    Preface

    This manual is designed to assist Bull customers in planning and preparing the sitefor installation of a CTLD021 Subsystem. Note that CTLD021 is the M.I.(commercial name) for CTL 9740 and CTCD001 the M.I. for CTS 9490. Bothnames are used in this manual.

    To help achieve an efficient system installation, the procedures, designrequirements, and recommendations in this manual should be observed. Asuccessful subsystem installation also depends on how individual responsibilitiesare allocated and how overall planning and follow-up work are performed.

    A technical publication remarks form is provided at the end of this manual for useby the customer to notify Bull or errors in the manual, or to offer suggestions for itsimprovement.

    1. Before you start

    1.1 General information

    The StorageTek® 9740 Library (part of Timberwolf family) is a derived fromCTL 9710 already introduced in Bull's catalogue, it is a fully automated cartridgestorage and retrieval subsystem. It is already proposed by GCOS8 Product Line,and will be proposed by GCOS7 as new offer in conjunction with StorageTek 9490(Timberline) Cartridge Subsystem. It uses both the Enhanced Capacity cartridgetape (E-Cartridge, also known as E-Tape) and standard length cartridges used in18-track and 36-track cartridge subsystem as the storage medium. In thisdocument, you will find only information relative to library connection to theDPS 7000.

    1.2 Introduction

    The installation of any computer implies the planning, initiation, and execution ofmany tasks. In addition to the tasks of general organization, programming andeducation, those concerning the preparation of the computer room (or site) and itsenvironment are to be considered.

    There are three principal categories of environmental work to be undertaken. Theyrelate to:

    • the building

    • the power supply

    • the air conditioning for the computer

    The purpose of this manual is to treat these problems by describing the technicalconsiderations necessary for a successful and efficient installation of the BullCTLD021 Library Subsystem.

    Throughout all phases of planning, site preparation and installation your Bull SitePreparation representatives will help you to interpret this manual and give thebenefit of their experience.

    1.3 Computer Room Requirements

    Refer to the Site Preparation Guide relevant to your host system.

    The data-processing environment needs to provide optimal operating conditions.General information concerning the physical characteristics of the building, airconditioning and the electrical installation are described in the General Guide toData Processing Site Preparation which is available on-line via the Web.

    1.4 Planning

    A successful installation requires careful consideration during the planning phase,and close supervision during the execution phase of site preparation. It is yourresponsibility as the customer to ensure that the site will be ready to receive thesystem at least one week before delivery.

    If the system is to be installed in an existing site, the schedule will depend largelyon the extent of the modifications necessary to meet the system requirements. Ifany doubts exist regarding the suitability of existing facilities, your Bull SitePreparation Representatives will examine the current site, and recommend thenecessary modifications for the installation.

    To help you with planning, the Bull Site Preparation and Maintenancerepresentatives have well-established planning procedures which can be tailored toparticular requirements. As no two installations are alike, no exact schedule can begiven here. However, the following recommendations will act as a rough guide tothe sequence and timing of major events.

    13 Weeks Before Delivery

    Approve layout plans of computer site, the surrounding areas and the equipment inthe computer room. Draw up specifications, and invite tenders for contracts.

    11 Weeks Before Delivery

    Review tenders and award contracts. Site meeting of selected contractors, Bullrepresentatives and outside consultants.

    9 Weeks Before Delivery

    Place all orders for equipment and necessary furnishings. Establish a working planfor the modifications to be performed.

    8 Weeks Before Delivery

    Complete all structural modifications, rewiring and installation of the airconditioning. Check that corridor, door and window widths conform tospecifications.

    6 Weeks Before Delivery

    Install raised floor and suspended ceiling (where applicable). Check floor loading.

    5 Weeks Before Delivery

    Decorate and thoroughly clean the computer room. Commission the electrical andair conditioning equipment.

    NOTE:Air balancing of the air conditioning system should be performed by airbalancing specialists. Do this as soon as possible after the system installationhas been completed.

    Install any auxiliary equipment, such as terminals, modems, and so on. Ensure thatthey are operating correctly.

    2 Weeks Before Delivery

    Bull Site Preparation and Maintenance representatives will specify "preparationcomplete".

    1 Week Before Delivery

    All work completed and the computer room thoroughly cleaned. Air conditioningand electrical plant test-run during this period. Use the shipping information in theproduct specific documentation to determine the "delivery trail", and check thatthis is obstacle-free. Procure any special materials and equipment needed fordelivery.

    2. The Computer site

    The precise details of the computer site where you install yourCTLD021/CTCD001 library subsystem depend on the connection architecture youhave chosen. The following sections describe the ACSLS connection architecture.

    In ACSLS connection architecture you will be installing the library subsystem onthe same computer site as an existing DPS 7000 installation. For generalinstallation details, refer to the site preparation documentation for the DPS 7000installation as indicated in the Site Preparation Manual Reference Table. Specificsite preparation details for this connection architecture are given in "CTLD021 andCTCD001 Specifics".

    • Connection of CTS 9490 Drives to DPS 7000 through WSP Controller will bedone by SCSI interface (either 10 m or 20 m long cable).

    • Connection of ACSLS Server to DPS 7000 will use Ethernet Network interface.

    3. CTLD021 and CTCD001 Specifics

    This chapter helps you to prepare your existing site for the installation andconnection of the CTLD021/CTCD001 library subsystem. The existing site canrange from an operational DPS 7000 installation in the case of the ACSLSarchitecture.

    3.1 Physical Specifications

    3.2 Electrical and Power Requirements

    3.2.1 Power Consumption

    The library subsystem has a single power supply.

    The CTLD021 is supplied with appropriate cable ends (56/60 Hz AC cords).

    The individual CTCD001 cabinet is supplied with appropriate cable ends(56/60 Hz AC cords).

    The quick reference table shows power consumption for different configurations.

    3.5 Relative Positions of Machines

    Within you computer site the actual position of the library subsystem will bedictated by physical space restrictions. The available cable lengths for connectionsbetween machines imposes additional restrictions on the relative positions ofmachines.

    The logic cables for connecting up the CTLD021 are only available in thefollowing lengths:

    Connection Cable Length

    DPS 7000 to Cabinet Drive Subsystem 10m or 20m

    UNIX Server to Library Subsystem 30m (100 feet)

    The power cable for the CTLD021 is 3 m long.

    Cabinet Drive Subsystem 3m (10 feet)

    NOTE:If you have a false floor, remember to allow 50 cm for the drop of the powercable, and 1m for the combined drop and ascent of a logic cable. If you do nothave a false floor, 20 cm and 40 cm are respectively sufficient.
