    Instructions for TRICON Maintenance Diagnostics

    2001 Triconex Corporation Effective April 25, 2001 Part Number 9600005-003 R2

In the event that a TRICON system componentfaults or reports field-related alarms, Triconexprovides the following diagnostic utility programsto assist customers in obtaining information fromthe TRICON to aid in diagnosing the problem. These are: DIAGREAD, TSTOOLS andCollect TRILOG Events.

The first utility, DIAGREAD, is a DOS-basedmaintenance utility used to collect historical datasaved in the Main Processors battery-backedRAM memory. This program can used with V5to V9 TRICON systems. The historical data iscompiled into specific file formats whichDIAGREAD knows how to collect and save tothe PCs hard disk in a ASCII-based file formatby using the TRICON History/Statistics cable.

The other utility, TSTOOLS, is a menu-drivenprogram that collects diagnostic eventinformation stored in Communication Modulessuch as EICM, NCM or ACM. This DOS-based program can be used with V7, V8 andV9 TRICON systems and saves the informationin a chronological binary-format file.

Version 9 TriStation 1131-based TRICONsystems provides an embedded diagnostic utilitycalled Collect TRILOG Events. This function isinvoked under the TS1131 Diagnostics Panelcollecting historical events from EICM, NCM orACM Communication modules. Thisfunctionality is available for TriStation 1131version 1.1 or later only. The historical eventsretrieved by Collect TRILOG Events are savedin the PCs hard disk in a sequential binary-based file.

All these diagnostic utilities provide menu-drivenand option-selection instructions that allow theuser to perform data collection in a simplisticmethod. The execution of these diagnosticutilities can be done with the TRICON systemon-line without affecting the controlled process.

The diagnostic files collected by these variousutilities present various snapshots of historicalevents, such as the following:

One Main Processors view of system healthwith respect to the other two MainProcessors views.

Particular events which have occurred withinthe last 24-hour period.

The latest occurrence of a certain type ofevent example, power loss; the removal ofa module from the chassis; or the last stateof the TRICON systems keyswitch.

To ensure a complete analysis of a TRICONsystem, it is advisable that as a minimumDIAGREAD and a Collect Event utilities beperformed. It is also recommended thatdiagnostic files should be obtained prior toremoving the faulted module from the systemand within 24 hours of the occurrence. Uponexecution of DIAGREAD and any of theCollect Events utilities, fault historicalevent data will be cleared from the memoryallowing new historical events be stored.
