While the company is indeed making changes at some of its stations, Cumulus corporate programmer Charlie Cook takes exception to characterizing this as a company-wide mandate. “Calling this a Cumulus ‘music policy’ is too strong,” he says. “We in Atlanta (home of Cumulus’ corporate office) operate as ‘customer service’ for the stations. We spend a great deal of time and effort with local research, but we have the ability to see all of that research globally here in the corporate office. If we see the same thing market after market, we address it in a more broad fashion. Basically, we found that we were playing too much unfamiliar music. That’s all we have here.” Cook does acknowledge that the amount of current music is being scaled back at some stations, although he dismisses the notion that the move is any kind of across- the-board policy. “I would be careful categorizing this as a dictate that does not take into account the individual station’s needs,” he cautions. “There are some markets that have been playing more current music than they needed to in order to maximize the cume that was coming into the station, and these adjustments were obvious to chart watchers. We hope that the more familiar music will also be obvious to the listener. “Cumulus is still very much about what is appropriate for local markets. Are there markets that need to be something a little different? Are there markets that because of competitive considerations don’t look like sister stations? Sure. This is not McDonald’s where every box of fries tastes the same from market to market.” More than one Cumulus Country programmer has told Country Aircheck that their list would be evolving to nine heavies and seven mediums. Despite that, Cook says, “Sixteen is not a magic number. In fact, we will play more than that almost everywhere because there will be a lighter category that often plays outside of mornings and afternoons. “And I can guarantee you that there is not a ‘golden list’ that every station must play. That would be foolish. “Dallas and Indianapolis have different targets and different needs,” Cook continues. “Do I try and facilitate music discussions between [KPLX/The Wolf]/Dallas PD] John Cook and [WFMS/Indianapolis PD] Bob Richards? You bet. These guys, along with being infinitely smarter than me, are certainly more attuned to their local markets.” Cumulus Cuts Currents ISSUE FOUR MUSIC EDITION SEPTEMBER 11, 2006

Hot Air CountryAircheck has gotten wind that KennyChesney and BrooksandDunnwill team for a series of Stadium shows. While there’s no word on other acts, we do hear that the Kenny, Kix and Ronnie are already scheming to produce a rockin’ 20-minute close for the show. By the way, word also has it the Chesney will be featured in an upcoming edition of 60 Minutes. A reporter from the show was spotted on the road at a recent Chesney concert date. In fact, the intrepid journalist crammed alongside Chesney into the equipment case Kenny uses to make his concert entrance every night. Look for the profile to air on Nov. 5 -- the night before the CMA Awards.

Aircheck Chat Congrats to Curb Sr. VP/Promotion CarsonJames, VP AprilRider-Helm and their entire team of EricMellencamp,KarenMcGuire,RickRockhill,RoccoCosco,JoeO’Donnell and JillGleason. They’ve been on quite a roll recently, spending three of the last six weeks at No. 1. RodneyAtkins was on top a couple weeks (8/7 and 8/14) with “If You’re Going Through Hell…” while SteveHoly sits atop this week’s CountryAircheck chart with “Brand New Girlfriend.” And, talk about a study in perseverance and belief in your artists: Holy’s last No. 1 came at the beginning of 2002 when “Good Morning Beautiful” spent five weeks at No.1. Atkin’s previous biggest hit came in late 2003, when “Honesty (Write Me A

List)” peaked in the Top 10. Kudos, too, to WB/Nashville’s GatorMichaels,JimMalito and their entire promo team on TheWreckers’ “Leave The Pieces.” MichelleBranch and JessicaHarp’s single topped the CountryAircheck charts for three consecutive weeks (8/21, 8/28 and 9/5).
