Personal Statement: My "Integrative Muscle Biology Laboratory" employs molecular biology techniques with in vivo and in vitro models examining muscle plasticity. We have been examining the regulation of muscle wasting with cancer cachexia. We are examining the importance of muscle metabolic capacity on protein turnover and apoptosis regulation during initial and severe stages of wasting.

Courses developed or significantly modified as far as content and requirements by James Carson. EXSC 781 Advanced Exercise Physiology 2, University of South Carolina, Columbia. 2013 – Present. Designed course to cover advanced Exercise Physiology topics. EXSC 695 “Reading and Writing in Research”, University of South Carolina, Columbia. Spring 2003 - Present. I serve as the main instructor for an undergraduate and graduate exercise science majors. The course is a senior level research and design course. Topics include basic research design, data analysis, proposal writing, practical research experience and research presentation.

SCCC 376C “Skeletal Muscle Activity & Disease Prevention”, University of South Carolina, Columbia. I was asked by the South Carolina Honors College to develop and teach an Honors College course that would both educate and stimulate curiosity into biological research, The main objectives related to this course are to teach the scientific research process while learning the relationship of skeletal muscle activity with various physiological conditions related to disease.

EXSC 783 “Research Seminar in Exercise Science”, at the University of South Carolina, Columbia. Course designed to teach the components, and formation process of a scientific proposal. Components covered included introduction, specific aims, literature review, and methodology. Taught 100% of the course. EXSC 780 “Advanced Exercise Physiology I”, at the University of South Carolina, Columbia. Fall 1999- 2005 & 2007 - present The first in a series of required graduate level courses for exercise science masters, DPT and Ph.D. students. Topics were exercise physiology related to cardio-respiratory and skeletal muscle fitness. EXSC 785 “Advanced Exercise Physiology Lab”, at the University of South Carolina, Columbia. Summer 2000- present. A required course for thesis/research track graduate students. The course combines theory based lecture with practical lab experience. EXSC 755C “Special Topics in Exercise Science”, at the University of South Carolina, Columbia. Sum 2000 – 2005, 2014 This series of courses was designed by myself to expand the student’s knowledge of the physiological adaptations to skeletal muscle by reading and synthesizing current and classic research in specific topic areas. Topics: 2000: Skeletal Muscle Adaptation to Resistance Exercise in Youth, Adult and Aged Populations. 2001: Muscle Mass Maintenance / Hypertrophy During Wasting and Disuse. 2002 Aging and Skeletal Muscle. 2003 Skeletal muscle and hormones. 2004 Morphological and functional adaptations to resistance training. 2005 Cellular mechanisms of muscle growth 2014 Skeletal muscle adaptation to resistance training and overload with aging and disease (ORTAD)

EXSC 880 “Myology” at the University of South Carolina Columbia. A doctoral level course for Applied Physiology tract students. This course provides an in depth examination of skeletal muscle adaptation to exercise and training. Physiology for the Health Sciences at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, Columbia. Spring 2000- 2002. I taught the muscle physiology portion of this course designed for all health science graduate students at the University of South Carolina. The course is offered through the Physiology and Pharmacology Department at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine.
