Both programs focus on benefits of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) in the workplace. “It is inspiring to see so much enthusiasm and initiative among our young people in Newport News,” said John Shifflett, director of leadership, technical and professional development. “These programs do a great job of helping students connect the dots between what they are learning in the classroom and how it will apply in the workplace. We hope our participation will help students recognize the importance of their education and the many opportunities available to them if they follow a STEM career path.” Heritage High School students visited the shipyard March 13-29, and participants from the Make It Work program were at NNS April 3-5. Students met with members of the shipyard leadership team, experienced engineering and information technology at work in the shipyard and saw first-hand the importance of career readiness skills in the workplace. X42 Pipefitters Recognized for Performance

CYBER T.I.P.S. Retrieve Print Jobs ImmediatelyDo not leave important, sensitive or confidential material laying around the office. Common print areas are frequented by people coming and going. Often, other individuals may handle printouts before they are retrieved. This could lead to unauthorized info disclosure. Always use the closest printer or a dedicated printer for confidential info. If sensitive documents cannot be picked up in a timely manner, use Secure Print, a feature offered by Newport News Shipbuilding’s Managed Print Services (Source: SANS).

On April 3, Pipe Shop leadership recognized X42 pipefitters with a pizza luncheon for their outstanding performance installing chilled water piping on Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78).

“The chilled water (CW) system demands on the Ford are far greater, required much earlier and more mission critical than ever before,” said X88 Superintendent Donny Suits. “For the first time, the CW system

CVN 69 RC Remediation Team Recognized Shipbuilders on the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) Reactor Compartment (RC) Remediation Team were treated to a luncheon on March 2 for their support and successful completion of the CVN 69 RC Remediation. The team worked closely with Norfolk Naval Station Shipyard and successfully completed all work with first time quality, on schedule and below budget.

“As a direct result of the team’s dedicated work ethic and tireless efforts through several holiday periods, the team has clearly exceeded customer satisfaction expectations,” said Richard Coleman, program director of In-Service Aircraft Carriers. “A special thank you to all on the team who assisted in the planning, production and support efforts to make the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower work effort a complete success.”

CVN 65 Repair Team RecognizedOn March 29, shipbuilders on the USS Enterprise (CVN 65) Repair Team were recognized by leadership with a dinner for their outstanding work. The team has performed lead maintenance work on CVN 65 in Norfolk over the past decade.

“We wanted to honor and recognize the people who had truly made this team what it is,” said Doug McPherson, CVN 65 Construction Director. “It was their talents and efforts on the deck plates that made the CVN 65 Team successful and established the excellent reputation with our customer that we have today.”

Earn a Master of Science in Systems EngineeringJoin George Washington University’s Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Off-Campus Programs Office and Huntington Ingalls Industries as they team up to offer the fourth graduate education program on-site at Newport News Shipbuilding. Shipbuilders interested in the program are encouraged to attend an upcoming luncheon on May 15 from 12-12:45 p.m. at VASCIC (2 West). RSVP is required by May 11 to [email protected].

Newport News Shipbuilding’s Earth Day clean-up event will be held on April 19 at 3:30 p.m. at Christopher Newport Park. Volunteers are required to register on the Earth Day Yardnet website. OFI First Quarter Inspirations The Opportunity For Improvement (OFI) program offers every employee a voice - a chance to have their ideas heard and the means to make them happen. Steam Heat Shutdown Underway Facilities and Waterfront Support will begin reducing steam supply for heating purposes to buildings and facilities April 16 through April 22. This will not affect buildings and facilities that require steam to support a process or hotel steam for shipboard service. For special heating needs, call the Facilities Service Desk at 8-9888.
