Project #: Funding Agency: NIH Title: Increasing the Pipeline: Latino Training in Cancer Control Research Status: Active Period: 08/2008 - 07/2015 Role: Principal Investigator % Effort: 15 Total Costs: $1,494,032.00 Grant Detail: The racial/ethnic makeup of the populations who bear the greatest health burden is not mirrored in the demographics of the scientists who would seek to eliminate these disparities on their behalves. Latinos, for instance, suffer huge health disparities compared to other populations, yet they have notably fewer doctoral students than master’s -level students in health-related fields. The field of cancer control research in particular is notably lacking in ethnic diversity despite disparities that exist between ethnic populations. The Minority Training Program in Cancer Control Research (MTPCCR), continually and successfully funded for nearly the last decade, was first developed at UCSF in northern California and replicated at UCLA in southern California, was designed to encourage minority master’s -level students in health sciences to pursue doctoral degrees and careers in cancer control research. Program results show significant improvements in intentions to apply to doctoral study programs, and a majority of alumni intend to work in cancer control research. The success of the California program highlighted an opportunity to adapt it to other geographic areas, namely the Southwestern U.S. and its large Latino population. The current proposal for the Texas program, “Increasing the Pipeline: Latino Training Program for Cancer Control Research” (LTPCCR), builds upon the original model, which calls for a five-day Summer Institute and internship opportunities to train participants in cancer control research and doctoral study, and adds a new support component that provides counseling as needed during the doctoral process and a doctoral student retreat.

Project #: SAB08-00005 Funding Agency: Susan G. Komen Foundation Title: Rx for Better Breast Health Status: Active Period: 04/2013 - 08/2015 Role: Principal Investigator % Effort: 2 Total Costs: $450,000.00 Grant Detail: This randomized controlled trial will test the impact of a patient-navigated, anti-inflammatory, culinary-based intervention (reinforced by motivational interviewing [MI] and tailored newsletters) on obese (body mass index [BMI] 30+), early-stage (0-IIIA) breast cancer survivors, compared to a control group. The intervention will stimulate dietary behavior changes using individualized anti-inflammatory dietary prescriptions with six monthly workshops (culinary demonstrations, recipes and meal planning) and behavior-change cues reinforced through evidence- and theory-based patient navigation, motivational interviewing, and tailored newsletters personalized to individual readiness for change. Study findings will fill a significant gap in our understanding of how a culinary-based anti-inflammatory dietary prescription can alter dietary intake and reduce inflammatory biomarkers in cancer survivors. This may help us understand if an increase in anti-inflammatory foods will lead to reduced cancer risk through reduction of cancer-related biomarkers.
