Initially funded by a grant from The Bernard Osher Foundation, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UM (MOLLI) is a lifelong learning program for adult learners +50. MOLLI’s goal is to create an accessible and innovative learning environment so that active older adults from all backgrounds and levels of education may pursue learning. MOLLI builds on the rich resources of the University of Montana (UM) to offer its members an array of educational and social opportunities. As a MOLLI member, you have the opportunity to:

Welcome to MOLLI Welcome to the Winter 2015 MOLLI term. It has been a fantastic year so far. We are excited to celebrate another new enrollment record with 930 registrations this Fall term as well as 738 members, another record for memberships for this time of year. Thank you all for your continued support of this program.

We frequently get asked about the history of the MOLLI program and how it first got started. Although many people have played a role in its success and how it has been shaped over the years, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute of the University of Montana (affectionately known as MOLLI) was first started in 2005. President George Dennison had read about other Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes and asked Sharon Alexander who was dean of Continuing Education (now the School of Extended & Lifelong Learning) how we could establish an institute at the University of Montana. At the same time, Rustem Medora, a professor in the School of Pharmacy had heard about them too. An initial small committee was formed that included Daniel Kemmis, Rustem Medora, Herbert Swick, Sue Talbot, and Dean Sharon Alexander. This team laid the groundwork of the program and together they wrote by-laws, formed the MOLLI Council and its various committees, and began to implement their vision of what MOLLI would be. In Fall 2005, MOLLI had two “appetizer” lectures presented by Rafael Chacón and Mehrdad Kia. In January of 2006, five classes were offered taught by William Bevis, David Emmons, Esther England, Tom Huff, and Mark Johnson.

The program was a success and continued to grow as a result. The Bernard Osher Foundation gave our program a $100,000 grant in 2006, another $100,000 grant in 2007, and then another in 2008. In 2009, MOLLI received a $1 million endowment. The important stipulation was that we become not only successful but sustainable. As you can see, we are certainly successful and we have been working hard to ensure the program’s current and future growth and sustainability. We have been attaining our goal with your help. We are successful because of you… because you love learning, because you are curious, and because you are open minded to new ideas and challenges.

Over these years, we have had over 50 individuals who have served on the Council and various committees. We invite you to become more involved if you desire to do so. Please give us a call. We encourage your ideas as well as your continued support and participation.

Together we have built a great community program for the benefit of all. We thank you.

• Staying Green But Changing MethodsLastyear,MOLLImadeamove tobecomemoresustainableandmodifiedhowstudents receive theircoursehandouts.Inaccordancewiththischange,theMOLLIofficenowfurnishesanyhandoutsthataredistributedonthefirstdayofaclassandalsoprovideseachstudentwithdirectionshowtoaccessanyadditionalcoursematerialsonline.Studentscanchoosetoreadtheircoursematerialsonlineand/orprintthemaccordingtotheirownneeds.Notonlydoesthischangemakethecoursematerialsmoreaccessibletothosethatusescreenreadersorneedfontsizeadjustments,butasaresultoftheseefforts,weareproudtosaythattheMOLLIofficeiscelebratingourprogresstowardsagreener,moresustainableprogram-weproducedonly28,281blackandwhitecopiesinthe2013-14membershipyearincontrastto87,553blackandwhitecopiesinthepreviousmembershipyear–thatis59,272lesspagesofpaperandasavingsof$3,556.32 to the program.

Previously, students had been able to access these course materials online via the Mike and Maureen Mansfield Library’s eReserve system; as of this fall, this system is no longer in place at UM. In October, MOLLIstudentswereintroducedtoMoodle,anonlinelearningplatformthatprovidesstudentswiththeopportunitytoviewordownloaddocuments,articles,weblinks,readings,photos,andmuchmore.Asalways,theMOLLIofficeispleasedtoofferone-on-onetrainingforanyinterestedpersonstowalkthroughthisnewprocess.
