    ■ 1U1V Earth House, WAN (Residential) Award, UK Post-earthquake reconstruction demonstration project of Guangming Village in Zhaotong, China by The Chinese University of Hong Kong --- World Architecture News Awards “I think it’s great. What's really exciting about this is that you’ve got a bunch of experts and they’ve gone into a local context where they've identified a problem and rather than just steam rolling in with their own ideas, they’ve talked to the people about how they live, how they build, what the problems are and they’ve really worked with people to form a solution.” Andrew Waugh “This project demonstrates how tradition and technology can be combined to positively progress a localised vernacular. This achieves more than an impulse to maintain an area's heritage; it provides a way forward to house vulnerable families in a typology which is equally functional, repeatable and joyful!” Carl Vann “It’s just so really great, it’s exceptional.” Lotta Nyman

    ■ 1U1V Earth House, WAF World Building of the Year The judges believed this to be an extraordinary project in terms of the scope of ambition, exemplified in the addressing of profound problems facing ordinary people. They applauded the re-use of traditional material and construction methods but with the addition of new technology - combining ancient wisdom with modern know-how. The judges were also impressed by the iterative research process which could be re-applied to anywhere in the world affected by seismic problems and low levels of wealth. “The architects succeeded in translating ‘four walls and a roof’ into something which, through architectural commitment, becomes a project that is much more profound,” WAF Programme Director Paul Finch commented. “This building is a demonstration that architecture is just as relevant in the poorest of communities as it is in the richest.”

    ■ 1U1V Earth House, Architectural Review House Award, UK Jamie Fobert: ‘From the generous rooms to the considered details, the winning anti-seismic house offers not only a local and cost-

effective construction template but also a home of charm, in which the owners have real pride.’

Tony Fretton: ‘The importance of research behind the anti-seismic house is undeniable but what is equally striking is the spatial quality and materiality of the house. It is a complete piece of architecture reflecting a deep understanding of local society.’

    TEACHING (AT CUHK SINCE 1999)

In the CUHK, Edward has been teaching Architectural Design Studios, lecturing on Environmental Design, and supervising Design and Research Theses. Edward’s teaching is rooted in his philosophy teaching architecture in a practical, technologically proven and creative manner. He is particularly keen on investigating the technologic and tactile quality of design. He calls this Technics. This involves

sensibility and an appreciation of the quality of materials and spaces; the quantities of the environment, building dynamics, gravity, production and process; and most importantly, the human experiential responses and needs. A motto to his students is: To make a building energy efficient and technologically sound is not that difficult, to compose it beautifully and poetically at the same time requires one’s lifetime pursuit.

In 2003, recognizing the latent needs of Sustainable Design in the profession, Edward single-handedly initiated and launched the MSc in Sustainable and Environment Design Programme. It provides advanced training to professionals of the construction industry. (www.sustain-cuhk.info).

Designing High Density Cities ‘An outstanding collection of papers on a key issue in planning today. Starting with the essentials of high density building, this book then explores the complex relations of high-density metropolitan areas…It goes without saying that the combination of such important themes fills a gap in our knowledge and that no planner can ignore this book’ Tejo Spit, Professor of Urban and Regional Planning, Utrecht University, The Netherlands
