Curriculum Day – 20th October Next Thursday is a school wide curriculum day. No students

are required at school on this day. Teachers will be examining

the new curriculum which will be fully implemented in 2017.

Headlice Follow up Checks

Follow up checks will take place next Monday, 17th

October 9.30am after assembly.

Could helpers please come to the staffroom 10 minutes

earlier for a quick meeting.

School Payment Policies A reminder to parents about our Camps and Excursions

payment policies, as is clearly stated within these policies

payments are due 2 weeks prior to a camp and 2 school days

prior to a performance or excursion. Many reminders are

provided and we appreciate parents working hard to have

payments finalised by the due date.

Chinese Students Arrival This week we welcomed our 5 Chinese students Cherry,

Elaine, Matthew, Becky and Suri to White Hills PS. Their

teacher Rylee is also working within the school, providing

sessions with grades on what school is like in China, for the 8

weeks they are here.

Factors Contributing To Children’s Resilience 1. The individual traits of the child, such as assertiveness,

empathy for others and a sense of humour.

2. Relationships, including parenting, that meet the child’s

needs, getting along with others and being accepted by their

peers.

3. Community contexts, such as safety, security and routines,

4. Cultural factors, such as affiliation with a religious

organisation, clubs and groups and tolerance of different ideas

and beliefs.

Prep Familiarisation Days Our first Prep Familiarisation Days for children

and in the outside play area. Children will be allocated one of

Prep Familiarisation Days Cont:

Our second Familiarisation Days will be held on Tuesday, 22nd

November and Wednesday, 23rd

November, from

9.45am to 11.45am. Notices with full details of our first Familiarisation Day will be distributed in Pre-schools or sent to parents by

the start of next term. If you do not receive a note please contact Jan Ellis.

We ask that your child attends school on the allocated Familiarisation Day they receive, as children enrolled at White Hills Primary,

will attend in smaller groups over the two days to help them feel comfortable in their new school environment. Please do not change

your day to another session as this results in an imbalance of student numbers.

Exercise If children learn to love exercise at an early age, they will be more likely to grow up having exercise as a part of their lives. Physical

activity is critically important for bone health, preventing unhealthy levels of weight gain and self-esteem. Development and mastery

of fundamental movement skills, such as throwing, catching, balancing, running and jumping, are important from a very young age

because this has been shown to be associated with participation in physical activity. Children who are highly active have better

quality and longer sleep than inactive children.

10 ways to get kids active

*Limit television/computer/video games. *Make activity safe-drink water regularly, wear good fitting shoes, warm up, cool down.

*Establish a routine and set a time aside each day for physical activity. *Play with your children. *Take advantage of incidental

exercise-take the stairs, etc. *Support your children’s sporting efforts. *Buy gifts that encourage children to be active-balls, bats, bike.

*Let your children choose the activity- dancing, bush walking, playground, bike ride, etc. *If wet exercise inside-dance, play with

balloons. *Walk your children to school or part of the way if you live a distance away.

Prep News Pupils Of The Week Congratulations to Piper, Nik, Georgie, Cash and Alex, our Prep “Pupils of the Week” for this week. These Preps are becoming

confident and resilient at school. Well done!

School Fair The Prep grades require suitable items for Lucky Dips and Lucky bags for our activities at the school fair. We will also be holding a

“Guess Where Clifford’s Flea Is” contest and ask that each Prep child brings a small chocolate bar, chocolate frog or wrapped lollies

to be used as a prize for this activity. Please leave these items with your child’s teacher.

Walk To School in October Over October we are encouraging the Prep children to participate in the Walk to School program. Children can ride, walk or scoot to

and from school and the number of days they participate are recorded on a chart in our rooms. You can walk your children part of the

way to school if you live a distance away. Eg from the Botanical Gardens.

Prep ‘INSECT-A-MANIA’ Mini Beasts Incursion

On Monday, 17th

October, Wild Action Productions will be bringing their ‘Insect-A-Mania’ Mini beast workshop to WHPS.

The workshop is a safe, hands-on wildlife experience for Prep students only. Each grade will attend the workshop for an hour session.

Hints For The Week *As part of a routine, read aloud daily for at least 10 minutes. *Read three or four short stories daily. If your child loves a book, read

it repeatedly. *Various books are suitable, including picture and beginners' ones, especially those with rhyme. *Read with expression,

feeling and animation. *Let children laugh at and sing about words.

Correcting Mistakes when Reading:

If the mistake does not make sense, lead the child to correct the mistake by allowing time to self- correct. If the child does not self-

correct after about 30 seconds, ask him/her to reread, then, if the child does not notice the error, ask “Does that make sense?”

Prep Swimming Program

The Prep swimming program will continue on the 19th

and 21st October, at the Eaglehawk Leisure Centre, YMCA indoor heated

pool.

October is ‘Walk to School’ month at White Hills Primary. In each classroom we have a walking chart for students to fill in each day

if they have walked to school or partly walked to school. There are some amazing prizes on offer this year, so we would love to see

all of our grade 5 students walking every day. If students travel by car to school, consider dropping students off a block before the

school so that they can add that to their chart.

Next Thursday, 20th

October there will be NO SCHOOL due to our Curriculum Day.

Next Friday, 21st October all grade 5 and grade 6 students will have the opportunity to participate in the St John of God Ambulance

Victoria workshops. Students will learn basic first aid techniques and gain some valuable hands on experience with health and safety.
