uniqueAi Collaborative was asked to design an M&I

Bank branch on the ground floor of an existing

downtown Tampa high-rise and one of the

bigger design challenges was to find a way to

take advantage of the two-story atrium space.

The Armstrong Serpentina ceiling system

enabled the utilization of much of the existing

lighting and HVAC due to its mesh-like quality.

Serpentina’s unique form adds scale and

dimension to the 23 foot tall space and conveys

a “fresh,” contemporary aesthetic that is also

visible from the exterior.

The bold use of colors and curves in

an otherwise rectilinear space was

dramatized by the use of an undulating

Serpentina ceiling. The CDW-branded

red stripe was repeated multiple times

throughout the space and accentuated

within the ceiling plane by red waves that

ultimately tie the entire space together.

The curved clouds can also be used as way

finding devices in a space that consists

mainly of open office workstations.

“The almost limitless flexibility of the Serpentina

panel system allowed us to subtly work WLC’s

corporate logo into the ceiling of our Studio’s

central gathering space. The classic ‘earth rise’

arcing form has been synonymous with the

name WLC Architects for over 25 years. Now it

lives on in our newly-constructed headquarters.

Product: Serpentina Classic Ceiling System with Diamond Louver Panels

Project: Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg, FLArchitect: Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum, Inc.

We used the Serpentina system as a glamorous

way to filter light and sound, screening the

structural and mechanical systems above

from the public space below. The undulating

perforated panels allow sound to be absorbed

in the acoustically treated roof deck, while

the sparkling aluminum wave profile allows

natural light from the skylights to activate the

two-story marble-floored public space below.

HOK was pleased with how Armstrong’s team

coordinated the project with us, reinforcing

our architecture. They brought their passion

to the ceiling of an important piece of civic

architecture.

radiantWe employed the use of the Serpentina product

at My Panini Restaurant to generate a feeling

of movement emanating from the grill area

of the cook line. Undulating forms radiate out

into the dining area from a radius point at the

Panini Grills, the “core” of the food preparation

area. Surrounded by areas of hard ceiling, the

Serpentina “waves” float free in an area of

ceiling open and exposed to the blacked-out

structure above, further accentuating the feeling

of movement and excitement.
