Teaching Summary Statement

As a college student at the age of twenty I was diagnosed with Stage II mixed embryonal carcinoma and

seminoma. Following surgery and three rounds of chemotherapy I have since been cured, leaving an

indelible impression on me that I must “give back” and make a difference for other cancer patients.

Since August 2013 I have been an Assistant Professor at the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer

Center and I specialize in thoracic malignancies. I credit much of my teaching philosophy and style to my

personal medical oncologist, Professor Pasquale Benedetto of the University of Miami. While receiving

treatment from Dr. Benedetto, known as Dr. “B”, I was truly inspired by his infectious passion as he’d

entertain my curiosities surrounding cancer. This personal experience, coupled with my desire to care for

the other patients sitting alongside me in the waiting rooms led me to change my career path as a

Biomedical Engineer towards becoming a Medical Oncologist. Within months I was accepted into

Miami’s fast-track Medical Scholars program, and Dr. B became my mentor throughout medical school.

I have long believed that one learns best when they enjoy the topic. For this reason I think it is imperative

that I teach with enthusiasm and excitement, and my teaching evaluations to date from medical students,

medicine residents and oncology fellows reflect this. Furthermore, when giving formal presentations,

whether at UNC or a national conference, I try to take a more “outside of the box” approach by

Curriculum Vitae

Revised 4/17/17 16

challenging the status quo mentality. Almost as a personal rule, my presentations rarely have bullet

points, are filled with attention grabbing titles and graphics, and I always aim to throw in a few

provocative concepts peppered throughout the talk. The intended consequence is to stimulate thinking,

excitement and conversation, the ultimate goal being to effectuate change.

As detailed in my research summary statement, my goal is focus on eliminating the cause of death of

most cancer patients, which is our inability to control metastatic biology. Although my research

accomplishments thus far have enabled me to give some notable lectures, my vision going forward is that

my research efforts will lead too much greater discoveries and invitations to share such findings on a

national and international level. Such success would imply that indeed we are well on our way to making

a difference for those suffering from cancer.

Research Summary Statement

Because my passion began as a cancer patient, I am constantly driven to uncover important findings in

cancer biology and translate these to the clinic as rapidly as possible. I have 7 years of formal experience

in basic science studying cancer biology, the first three began in August 2010 as a medical oncology

fellow in Dr. Anil Sood’s laboratory (MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX), and since August

2013 I have been an independent investigator at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. My

research career thus far has quickly led to several high-impact discoveries by combining innovative ideas

and synergistic collaborative teams. My research is characterized by a harmonization of therapeutic

RNA interference, sophisticated modeling of cancer metastasis and the tumor microenvironment, and

the integrative use of bioinformatics platforms and systems biology to uncover key nodes in cancer

networks. Because lung cancer accounts for the greatest proportion of cancer-related deaths in the U.S.

and worldwide, which is almost invariably due to metastatic spread, most of my current work uses lung

cancer as a disease model with the hopes that our discoveries will also fundamentally impact paradigms in

other malignancies.
