How to Survive in a Russian Household
Dining
• Before meals• Arrive on time, no more than 15
minutes later than invited
• Remove outdoor shoes, you may be given slippers to wear
• Dress well, clothes that you might wear to the office, dressing well shows respect for your host
• Expect to be treated with respect and honor
• Offer help to the hostess with the preparation or clearing when the
meal is served
• During meals• Table Manners are necessary, the
fork is held in the left hand and the knife in the right hand while eating
• The oldest or most honored guest is served first
• Do not begin eating until the host invites you to eat
• Second helpings are urged
• Let men pour drinks for women next to them
• Do not get up until you are invited to leave the table
Gift Giving Etiquette
• Families and friends give gifts on birthdays, New Year, and Orthodox Christmas
• If you are invited to dinner or meal, bring a small gift
• Male guests bring flowers
• Do not give yellow flowers
• Do not give gifts to a baby until after the baby is born. It is bad luck to do so sooner
• Russians often protest against gifts out of politeness, but if you offer the gift again afterwards, it will usually be accepted

• Shchi – a type of soup made of cabbage
