Just Who Is “The SP Student?”

The guy portrayed in the SP website or the galworking as part-time model after her class? What do they think about education in SP?

Page 6: CT Online Assignment

This is ‘Ashley’, they say she is a GEN Z kid. Is your student like her?

Shaping the Future

How much do we need to understand about our students to order to engage them in our classrooms?

Page 9: CT Online Assignment

The Big Question

• The rising importance of learning in the classroom.

• Are students really our customers?

• What does this mean for us as educators as we design learning experiences for our students?

• Let’s start our detective work now...

1. Conduct interview(s) to gather insights of a SP STUDENT persona through various mediums

• Select any student(s) in SP and create a SP STUDENT persona through interviews, observations, photos, film, etc. The more mediums the merrier

• Cast away all pre-conceptions you might have of your students and listen with a open mind. Ask questions which you have always wanted to ask but never had a chance to.

• Seek students' permission to snap pictures of them and their stuffs. Inform them that it’s for education research. You do not need to name your student.

More suggestions...in areas of learning:• Which learning activity do you prefer most - lectures, tutorials,

workshop/lab/studio? Why? You may also ask students to rank them and explain their ranking.

• Do you have a favourite lecturer? If yes, describe him/her.• What matters most to you in life?• What motivates you to study?• What’s with the hot shorts and slippers? Fashion statement?• Why are our students always late for class? Is there any way to

change that?• Do you prefer group work or individual work?• If you have a magic wand and can change the way learning takes

place in SP, what would it be like?• Etc.

1. Conduct interview(s) to gather insights of a SP STUDENT persona through various mediums

Page 13: CT Online Assignment

• Take down notes on their answers, thoughts, feelings, etc. Take pictures of any interesting items that they own and find out their rationale behind those items.

• While it's easy to speak to "good" students, take the chance to chat up a seemingly "bad student“.

• Previous batch of CT participants have chatted with the smoking ones at the bus-stop, students who look like rockers, students who did not seemed to be interested in their studies and they had gathered some interesting insights.

Page 14: CT Online Assignment

• Collate, summarise your data and prepare a 1/2 page reflection on your study of THE SP STUDENT for your digital story.

• Your reflection can be based on (but not limited) to the following:– Your thoughts while talking to the student– What strikes you the most? – Are your students like “Ashley”? – Do you have a better understanding of our student now? – How does knowing them impact the way you design and

deliver your lessons?– Etc.

2. Reflect on insights gathered

3. Present your SP STUDENT Persona in a Digital Storytelling Format

• First, let’s look at the definition of Digital Storytelling.

• “Digital Storytelling is the practice of using computer-based tools to tell stories. Digital stories usually contain some mixture of computer-based images, text, recorded audio narration, video clips and/or music.

• Topics that are used in Digital Storytelling range from personal tales to the recounting of historical events, from exploring life in one's own community to the search for life in other corners of the universe, and literally, everything in between.“ –
