Architectural Survey File
This is the architectural survey file for this MIHP record. The survey file is organized reverse-
chronological (that is, with the latest material on top). It contains all MIHP inventory forms, National
Register nomination forms, determinations of eligibility (DOE) forms, and accompanying documentation
such as photographs and maps.
Users should be aware that additional undigitized material about this property may be found in on-site
architectural reports, copies of HABS/HAER or other documentation, drawings, and the “vertical files” at
the MHT Library in Crownsville. The vertical files may include newspaper clippings, field notes, draft
versions of forms and architectural reports, photographs, maps, and drawings. Researchers who need a
thorough understanding of this property should plan to visit the MHT Library as part of their research
project; look at the MHT web site (mht.maryland.gov) for details about how to make an appointment.
All material is property of the Maryland Historical Trust.

CAPSULE SUMMARY CT-895 Lore Tenement #1 175 Langley Lane Solomons, Calvert County ca.1942 Private
The tenement house at 175 Langley Lane is one of two domestic buildings erected along South Solomons Island
Road to meet the growing housing needs of Solomons Island during the second quarter of the twentieth century.
Local oral history contends the two houses provided living space for four to eight civilian workers and servicemen
stationed at the Naval Amphibious Training Base (NATB) in Solomons and at the Patuxent River Naval Air Station
in St. Mary's County. Activated in the summer of 1942, the NATB was one of several installations established
during World War II to train soldiers for offensive amphibious maneuvers such as that executed in Normandy on D-
Day (June 6, 1944). The NATB, although short-lived, and the Patuxent River Naval Air Station both had a profound
impact on the surrounding community of Solomons, and redefined the character of the rural community. Erected
about 1942, the tenement houses at 175 Langley Lane and 14256 South Solomons Island Road (CT-896) are
excellent examples of the mass-produced adaptation of the bungalow to meet growing housing demands during the
World War II years. The houses were constructed for Kenneth Lore as rental property.
This modest wood-frame dwelling, originally identical in form and ornamentation to its Craftsman-style counterpart
at 14256 South Solomons Island Road, has been altered by the application of modern materials and Colonial
Revival-style elements. Standing one-and-a-half-stories high, the building is four bays wide; originally it was three
bays wide with a central entry. A one-bay-wide addition was added to the east elevation sometime between 1986
and 2004. The structure is clad with vinyl siding, and has a side-gable roof sheathed in asphalt shingles. The
slightly overhanging eaves have a boxed cornice that has been covered with vinyl siding. The replacement front-
gabled portico, one-bay wide, is supported by turned wood posts. The tympanum of the portico is clad with vinyl
siding. The facade fenestration is comprised of paired 1/1 vinyl-sash windows, with square-edged vinyl surrounds.
Originally, the window openings held 6/1 wood-sash. The renovations to the house took place between 1986 and
2004 as documented by a September 1986 photograph and the June 1988 MIHP form.
