Health CareDelivering next-generation patient care Data, along with the apps and devices used to access, collect, share, and track it, is the lifeblood of health care organizations. During its long history, Roswell Park Cancer Institute has maintained an exemplary leadership role in setting national standards for cancer care, research and education. Since 2003, they’ve undergone major growth, adding new jobs and initiating one of the nation’s first hospital facilities dedicated to Phase 1 cancer research studies.

Roswell Park needed an enterprise-level backup and recovery solution for its 450+ virtual machines (VMs) that run its mission-critical applications. The IT team tried several backup tools but experienced multiple challenges: backups were slow, often failed, and were unrecoverable. As the number of VMs increased, the backup process consumed a tremendous amount of storage. One backup tool continually required additional storage appliances because only 2 TB of backups could be stored per appliance. All of these challenges, in turn, made it difficult to prove HIPAA compliance. Roswell Park needs to keep critical systems online while maintaining compliance with HIPPA and other regulatory requirements.

The Challenge:

Catalent Pharma Solutions’ facility in Swindon, UK, houses a large number of file, application and database servers and was the first site to undergo the virtualization process. After implementing VMware vSphere, the next logical step was to implement a backup solution designed specifically for virtualized servers.

After virtualizing its environment, Catalent tried to back up their virtual machines (VMs) with the same backup tool used for their physical servers, but that process was archaic and time-consuming. So they needed to implement a backup solution specifically for virtualized servers.

The Solution:

The Results:

A fire damaged some servers at one of Catalent’s sites, causing a complete interruption in services to the business. Fortunately, Veeam Backup & Replication had been implemented, so the VM recovery process took mere hours, with a 95% reduction in time over their previous backup tool. With the old backup system it would have taken at least a week to recover the servers and restore files.

Students of the university take courses and tests from all over the world using video broadcast, document storage and IP phone platforms, as well as the application servers, so all of this must operate 24 hours a day. When the university exceeded 100 running applications, nothing guaranteed the availability of its backups.

The Université of Aix-Marseille was recently created from a merger of three universities in France. Since then, they have added applications to enable the 58 locations to work together in a virtualized data center. They were initially backing up using the tool provided by the hypervisor, but that method started to fail. The more VMs they added, and the more the network was saturated, the more the backups were corrupted. They needed to do something to protect the data center.

In addition to providing IT support and services to the UBC community, UBC’s IT department also provides infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) and disaster recovery (DR) to 26 universities across the province. UBC’s IT infrastructure serves more than 250,000 students and 60,000 faculty and staff throughout Western Canada.

In order to deliver this level of IT, UBC developed world-class data centers capable of business operations similar to those of Fortune 500 companies. Thousands of VMs run critical databases and applications containing several petabytes of data that must be available 24.7.365, and IT must deliver the highest level of service possible.

During deployment of a legacy backup tool in the VMware vSphere environment, UBC had some challenges. To automate business operations, Vodafone virtualized the IT infrastructure on VMware vSphere. The vSphere environment has hundreds of VMs spread across multiple data centers in the Netherlands that run Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, SAP, Zend Server and a proprietary back-office portal and service navigator. The IT team at TK Telekom supports daily business functions and oversees approximately 100 Windows and Linux virtual machines (VMs) that run important systems and applications. Therefore, the team’s disaster recovery (DR) strategy, particularly for business-critical primary storage, is the centerpiece of its operation.

After virtualizing 40% of their IT infrastructure on VMware vSphere to improve DR, they found that backups were unreliable and granular recovery was difficult. Plus, they didn’t have a way to replicate VMs to another data center. Without reliable VM protection, TK Telecom was unable to virtualize more of their infrastructure.
