PM Addressed 6th Eastern Economic Forum

Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually addressed the plenary

session of the 6th Eastern Economic Forum i.e. the 2021

edition of EEF, which was held in Vladivostok, Russia.

The main theme for the EEF 2021 is: ‘Opportunities for

the Far East in a World under Transformation’.

Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas and Housing and Urban

Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri participated in the EEF.

ONGC Videsh Ltd (OVL), the overseas arm of Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC), and the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC),

signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Russia’s Gazprom for cooperation in the hydrocarbon sector.

The MoU was signed at the 6th EEF.

visit to Slovenia Croatia and

Denmark to review the bilateral

relationship and strengthen India’s

participate in the panel discussion on ‘Partnership for a Rules-Based Order in the Indo- Pacific’.

• India was the only Asian country and one of 3 non-European countries along with the USA and Kenya to be

invited for the 2021 BSF.

• Slovenia currently holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

• EAM visited Denmark and co-chaired the 4th round of the Indo-Danish Joint Commission Meeting (JCM)

along with Jeppe Kofod, Foreign Minister of Denmark.

• Life Insurance Corporation of India has picked up around 3.9% stakes of Bank of India

• With this acquisition the stake of LIC in Bank

of India has increased from 3.17% to 7.05%

• According to the SEBI regulations, on

substantial acquisition of shares and

takeovers, companies have to inform the

stock exchange when the entity holds more

than 5% shares of a listed firm.

• LIC, ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Company

and Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance Company are

the three investors which subscribed to more than 5% of the equity offered in the qualified institutional

placement issue.

Sand and Dust Storms Risk Assessment in Asia and the Pacific

• The Asian and Pacific Centre for the Development of Disaster Information Management, the regional institution of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific has released the report on sand and dust storms named ‘Sand and Dust Storms Risk Assessment in Asia and the Pacific’.

• As per the risk assessments of the report, more than 500 million people in India are exposed to

medium and high levels of poor air quality due to sand and dust storms.

• India has 1,584 gigawatt-hours (GWh) energy loss in 2019, in economic terms, the impact is greater than USD 107 million a year.

• Around 60 million people from the cities of Karachi (Pakistan), Lahore (Pakistan), and Delhi have experienced more than 170 dusty days a year in 2019 due to sand and dust storms.

• More than 80 percent of the populations of Turkmenistan, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Iran are exposed to medium and high levels of poor air quality due to sand and dust storms.

• 6 million residents of 8 cities (3 in China, 2 in the Islamic Republic of Iran, 2 in Pakistan, and 1 in Uzbekistan) across the Asia Pacific region were breathing air with unhealthy concentrations of particulate matter every day for at least 10 months in 2019.

Behler Turtle Conservation Award 2021

• Indian biologist Shailendra Singh has conferred with 2021 Behler Turtle Conservation Award also known

as ‘’Nobel Prize for Turtle Conservation” for bringing

three critically endangered turtle conservation

species back from the edge of extinction.

Shailendra Singh has been named to lead the Turtle

Survival Alliance (TSA)/Wildlife Conservation Society

(WCS) India Turtle programme.

There are 29 species of freshwater turtles and

tortoises in the country.

He was awarded for bringing three critically

endangered turtle conservation species back from the brink of extinction.

• These species are red-crowned roofed turtle (Batagur kachuga), northern river terrapin (Batagur baska), and

black softshell turtle (Nilssonia nigricans).

• The Northern River Terrapin (Batagur baska) is being conserved at the Sunderbans.

• The Red-crowned Roofed Turtle (Batagur kachuga) of Chambal River region.

• The Black Softshell Turtle (Nilssonia nigricans) at different temples in Assam.

• The KURMA app was launched by the government for the conservation of turtles in India

Defence News India finalises deal to procure over AK-203 assault rifles from Russia

• India finalised deal with Russia for the purchase

of around 70,000 AK-203 assault rifles to

replace the existing Indian Small Arms System

assault rifle.

• This comes as a result of the Inter-

Governmental Agreement signed between India

& Russia to manufacture rifles, where a joint

venture called Indo-Russian Rifles Private

Limited (IRRPL) was formed with 50.5% of the

company owned by Ordnance Factory Board of India and the rest belongs to Rosoboron Exports and

Kalashnikov of Russia.IRRPL was set up at Korwa in Uttar Pradesh.

United Shipbuilding Corporation of Russia confirmed that the delivery of first Krivak or Talwar Class

stealth frigate to India by the mid of 2023

In 2016, India and Russia signed an agreement for

The two will be procured directly from Russia while

the other 2 will be built in Goa Shipyard Limited
