Ann V. Millard

Ann Millard is a faculty member in the Department of Social and Behavioral Health, School

of Rural Public Health, Health Science Center, Texas A&M University System. She works at the South Texas Center in McAllen, a research and distance education site near the Texas border with Mexico. Since coming to the center in 2002, she has won 10 grants and participated in 15 research and service delivery projects. Recently she submitted a book manuscript under contract on maternal and child health. She has taught 3 classes at the South Texas Center for the School of Rural Public Health, and 12 continuing education workshops at regional and national meetings, including the American Public Health Association.

Millard received her Ph.D. in anthropology in 1980 from the University of Texas at Austin.

She was a faculty member in the Department of Anthropology and the College of Human Medicine at Michigan State University from 1980 to 2002. She taught anthropology and cultural aspects of medicine, directed the Office on Women in International Development, and edited Medical Anthropology Quarterly, an international journal published by the American Anthropological Association.

She was also a Senior Research Scholar at the Julian Samora Research Institute, and her most

recent book is Apple Pie and Enchiladas: Latino Newcomers in the Rural Midwest. The award-winning book is a multiauthored, multidisciplinary publication on new immigrants from Mexico in the rural Midwest in the 1990s, their reasons for arriving, and how they were received by townspeople (USDA Grant No. 97 36200 5207, 1998-2003, to Michigan State University).

Millard's research interests include medical anthropology, community engagement, and population-level prevention of chronic disease. She has specialized in social determinants of health and health disparities in Mexico and the United States. Her methodological approach includes ethnography, quantitative techniques, and participatory, community-based approaches. She has received funding for 30 research and service projects and fellowships. Her current projects deal with border health, early diabetes prevention, reproductive health, and farmworker health. Millard's publications include two books, 20 refereed articles, 5 book chapters, and 81 other publications and reports. She has carried out ethnographic research and advised on anthropological projects on health and household economics in a number of countries in Latin America, Africa, and Asia.

During 30 years of university teaching, Millard has taught 3 graduate classes in public health,

12 undergraduate courses, 10 graduate courses, and as co-instructor, 11 medical school courses. She organized internships in the U.S. and Africa for undergraduate and graduate students, and served on graduate students’ committees at two universities in the U.S. and at the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City. She recently assisted the Border Health Academy, FSU Cares, for medical students at Florida State University. She has supported, supervised, and published with a number of undergraduate and graduate students, including African American, Mexican American, and international students. Of graduate students whose committees she chaired, 10 have gone on to university faculty positions in anthropology, gender studies, and medicine; 7 are in the United States, 3 in the Philippines, Canada, and South Africa, and others work in applied health research, including one who works at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
