MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL ROMERO

The spring brings great leaps in learning. I have seen such

growth from our students. Teachers have been helping stu-

dents create learning goals. Students are taking on more own-

ership for their learning.

The spring also brings social conflict. It is common to see con-

flict among students as they learn to communicate. Allow con-

flict is typical, what we will not tolerate is bullying. Please see

the attached article regarding bullying.

Over the next couple of month our social emotional learning will

focus on preventing bullying. We want students to stand up

against bullying in a positive way. We want them to develop

their self confidence and resiliency. The PTA will be sponsoring

an anti-bully assembly in May. We will have a puppet show for

the younger kids. The counselor and I will deliver lessons to stu-

dents regarding our expectations.

There have been instances that have not been reported to staff.

We are working on ways to help kids report. Parents, please

continue to call the office and report any concern your student

shares with you. We really want kids to feel safe and heard.

What is bullying? Bullying is an ongoing and deliberate misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal, physical and/or social behaviour that intends to cause physical, social and/or psychological harm. It can involve an individu-al or a group misusing their power, or perceived power, over one or more persons who feel unable to stop it from happening.

Bullying can happen in person or online, via various digital platforms and devices and it can be obvious (overt) or hidden (covert). Bullying behaviour is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time (for example, through sharing of digital records).

Bullying of any form or for any reason can have immediate, medium and long-term effects on those involved, including bystanders.

Single incidents and conflict or fights between equals, whether in person or online, are not defined as bullying.

What bullying is not

single episodes of social rejection or dislike

single episode acts of nastiness or spite

random acts of aggression or intimidation

mutual arguments, disagreements or fights.

These actions can cause great distress. However, they do not fit the definition of bullying and they’re not examples of bullying unless someone is deliberately and repeatedly doing them.

What are the results of bullying?

The effects of bullying involve both the bully and the victim. Youth who are bullied are more likely to suffer from the follow-ing:

Depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and thoughts of suicide

Health issues like headaches, sleep problems, abdominal pain, bed-wedding, and fatigue

Academic issues including poor attendance, low test scores, and increased dropout rates

Take a stand against bullying. On Wednesday, 3/4 we will be giving stu-

dents purple and orange yarn to use as laces. We would like for them to

wear them as long as they can. On Friday the 6th, staff will wear purple

and orange clothing. If possible please have your stu-

dent wear purple and orange on Friday to make a stand

against bullying.
