“Laser tool” is a byword for speed and precision.

Laser manu facturing processes open up new avenues for

producing individual or complex parts, and can be used to join

lightweight components as well as make them via additive

manufacturing. Laser-based production technologies improve

part quality and increase production throughput, with the broad

spectrum of processes going beyond additive manufacturing to

include drilling, cutting, joining, coating, texturizing and cleaning.

Different laser sources are used for individual applications in

many industrial sectors. Fiber lasers, disk lasers, rod lasers,

slab lasers and diode lasers all produce a beam that precisely

focuses the processing power of the laser on a specific area.

In addition, the latest high-performance ultrafast lasers can

achieve maximum precision, even during cold material processing

as required in the electronics, semiconductor and optics

industries.

Linking the real and tangible world of laser manufacturing with

the virtual world of IT opens up new perspectives for industry 4.0,

with digital photonic production methods enabling manufactur-

ers to print custom three-dimensional components based on a

The Fraunhofer Institute for Material and Beam Technology IWS

in Dresden deals with surface and laser technology.

The production of functional surfaces and the development of

technologies and systems using “tailored light” from lasers are

exciting fields of research that hold great promise for the future.

At the 2015 LASER World of PHOTONICS trade fair, we will

be presenting a newly developed processing head for laser

wire-buildup welding, which perfectly complements the existing

systems technology for laser powder-buildup welding.

Other highlights include

■■ Laser-generated components made from materials

that are difficult to weld

■■ Technologies for distortion-free laser beam welding

(such as for lightweight sidewalls of railway vehicles)

■■ Technology development for MIG/MAG laser-hybrid welding

(such as for crane booms)

■■ Technologies and systems for producing counterfeit-proof

surfaces using laser interference texturizing

■■ Systems technology for rapid beam deflection

Transparent ceramics for medicine,

automotive and optics applications

These days, ceramic materials can be relied on to successfully

fulfill all manner of functions. They are extremely hard, have high

chemical and thermal resistance, strong electrical insulation

properties and good biocompatibility. Scientists at the Fraunhofer

Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems IKTS are

constantly developing these materials, uncovering property

profiles that were unthinkable a few years ago. Transparent

ceramics place incredibly high demands on the technology used

to make them. However, given the specific optical parameters

they offer in combination with typical ceramic properties,

they provide interesting alternatives and supplements to the

conventional materials used for optical systems applications.
