On May 10, Officer Levi Williams (O15) notified the Shift Lieutenant Bryan Morton, and the Newport News Shipbuilding’s Communications Center, via radio about a boat in the James River that appeared to be in distress and heading toward the shipyard.

“There was a storm passing through with high winds, heavy rain and hail,” said Daryl Jenerette (O15). “It looked like the boat was attempting to dock along the seawall next to an emergency ladder, so Officer George Horne (O15) and I responded immediately and went over to the boat. When we got onsite, we saw that the two elderly passengers were having difficulty exiting the boat.”

NNS Officers Jenerette and Horne boarded the boat and helped the passengers secure the boat to the seawall just south of Dry Dock 12.

“There were a total of four passengers on the boat including two elderly passengers that we helped climb up the ladder,” said Horne. “Once on the dock,

we sheltered the passengers at a nearby shed for safety, and gathered information for a report until the storm passed and were able to get them back on their boat.”

Since the incident, the family has contacted the officers to thank them for their assistance.

If shipbuilders ever see a boat in distress along the waterfront or an unfamiliar boat attempting to dock or get close to NNS’ waterfront perimeter, they should immediately call the Security Communications Center at 380-2222 or *911 and monitor the vessel until an NNS security boat or mobile patrol units arrive.

This Week in NNS HistoryOn June 18, 1917, a job order was issued to build a four-story brick annex to Newport News Shipbuilding’s main office building. This was the second of four additions to a building shipyard founder Collis P. Huntington thought was original-ly built larger than necessary. Today, the building is known as Bldg. 86 and still houses office space for shipbuilders.

On May 14, 36 shipbuilders received a Master of Science Degree in Systems Engineering from George Washington University (GWU) during a graduation ceremony held at the Crowne Plaza in Hampton. During the ceremony, Newport News Shipbuilding Chief Engineer Charles Southall was the keynote speaker.

He also challenged the group to use their newly-acquired skills to advance the nation’s industrial base and to “leave the engineering profession a little better than they found it.”

Huntington Ingalls Industries and GWU teamed to offer this degree program on-site at NNS. HII and GWU plan to offer
