ships helmsmen, relying on visual references, compass, and rudder angle indicator to steer a steady course as directed by

the mate or other officers on the bridge. Stand security-related watches on gangway or anchor watch. General maintenance, repair, sanitation and up keep of material, equipment and areas in the deck department. Operation of emergency lifesaving, damage control and safety equipment. Operations of deck machinery windlass, cranes and winches for loading and unloading cargo. Launching and recovery of various research arrays such as conductivity, temperature and depth sensors (CTD), weather

buoys, remotely operated vehicles (ROV), autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV) etc. Assisting with rigging and launch recovery plans. Small boat operations.

Simin Boroumand – Cont. Un-Cruise Adventures (Juneau Alaska) U.S. Coast Guard Licensed Deckhand (Apr ’14 -Sept'14)

Licensed deckhand aboard a 156 ft., 74 passengers, live aboard, diesel powered vessel. Which provides adventure cruises throughoutCoastal Washington exploring the Olympic wilderness, the San Juan Islands and South East Alaska’s, Alexander Archipelago.

Operator of four twenty foot inflatable tenders. Primary team for skiff operations including pickups and drop offs (primarily beach landings) at various remote locations and

skiff tours. Ship crane operations. Primary caretaker of the vessels overall appearance and function. Ensuring smooth and safe operation of vessel and small boats. Proficient knowledge of all shipboard safety equipment, location and use. Gangway and security watch of vessel. Ensuring proper broadcast of visual signals, navigation lights, anchor lights, flags and day shapes etc. Night watch, which includes bridge lookout, navigation, chart work, radar observation, pilotage, and boat operation. Nightly engineering rounds.

Juneau Whale Watch (Juneau, Alaska) U.S. Coast Guard Operator (May ’13 - Oct ‘13)

Captained a 48ft Aluminum Armstrong Catamaran with four 300 HP outboard engines, a 38ft Aluminum Armstrong Catamaran with two 350 HP outboard engines, two 36ft Bentz aluminum twin diesel inboard jet drives boats. Provided two hour whale watch tours though out; Auke Bay, Favorite Channel, Saginaw Channel, Lynn Canal, Stephens Passage and Chatham Strait. Tours ran from one to four a day seven days a week. Key responsibilities include the operation and maintenance of four boats.

Managing 48, 38, 28 passenger boats, with one to two crew. Continuous monitoring of weather, tides, currents and topography, using navigational equipment.

Dolphin Discoveries (Big Island, Hawaii) U.S. Coast Guard Operator (Jun ’08 - Aug ‘12)

Captained a 19ft and 28ft rigid bottom inflatable with two outboard engines, and a 30ft inboard jet drive. Provided snorkel trips, whale watch and dolphin swims up and down the Kona coast of the Big Island of Hawaii emphasizing, through oral narration, the historical, ecological, geological, and marine biological information of the Island. As Captain, I have direct responsibility for the company’s customer relationships as well as all aspects of vessel operations, crew management, passenger safety and related processes, including pre-launch weather and equipment checks, rescue preparedness, vessel maintenance, and customer satisfaction. Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Managing up to 18 passengers and 1 crew. Continuous monitoring of weather and ocean conditions. Passenger safety and rescue preparedness. Constant vigilance in the location of marine life and education.

Catalina Ocean Rafting (Catalina Island, CA) U.S. Coast Guard Operator (Apr ‘07 – Apr ’08)

Captained a 19ft and 24ft rigid bottom inflatable vessels. Provided ocean guided tours and snorkel trips around Catalina Island emphasizing the historical, geological, ecological and marine biological insights of the island.

Managing up to 12 passengers and 1 crew. Daily route and anchorage planning to maximize positive customer experience. Passenger enjoyment, entertainment, comfort and safety.

Simin Boroumand – Cont. Island Water Charters (Catalina Island, CA) U.S. Coast Guard Operator (Jun ‘06 – Mar ‘07)

Captained a 21ft skip jack. Providing charters specializing in fishing, snorkeling and related ocean experiences, with primary responsibility for locating and reaching prime waters in line with the purpose of the charter as well as the following:

Maintaining the 21ft skip jack. Operating all navigational and related equipment to maximize passenger safety and satisfaction. Providing an enjoyable customer experience including narration of island facts and hands-on guidance in the use of

snorkeling and fishing equipment.

As Open Water Dive Instructor I provided multi-day PADI scuba instruction, certification and guided ocean dives, often in challenging water conditions, to groups of up to 6 people across a wide range of ages and experience levels from novices to experts.
