    India commissions its first StealthWarship INS Shivalik: India on April 29,2010 commissioned its first indigenously-

    built stealth warship with sophisticatedfeatures. With the induction of INS Shivalik,India gained entry into a top club of developed countries having such capability.INS Shivalik-the first of the three-shipProject 17 frigates, was inducted at theMumbai based Mazagon Docks in the

    presence of Defence Minister A.K. Antony.

    Automated Finger Print IdentificationSystems (AFIS): Automated Finger PrintIdentification Systems (AFIS) has beenintroduced by the government in 22 states(including J & K ) and Pondicherry. This

    comes under the Crime and CriminalTracking Network and System (CCTNS).CCTNS is a project under the national-governance plan. Every police station in thecountry will be provided with a fingerprintreader for which Rs.15,000 per police stationhas been earmarked.

    India carries out successful vertical launchof Brahmos: Brahmos, the supersonic cruisemissile, was successfully launched verticallyfrom Naval destroyer INS Ranvir of March21, 2010. It punched a hole in adecommissioned vessel 290 km away in theBay of Bengal off the Orissa Coast. This wasthe 22 nd launch of Brahmos.

    Rajiv Gandhi Grameen LPG Vitarak Yojana: Union Petroleum and Natural GasMinister inaugurated the Rajiv GandhiGrameen LPG Vitarak Yojana as a national

    scheme for providing liquefied petroleum gasto the rural households at Lachhmangarh inSikar district of Rajasthan. This scheme willimprove the cooking conditions in thekitchens of rural women.

    Nuclear-capable, ship-based Dhanush andsurface-to-surface Prithvi-II missiles weresuccessfully flight-tested in quick successionon March 27, 2010 with both systems hittingthe pre-designated targets with a high degreeof accuracy. While Dhanush, a naval variantof Prithvi, was launched first from INSSubhadhra, anchored near Balasoe, off thecoast of Orissa at 5.30 a.m; Prithvi-II wasfired a few minutes later from LaunchComplex-III at the Integrated Test Range,Chandipur.

    Nuclear Security Summit: The 47- nation Nuclear Security Summit was held in theU.S. capital city of Washington D.C. onApril 12-13, 2010. President Obama hostedthe summit.

    BUSINESS AND ECONOMY

    Established on April 1, 1935, the ReserveBank of India, countrys central bank,celebrated 2009-2010 as its PlatinumJubilee year . The year-long celebrationsincluded several events with a series of learning events to showcase the ReserveBank as a knowledge institution, a set of internal events involving current and former RBI staff to reinforce a sense of belongingand inclusiveness among members of theRBI family and the outreach programme.

    UIDAI unveils UIDs logo AADHAR: TheUnique Identification (UID) project, headed

    by Nandan Nilekani, has been renamedAadhaar, which means foundation or support. The UID Authority of India

    (UIDAI), which aims to give the 1.2 billionresidents of the country a unique 12-digitidentification number, also unveiled a newlogo that depicts a yellow-coloured sun witha ginger print in the centre. The logo wasselected after a nation-wide competition thatreceived 2,000 entries.

    Indias first 700 MW Nuclear Plant: Nuclear Power Corporations firindigenously 700 MW pressurized HeavyWater Reactor at Kakrapur Atomic Power Project in Gujarat is expected to becommissioned in 2015. About 70 per cent of excavation of the site in projects Unit-3 atTapi had been completed and the first pour of concrete (for laying the foundation)would take place in June 2010.

    India 23 rd in Tax Misery Index: A study byForbes Asias Tax Misery Index has revealedthat India maintains a relatively low rank of the 23 rd country with the least friendly taxclimate this year. The list is topped by Francewhich ahs the harshest taxes across theworld.

    $1 bn soft loan from World Bank: TheWorld Bank has approved a $1.05illion(around Rs 4,780 crore) soft loan to fund

    Indias ongoing education projects, particularly those aimed at universalelementary education. Of the $1.05 billionloan, the largest ever by the World Bank tofund education, 4750 million has beenearmarked for the banks third loan to SarvaShiksha Abhiyan (SSA); the rest will support200 competitively selected engineeringcolleges.

    Reserve bank of India: Base Rate System:Under the base rate system will replace thecurrent benchmark prime lending rate, bankswould not be allowed to give loans below the

    base rate to anyone. The PLR has been muchabused as banks provide loans to high ratedcorporate below this rate, reflecting lack of transparency in the lending rates and the

    lending process. RBI has on March 10, 2010deferred the implementation of the base ratesystem by three months to July 1, 2010

    India's External Debt: As of December 31,2009 India's total external debt was $ 251.4Billion. Out of this Long term debt was $ 206Billion while the short term debt was $ 45.2Billion.

    State Bank of India: 15,000 businesscorrespondents: In order to expand its presence in the unbanked areas, the StateBank of India intends to hire around 15,000(business correspondents) in 2010-11.Business correspondents and businessfacilitator model would help in taking

    banking facilities to every part of the country,as its not possible for banks to open branchesin every village. Key Role of the business

    correspondents will be to accept deposits andremit money.

    ONGC: First Public Sector Company toreceive Emission Reduction Certificatesfrom UNFCC: On April 5, 2010, ONGCannounces that it has become India's FirstPSU to receive Emission ReductionCertificates from the UN agency UNFC &CC (UNFCCC). The certificate was issued

    on March 18.The first registered CDM project is 'Waste Heat Recovery Project atMumbai High'. There are six registered CDM

    projects of ONGC

    SEBI: Technical Advisory Committee:Indias market regulator Securities andExchange Board of India creates a TechnicalAdvisory Committee to recommendmeasures for changes and improvements inmarket structure in view of the technologicalchanges. This committee will be headed byProfessor S Sadagopan. The committee willalso make recommendations to frameappropriate policies arising out of technological advancements in areas likewireless trading, algorithmic trading andsmart order routing.

    Working groups on Price Rise: The centralgovernment creates 3 high-powered workinggroups on the issue of the price rise. TheCore Committee will be headed by PrimeMinister Manmohan Singh. Working groupon Agricultural Production will be headed byBhupinder Singh Hooda, Chief Minister Haryana. Working group on ConsumersAffairs will be headed by Chief Minister of Gujarat Narendra Modi. Working group onFood and Public Distribution system (PDS)headed by Planning Commission DeputyChairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia. It has

    been decided in a meeting prior to countrywide agitation of the left on the price riseissue

    Annual Monetary Policy Statement:Reserve Bank of India Governor D. Subbaraohas released its annual monetary

    Policy statement on April 20, 2010 for theyear 2010-11. This will be followed by thefirst quarter review of monetary policy for 2010-11 which will be announced on July 27,2010.

    Following are the main points of this policy statement:

    Cash reserve ratio (CRR):CRR is the percentage of cash deposits that

    banks have to maintain with RBI. The latestmove is to hike the CRR by an increase of 25

    basis points from 5.75 to 6.0 percent hastaken effect from April 24. This will suck outRs. 12500 Crores from the banks.

    Repo Rate: Repo Rate is the rate of interestat which the RBI lends money to banks. Thisalso means that Repo Rate is the RBI'slending rate to other banks. In theAnnual Monetary Policy 2010-11 the RBIhas hiked the Repo rate by 25 basis points to5.25 percent. This means that RBI hasincreased its lending rate to other banks by.25%.

    Reverse Repo Rate: Reverse repo rate is therate at which RBI borrows funds from banks.

    This is opposite of repo rate. Reverse reporate is also known as RBI's borrowing rate.Inthe Annual Monetary Policy 2010-11, theRBI has increased the Reverse Repo Rate by25 basis points to 3.75 percent. This meansthat now RBI will provide 0.25% etc. intereston the money which it borrows from the

    banks. An increase in reverse repo rate meansthat banks earn higher returns by lending toRBI.

    Statutory Liquidity Ratio (SLR) : StatutoryLiquidity Ratio is the fraction of liquid assetswhich a bank has to keep as assured amountof funds. The funds may be in the form of cash, gold, government bonds, etc. In theOctober 2009 Credit Policy, RBI had hikedthe SLR by 100 basis points - from 24 to 25

    per cent. It has not been touched by RBI inthe Annual Monetary Policy 2010-11.

    Bank rate: Bank rate has been retained at 6 percent.

    Growth Projection for the Year 2010-11:

    The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has projected India's growth for this fiscal atupward of 8 percent, against 7.2 percent as

    per the earlier projection , while the annualrate of inflation at the end of March 2011 is

    projected at 5.5 pe
