Stretch & Strength

Boomer FitnessResearch shows great benefits for adults from weight lifting. This is especially relevant for adults of the ‘Boomer’ generation as muscle size and strength declines rapidly after 55 years causing loss of functional capacity. As we age, the body’s ability to construct new protein slows and our body begins to break down faster than it can rebuild itself. Consequently, we lose muscle tissue and gain body fat. A proper resistance-training program can prevent the lean tissue declines seen in sedentary individuals. Some muscle tissue and strength loss can be reversed in a very short period. Weight lifting builds muscle and strength safely, and improves movement ability. If you are a Boomer, this course is for you, combining lectures with exercise sessions. The objective is to teach you how to lift weights effectively and safely in a fitness club or at home. NOTE: Each session includes 1 hour lecture and 1 hour exercise.

Fifties Plus FitnessThis program is for people 50 years of age or older. The two 90-minute land classes include a thorough warm-up and stretch, cardiovascular activity, all-important strengthening exercises and a relaxing cool-down. There is one 60-minute session in the pool (shallow water). The objective of this class is to build and maintain physical vigour safely and enjoyably.

A Heart Wise Exercise Program

Heart Wise programs are intended for participants who are interested or concerned about their heart health. Heart Wise programs meet the

following criteria: This project is supported by the Government of Ontario

• encourages regular, daily aerobic exercise• incorporates and encourages warm up, cool down and self-monitoring with all exercise sessions• allows participants to exercise at low intensity, and has progressive options to increase intensity

if appropriate• accepts participants with a known history of cardiac disease – provided they have physician

approval• provides health screening for all participants• has an emergency plan that is documented and known to all exercise leaders, including current

CPR certification, phone access to Emergency Medical Services and presence of an Automatic External Defibrillator

Stretch and Strength for Mature AdultsThis class features a series of exercises for all major muscle groups using dumbbells and Dyna-bands, sandwiched between a warm-up stretch and a cool-down. Zumba GoldZumba Gold targets the largest growing segment of the population: baby boomers. It takes the Zumba formula and modifies the moves and pacing to suit the needs of the active Boomer, as well as those just starting their journey to a fit and healthy lifestyle. What stays the same are all the elements the Zumba Fitness-Party is known for: the zesty Latin music, like salsa, merengue, cumbia and reggaeton; the exhilarat-ing, easy-to-follow moves; and the invigorating, party-like atmosphere. If you are looking for camaraderie, excitement and fitness as a regular part of your weekly schedule, Zumba Gold is the perfect fit. It’s a dance-fitness class that feels friendly, and most of all, fun.

AikidoAikido is a modern, non-aggressive Japanese martial art developed in the early part of the 20th century and is both a method of self-defense and a spiritual discipline. The essence of Aikido techniques are graceful spherical motions that can be used to re-direct an attackers energy. Aikido techniques use centripetal forces, leveraging of joints, and movement rather than brute strength and muscle power. Aikido promotes a high degree of cooperation between partners rather than competition. Some of the basic techniques that you will learn are ‘ukemi’ or ‘the Art of Falling’ and ‘nage waza’ a basic structured set of throws and controls. Physical strength is unimportant and therefore the art is open to both men and women of all ages and fitness levels.

Beginner GrapplingGrappling has long since proved its value in combat sport arenas and should be considered a necessary aspect of self-defense training. This class will start building the student’s grappling foundation by teaching a core of techniques drawn from both Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Submission Wrestling. The course material will include joint locks, chokes and control positions as well techniques for getting opponents to the ground and how to fall properly. In addition we’ll be covering some basic stretching and exercise routines in order to enhance the student’s ability to perform the techniques being taught and to help keep our training safe. Classes will be tough but everyone is encouraged to workout at their own pace and ask questions whenever necessary. This class is best suited for those with little or no grappling experience; however, those with prior training who are looking for a review are more than welcome. I hope to see you on the mats.
