(2) ARTD-45B (Multimedia II: Intermediate Web Design and Animation) 3 units: 2 hours lecture, 3 hours lab. Prerequisite: ARTD-45A Advisory: AOM-50A; ENGL-85 Courses Related in Content: Graphic Design

This studio course further imparts a thorough intermediate-level approach to creative Adobe Flash digital media production for the web. Indispensable intermediate typographic, color, illustration, animation, interactivity, layout, and sound design concepts feature strongly in the class. The course's interactive Flash and new HTML 5 web technology techniques prepare students for producing imaginative web sites and multimedia projects.

Items 6A.1 (ARTD-42B) and 6A.2 (ARTD-45B) were pulled by Dee Near. Dee stated that the one comparable course listed in CurricUNET is an upper division course at CSU Long Beach. Julie Clark stated that we have a policy that any transferable course is required to have 3 comparable courses at different higher institutions. Dee suggested if these are not meant to transfer that they be numbered 50-79.

Jodie Steeley inquired on why ARTD-45B contains Flash in the description and course content, when this computer software is no longer used in the industry. Discussion occurred and it was recommended that Alana Perlin attend the meeting to address these concerns.

Luis Flores inquired on if the AA Art degree approved on September 3rd Curriculum Committee meeting will also include these new courses. Louisa Benhissen said these courses are intended for the AA/CT in Digital Art.

Return items 6A.1 and 6A.2, request the minimum 3 comparable transfer courses at higher institutions.

Items 7A.1a (ARTD-41A) and 7A.1b (ARTD-41B) were pulled by Dee Near. Dee stated these courses were denied for the same area in both CSU-GE and IGETC Breadth in Fall 2014 because the reviews stated these courses were skills based. Dee questioned whether or not these courses have the rigor required to receive approval.

Susan Walsh advised against us sending forward something that would not get approved. Resubmitting courses year in and year out will give Merced College a negative impression with the CSU/UC reviewers of these proposals.

John Albano stated these are not skills based courses and do contain theory and history components. John also stated that the CSU’s can have their own approval for their GE courses. Several CSU’s have these courses set to fulfill these GE areas.

Susan Walsh advised that the committee can block these submissions. Lou Ferguson recommended faculty read the General Education Breadth documents

that are in CurricUNET, to see if a class will qualify for GE. Louisa Benhissen stated that ARTD-40A and ARTD-40B were recently approved to

fulfill these areas on IGETC and CSU-GE Breadth. Louisa stated they are substantially changing many of their Art curriculum to include more theory and history to qualify for GE Breadth.

Susan Walsh stated that a substantial change will require these to be new courses and require a new program. These changes will require approval from the Accreditation Commission in addition to the Chancellor’s Office.

Dee Near stated that the IGETC and CSU-GE Breath Guidelines states that courses for these area are to be theory based and not skills based.

John Albano stated he talked with a professor at CSU Long Beach and he advised that we revise our curriculum and resubmit it.

Susan Walsh stated this is a committee decision and she will support the final outcome. Susan cautions us on submitting the same course repeatedly.

Lou Ferguson stated that she sent the Dean and Julie Clark a summary of all the Curriculum changes for Summer 2015. The CSUs want to know what changes were substantial. Kevin Kistler is the only Dean that has responded.

Do not send forward items 7A.1a and 7A.1b.

Items 8A.1 (ESL-80), 8A.2 (ESL-83), and 8A.3 (ESL-92B) were pulled by Dee Near. Dee

inquired on inactivating these courses, without having other ESL courses in place.

Denise Rempel stated that ESL-80 and ESL-83 have never been offered since they were approved, while ESL-92B has only been offered a couple of times over the past 5 to 6 years.

Vince Piro stated that our students do not want ESL courses and have suffered from low enrollment.

Steve Meidinger inquired on how eliminating these courses would impact the student placement results.

Greg Soto and Luis Flores stated that the ESL sequence would need to be revalidated if these courses are eliminated.

Denise Rempel inquired on how students are being accommodated now, if these courses are not being offered.

Susan Walsh stated that we must assess SLOs for our courses that exists in the Chancellor’s Inventory. The Accreditation Commissions wonders why we have courses in the Inventory if we never offer them.

Greg Soto stated that ESL-92A has no prerequisite, but if ESL-92B is inactivated students would not have a course to go into after that.

Jennifer Gardner inquired on why we should have these courses if they are not going to serve a purpose.

Hold off on inactivating items 8A.1, 8A.2, and 8A.3 until all the English Curriculum changes come forward to the committee.

9. AGENDA 5

A. Program Modification (1) Diagnostic Medical Sonography (12800.CT)

B. Program Modification per Chancellor’s Office Request (2) A.A. Theatre Arts (10600.AA)

Item 9B.2 (A.A. Theatre Arts) was pulled by Julie Clark. Julie stated that this

program has a goal of “Transfer” so we had to justify that 51+% of the program transfers to a CSU/UC. The Articulation Agreement by Major with CSU Fresno, states that student can only use DRAM-01 or DRAM-08 or DRAM-23, so only one of these can count towards the 51+%. Julie worked with Carin Heidelbach and the only change was to add DRAM-13 or DRAM-16 to the required core to give students the option of a concentration in their major.

Susan Walsh thanked the Theatre Arts faculty and Julie Clark for working together to get this item resolved.

Approve Agenda 5A.

10. BUSINESS A. Information: Program Investigations

(1) Child Development: School Age Care Specialization (CT) (2) Mechatronics/Automated System Technology (AA/CT) Julie Clark stated this is informational and just wanted to inform the committee of

future Program Investigation. Susan Walsh stated that there was an email about a hold on Child Development. Stacey Roduner stated that the faculty would like to put this investigation off to the

Spring 2016 semester. Bill Walls stated that the Mechatronic program is supporting local business. Aaron

Hamilton went to local business and no one knew what this was.

B. Discussion: English Curriculum Changes Susan Walsh suggested we pull this item and add it to the next agenda. Denise Rempel asked Julie Clark if we could move this forward on the agenda, Julies

response was we could only move it to item 10A. Denise also stated the faculty are anticipating these courses to be offered starting in Summer 2016. Denise offered to attend other area cohort meetings to inform faculty on these changes.

Susan Walsh stated that is if the Curriculum Committee approves it. Susan also stated that the next area meeting will be a school wide area meeting regarding SLO Assessments and Program Review.

Denise Rempel inquired on why English is being brought up for discussion before the items are on the agenda.

Sue Norris stated that English curriculum impacts all courses and program at Merced College.

Denise Rempel inquired on why mathematics does not have to come forward with changes before being placed on the agenda.

Julie Clark stated that mathematics has not made any major changes to their curriculum. The only change recently was adding MATH-25 as a prerequisite to MATH-02. Discussion did take place with other disciplines that were impacted by the calculus sequence, such as science and with the guidance cohort.

John Albano stated that English and mathematics are the gateway to the college and these changes have major impacts on the district as a whole.

C. Discussion: 2016-2017 Meeting Times

This item was tabled to a future agenda.

D. Discussion: Associate Degree Breadth Requirements and Title 5 This item was tabled to a future agenda.
