Customized Learning in the Social Sciences
• Year 3 of Customized Learning at HHS
• Our Process:• Create a framework for Social Science• Create Measurement Topics and Learning Targets• Create curriculum
Curriculum Format
Curriculum Format• Conversations with Dr. Lein• Other schools that customize• Varied exposure to all the social sciences each year• Can certainly have students move through one course (World
History, Geography, etc.) at at a time.
Course Set Up• Each year contains Measurement Topics & Learning Targets
from each of the 6 social sciences.• Each MT is similar to a unit.• Each LT is similar to a chapter• LTs have 3 steps each• Step 1: Foundational• Step 2: Skill Development• Step 3: Final Affirmation
• Each Final Affirmation is directly aligned with a social science standard.
Steps• Step 1: students should be building a foundation (terms, key
people, ideas etc.) with which to complete the LT• Step 2: Students should continue building their foundation of
knowledge and begin applying it• Step 3: Students should demonstrate that they can apply their
knowledge within a paper, project etc.
Step 1: Foundations
Step 2: Skill Develoment
Step 3: Final Affirmation
Resources• Online textbooks• Teacher approved/teacher provided links• Student research• Set expectations early• Give guidelines & stick to them
Final Affirmation Rubric
Grading Scale
Level 4 Projects• Research projects that go above & beyond expectations for
learning and understanding• Incorporate several LTs and may be cross-curricular• Student-led projects• Students that do exceptionally well on Level 4s get GPA bump
