Caio Azevedo - Curriculum
Caio Azevedo is a composer and cellist. He was born in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil in 1993. He
began his musical studies on the piano in 2007, through the extension program of the
Universidade Federal da Bahia (Federal University of Bahia), two years later (at the age of 15),
he began his studies in cello with Ivana Dudnik (São Paulo, Brazil). In the same year he joined
as a cellist in NEOJIBA (State Centers for the Youth and Children’s Orchestras of Bahia)
besides the activity as orchestra musician (Youth Orchestra of Bahia, Symphonic Orchestra of
Bahia, Symphonic Orchestra of the University of Bahia) studied conducting through the same
institution (Neojiba) with Eduardo Torres and was invited to participate as professor and
assistant conductor of the Youth Choir of Bahia, ICEIA (2011/2012). Participates in 2011 of the
International Taller of Choral Conducting in Bogota, Colombia, having as teacher María
Guinand and Alberto Grau (Venezuela).
He worked as a orchestra musician as a member of YOBA (Youth Orchestra of Bahia) on
tour in Brazil, Europe and United States in important concert halls such as: Konzerthaus
(Berlin), Victoria Hall (Geneva), Queen Elizabeth Hall (London),
Sala São Paulo (SP/Brazil) , Helzberg Hall (Kansas City), among others. With the same
orchestra, accompanied renowned soloists such as: Martha Argerich (Argentina), Lang Lang
(China), Shlomo Mintz (Israel), Emmanuele Baldini (Italy), Edicson Ruiz (Venezuela), Jean-
Yves Thibaudet (France).He works also as a chamber musician.
As a composer, is a founding member of GCN (Group of Composers of Neojiba) project that
aims to dedicate compositions and arrangements for children and youth instrumentalists,
chamber groups and orchestras in social and musical education in Brazil along with an active
dialogue in the current socialcultural scene with focus on human development of these children
through music in Neojiba, having as the group founder, the composer Renato de Aguiar
(Switzerland/Brazil)
He had works presented in GCN concerts [2012-2014] such as: Cycle of Poems, for soprano
and piano; Five Little Fables over a White Sea, for Double Bass Solo, String Trio and Harp;
Sonata, for Gran Cassa and Two Double Basses of 5 strings; Ciranda (Roda de Sacrifício), for
three percussionists. Symphonic pieces for the Orchestra of the University of Bahia and Youth
Orchestra of Bahia. Chamber music for Radamés Gnattali String Quartet (Brazil), Camará
Ensemble (Brazil), MIVOS String Quartet (USA). Music for film include: soundtrack for the
TVUFBa, The Sailing Conductors and “O Filme de Carlinhos” (The Movie of Charlie), directed
by Henrique Filho and produced by Voo Audiovisual.
Participated as cellist: in the FEMUSC 9º edition (SC/Brazil), Strings Academy in Santo
André, BA with the pianist Ricardo Castro (Brazil) and violinist Markus Daunert (Germany),
MeT (Music in Trancoso – BA , 2012/2013), Festival Música nas Montanhas (Poços de Caldas,
Brazil) and as composer, he was one of seven selected composers in South America for the 45º
Festival Internacional de Inverno de Campos de Jordão ( Brazil, 2014) where he studied with
Anna Clyne (England), he also participated of the composition workshop of Neojiba with
Wellington Gomes (Brazil), Renato de Aguiar (Switzerland/Brazil) and Miguel Scebba
(Argentina) and recently receive a scholarship to participate as a composer of the Festival SESC
de Música (Pelotas – Brazil, 2015).
In 2014 he was awarded with the Lindembergue Cardoso Composition Prize in Bahia offered
by MAB (Music of Today in Bahia).
Currently he is cellist of the Youth Orchestra of Bahia and Symphonic Orchestra of the
University of Bahia, teacher of Musical Theory, Composer/Arranger in Neojiba, he finished his
bachelor in cello at Universidade Federal da Bahia (2014.2) and starts his Master’s degree in the
same institution in 2015. He studies cello with Prof. Dr. Suzana Kato and composition with
Prof. Dr. Paulo Costa Lima.
