IX. PRIOR RESEARCH INTERESTS

1. Ossicular prosthetics. Prosthetic Design and Development: Columellar prostheses; Assembly prostheses; Neomalleus techniques; In depth analysis of prognostic factors in middle ear reconstruction; Significant commercial links with Olympus / Gyrus ENT (formerly Smith & Nephew Richards), Memphis, Tennessee resulting in a range of seventeen commercial middle ear prostheses.

2. Reconstruction of the external canal wall. Use of Porous Hydroxylapatite Ceramic in Two Roles: 1. Reconstruction of attic defects using hydroxylapatite semicircular plates to abolish the problem of recurrent cholesteatoma after intact canal wall mastoidectomy surgery. 2. Mastoidectomy reconstruction. Development of definitive techniques to reconstruct and rehabilitate mastoidectomy cavity or atticotomy defects.

3. Ventilation tube design and development. The design and development of a range of middle ear ventilation tubes which provide substantial advantages over prior models.

4. External canal dressings. The use of porous hydrophilic polyurethane foam as an external canal dressing for tympanoplasty cases.

5. Cochlear implantation. Development of modified techniques which eliminate the use of supplementary foreign bodies during cochlear implantation, reduction of surgical time, trauma and surgical complications. Progressive evolution, 1993-

6. Use of cartilage and perichondrial composite grafts to eliminate tympanic membrane collapse after reconstructive surgery. Combined with both attic repair and mastoidectomy reconstruction.

7. Suction irrigation. Development of a system to improve surgical efficiency during middle ear procedures to be developed commercially.

8. Reclassification of collapsed drum pathology into surgically significant stages.

9. Use of neomalleus struts in ossiculoplasty.

10. Use of sildenafil (Viagra) in the treatment of endolymphatic hydrops. A double blind controlled trial. Senior Investigator, in conjunction with Pfizer Ltd.2000 (Under UQ Ethical auspices)

11. Development of reliable prognostication in ossiculoplasty using pre-operative pathological indicators.
