WISDOM I need to make the wise choice. FAITH I can trust God no matter what. FRIENDSHIP I should treat others the way I want to be treated.

CREATE THE ENVIRONMENT: BASE CAMPThe theme for June and July this

summer is Base Camp: Get Ready for

the Climb! Because this is nine weeks

long, it’s a great opportunity to really

theme out your stage and hallways

and create a fun atmosphere all

summer!

Think about a Mt. Everest expedition or

Disneyland’s Matterhorn® with giant

snow-capped mountains and rock-

faces as you plan your environment.

You could go all out and build

mountain-scapes out of papier-

mâché or pink insulation board (for

sale at most large hardware stores).

Paint your “mountains” to look

like Mt. Everest or other famous

mountain peaks.

ABOUT

GODGod is the one and only true God, yet He

exists in three persons: God the Father,

God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

God is the Creator, so everything belongs

to Him and is under His control. God is

holy, so He is righteous, majestic, and

loving. God is all knowing and purposeful,

so He’s at work to bring about His will. No

person, thing, or idea compares to God.

ABOUT

THE BIBLEGod reveals Himself to us through the

Bible, and it is 100% accurate, reliable, and

authoritative.

ABOUT

PEOPLEPeople are made in God’s image and for

His pleasure. But everybody falls short of

God’s intention, or ideal, for people. In

other words, everyone has sinned. As a

result, we are all separated from Him, even

though He wants an intimate relationship

with each of us.

ABOUT

SALVATIONThat’s why Jesus—God’s Son—came and

lived on this earth, died, and rose again.

God offers His free gift of salvation to all

who believe in Jesus and accept Him as

Savior—the only way to be forgiven and

reconciled to God. Anyone who accepts

this gift is adopted as a son or daughter

into God’s family and will live with Him

forever in heaven.

FOR LEADERS ONLYGOD VIEW: THE CONNECTION BETWEEN WISDOM, FAITH, & FRIENDSHIP ANDGOD’S CHARACTER, AS SHOWN THROUGH GOD’S BIG STORY

When we look at the life and teaching

of Jesus, we’re reminded how

important it is to go back to the basics.

Luke gives us some insight into how

Jesus grew up. Luke 2:52 notes that

Jesus grew in wisdom and in favor with

God and others. Throughout our lives,

we should also circle back to these

ideas as we seek to live like Jesus.

These are the basics: Wisdom—I

need to make the wise choice;

Faith—I can trust God no matter what;

Friendship—I should treat others the

way I want to be treated.

Wisdom: Jesus taught that the best

way to learn what we should do is by

listening to God’s Word. The Bible

teaches us the wise choice for many

situations.

Faith: Jesus came to earth to

physically show us God’s love. We can

grow stronger faith in God because we

have seen what He did through Jesus.

Friendship: Jesus walked every day

with His friends, allowing them to

get to know Him, teaching them, and

helping their hurts. By following Jesus’

example, we can know how we should

treat others.

When we return to these ideas we can

begin to discover what God is doing in

us to change the world around us. This

summer we’re heading back to the

basics, where we’ll learn from Jesus’

life, teachings, and example.

This month, let’s think about how:

(1) God reveals Himself through the

person of Jesus Christ who lived the

perfect life on our behalf.

(2) If we want to be more like Jesus

we should strive to grow as He did in

wisdom, faith, and friendship.

(3) The Bible is the source of wisdom

and informs how we can have faith

as God uses us to change the world

around us.

This week, we’re discovering:

In this week’s Bible story, Jesus calls

Matthew to follow leave his post as tax

collector and follow Him (Matthew

9:9-13). Most of the Jews hated

Matthew, but when Jesus accepted

him, it showed that anyone could

follow Jesus.

Our Bottom Line is God is doing

something in me to help me follow

Him. No one is too bad or too good

to follow Jesus. God, through the Holy

Spirit, is working in us to grow us to be

more like Jesus.

The monthly memory verse is: “And

Jesus grew in wisdom and stature,

and in favor with God and men.”

Luke 2:52 NIrV When we respond to

God and follow where He leads, we

will see ourselves develop in wisdom,

faith, and friendship. Then we will

be able to set the example for other

people.

PLUG IN: FOCUS THE ENERGYFocus the energy on today’s Bible story in a Small Group setting with an engaging discussion question and an interactive opening activity.

Before kids arrive, pray for each regular attendee by name. Pray for those who might visit your group for the first time. Ask God to give the kids the courage to step out and follow Him this week. Pray they will remember God accepts them no matter what. And pray they will accept others and lead them in following God.

1. EARLY ARRIVER IDEAWhat You Need: An offering container

What You Do:Collect kids’ offerings as they arrive. Ask questions such as: Who are your heroes? Who do you want to be like? Who do you want to follow? Why?

2. COPYCATWhat You Need: No supplies

What You Do:Choose one kid to be the “Guesser.” He will turn around and close his eyes while you silently choose a “Leader” from the other kids. When the Guesser turns around, the kid Leader will do various movements that the other kids will mimic as quickly as possible, while trying not to get caught or be too obvious. The Guesser gets three tries to guess who the Leader is. Play until all kids have been the Guesser or until time runs out.

What You Say:“You all did a great job of guessing, AND you did a great job of following what the leader did. Let’s go to Large Group, where we’ll hear about someone else we should follow.”

Lead your group to the Large Group area.

CATCH ON: MAKE THE CONNECTIONMake the connection of how today’s Bible story applies to real life experiences through interactive activities and discussion questions.

1. WHO WOULD JESUS CHOOSE? (application activity / review the Bible story)What You Need: “People” (Activity Pages), crayons

What You Do:Give each kid an Activity Page. Help them identify each of the people. Ask kids to draw a picture of themselves in the empty space. Then instruct kids to cut the pictures apart.

What You Say:“You know what? Jesus wants ALL of these people to follow Him, no matter what they’ve done in the past. God is doing something in me to help me follow Him, and He is doing something in you to help you follow Him. Let’s remember that Jesus wants everyone—even the bully who called you names or the kid who stole your friend’s favorite pencil—to follow Him.”

2. THE LITTLE VOICE (application activity)What You Need: No supplies

What You Do:God helps us follow Him by reminding us of things that He has taught us. Remind kids that in Large Group, you heard about how it’s like there’s a “little voice” in our heads telling us what to do so we can make wise choices. Explain that you’re going to play a game of telephone, where you’ll whisper something that God might want to remind you into one kid’s ear, who whispers it to the next kid, and so on around the circle. After each one, talk about different times kids might need to remember it.

Examples of what the “little voice” might say:

What You Say: “God is doing something in me to help me follow Him. One of the things He does is remind me of the things

He has taught me so I can make wise choices and remember He loves and cares about me all the time.” (Tell kids about a recent time when God reminded you of something He has taught you that helped you make

the wise choice. Make sure it’s age-appropriate.)

3. A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS (memory verse activity / great for boys)What You Need: “Memory Verse Phrases” (Activity Pages), tape

What You Do:Give each kid a phrase with a piece of tape on the back. Line them up so they’re not in the right order. Instruct the first kid to close his eyes or walk backwards toward the wall. The next kid in line will give him instructions about where to go to put the phrase on the wall (For example: take one step to the right, take two big steps to the left, raise your hands up a little higher, etc.). Continue until all phrases have been put on the wall in the right order. (If you don’t have a wall, they can put the phrases on the floor or a table.)

What You Say:“You did a great job of following the instructions your friends gave you. God wants us to follow Him like that, too. He wants us to follow His instructions and to do the things He wants us to do. He wants us to make the wise choice, trust Him no matter what, and treat others the way we want to be treated. God is doing something in you and God is doing something in me to help me follow Him.”

PRAY AND DISMISSWhat You Need: No supplies

What You Do: Ask kids to sit in a circle. Instruct the kid on your right to pray the following prayer for the kid on his right: “God, help _____ to follow You.” The next kid will pray for the kid on his right, and so on around the circle. Do it again for the kid to the left, across the circle, and so on. They might also want to give their friends fun nicknames as they pray for them, such as Rockin’ Riley, Cool Cale, and so on.
