people in my village.The crops here are rice, tobacco,

and peanuts. There are big orchards where people grow

Rubber and Eucalyptus trees.There are also pig, duck, and

chicken farms.Fishing is a big industry in Huay Yang too.

There is a big fresh water reservoir with many kinds of fish.

Villagers are very good at weaving Thai silk andmaking

5.1Interesting Places

Ban Huay Yang Village is located in Sakon Nakhon Province in the

North Eastern part of Thailand.

It has many interesting and historical places.

There are several beautiful waterfalls in the Phu Phan

Mountains that border Sakon Nakhon Province.

There is also a famous temple cave, Tam Pakae high in the mountains.

You cannot take a car up, you must walk up 3 kilometers to get there.

If you walk up the mountain you will find many large statues of Buddha hidden in

the forest. There are also small ancient stone

statues up in the mountains hundreds of years old.

At the bottom of the mountains there are two

large water reservoirs.A mermaid watches over the reservoir and protects its

people.The reservoir is good for fishing and recreational activities.

5.2 Culture and Festivals

Ban Huay Yang Village has many unique and special traditions.

My favorite day of the year is New Year’s Day or Song Kran.

During the Song Kran festival all our relatives come to visit.

I like to play with the water on the streets with my friends.

On this day my family always goes to the temple and

then has a party in our home.

Another very important holiday is Loy Kratong Day.

Every full moon in the twelfth month of the Thai calendar year

my village meets and sends candle floats down the river.

My village also has special local Isaan foods.

Some foods that are well known for my area are Papaya salad, Bamboo

soup, and meat salad.

6 green Thai chilies

2 tomatoes, cut into wedges

1/2 cup chopped green beans

2 tablespoons anchovy sauce

1/2 teaspoon fish sauce

1/4 cup (2 fl oz/60 ml) lime juice or tamarind juice

How to Make Papaya Salad:

1. Peel and wash the papaya.

2. Take out the seeds from the papaya.

3. Shred the papaya.

4. Place garlic and chilly in a mortar and mash with a pestle.

5. Add papaya, green beans, tomatoes, sauces, and lime juice.

6. Mix all ingredients.

7. Put on a plate.

How to Make Bamboo Soup:

1. Boil the bamboo shoots

2. Place garlic, chili, yanang leaf

and rice powder in a mortar and

mash with a pestle.

3. Place garlic, chili and rice

powder in a pot of boiling water

4. Add bamboo shoots, and the

rest of the ingredients.

5. Cook for 20 minutes

6. Serve with sticky rice

7. Serve with cabbage and sticky rice
