Most significant contributions Sullivan, Robert

11 2010-09-15

1) Identification of a family of sperm protein synthesized by the epididymis: these proteins have been shown to be novel targets to develop immunocontraception in human and animal (pests or pets). This concept has been protected by a patent: “Acrosomal sperm protein and uses thereof”.

2) Description of membranous vesicles with unusual biophysical properties which are released in the

epididymal lumen by apocrine secretion. These vesicles that we have named “epididymosomes” interact with sperm surface and transfer selected proteins to the sperm surface. Some of these proteins have been shown to be GPI anchored. This is a novel mechanisms of membrane protein acquisition that is involved in acquisition by mammalian spermatozoa their fertilizing ability.

3) Description of sperm carbonyl reductase which plays different function depending of the status of

differentiation of the male gamete. This protein has been shown to have “moonlighting” properties, including affinity for the egg’s zona pellucida.

4) Description of gene expression modifications of the human epididymis under vasectomy and how

they can affect sperm biochemistry and fertilizing ability following vasovasostomy in men. This can explain the discrepancy between surgical success rate of vasectomy reversal and the recovery of fertility.
