INTRODUCTION
TheCommissiononDieteticRegistration(CDR),thecredentialingagencyfortheAcademyofNutrition
andDietetics, is responsible for thedevelopment andadministrationof the interdisciplinaryspecialist
certificationinobesityandweightmanagement.Inaddition,CDRoffersspecialistboardcertificationinthe
areasofgerontologicalnutrition,oncologynutrition,pediatricnutrition,pediatriccriticalcarenutrition,
renalnutrition,andsportsdieteticsforqualifiedindividuals.CDRspecialistboardcertificationisgranted
in recognition of the applicant’s documented practice experience and successful completion of a
computerizedexaminationinthespecialtyarea.TheinterdisciplinaryBoardCertifiedSpecialistinObesity
andWeightManagement(CSOWM)examinationconsistsof150multiple-choicequestions.Candidates
will have3hours to complete theexam. ItisessentialthatyoukeepthisCandidateHandbook readily
available for referenceuntilyouhavesuccessfullycompleted theexamination.Youareresponsiblefor
knowingitscontents.
CSOWMPRACTITIONERDEFINITIONHealth professionalswho educate, support, and advocate for patients and clients to understand and
manage their weight and associated risks through the use of nutritional, behavioral health, medical,
surgical,pharmacotherapeutic,andexerciseandphysicalactivityinterventions.
TESTINGAGENCYPSIServices iscurrently theprofessional testingagencyretainedbyCDRtoassist in thedevelopment,
administration,scoring,andanalysisofthisspecialtyexamination.PSIisaresearchanddevelopmentfirm
that conducts professional competency assessment research and provides examination services for
severalhealthpractitionercredentialingprograms.
STATEMENTOFNONDISCRIMINATIONCDRandPSIdonotdiscriminateamongcandidatesonthebasisofrace,color,creed,gender,religion,
nationalorigin,disabilityormaritalstatus.
CONFIDENTIALITYInformationaboutcandidatesfortestingandtheirexaminationresultsareconsideredconfidential.Test
questiondraftsandothermaterialsusedtocreateexaminationquestions(exceptfortestcontentoutlines
orreferencelists)aresecureandconfidential.Allsuchmaterialsshallbekeptinsecure,lockedstorage,
accessibleonlybyauthorizedpersonnel,andnotdisclosedtoorsharedwithothers.Allquestionswritten
andmaterialsdevelopedforquestionsareconsidereda“workforhire,”andremainthepropertyofCDR.
Questionwritersarenotallowedtoconduct“reviewcourses”orotherprogramsdesignedtoprepare
candidatestotakeaCDRSpecialtyexamination.Studiesandreportsconcerningcandidateswillcontain
noinformationidentifiablewithanycandidate,unlessauthorizedbythecandidate.
CDRasksthateachpractitionerworktomaintaintheintegrityoftheCSOWMexaminationsothatwemay
continuetoprovideaqualitycertification—onethathighlightstheCSOWMastheboard-certifiedexpert
inobesityandweightmanagement.Thus,itimportanttonotdiscusstheexaminationcontent,questions
andstudyresources.Eachtimeexaminationcontentisdiscussed,theexamiscompromisedandthereis
significant loss, not only in fiscal terms (cost of test development), but also in themany hours spent
creating,reviewing,editingandcompilingstatisticsforexaminationquestions.Discussingtheexamination
contentisunethicalandprovidesexamcandidatesanunfairadvantagewhentakingtheexamination.

EXAMINATIONAPPOINTMENTSAfter you have received notification of your eligibility from CDR, you may schedule an examination
appointmentbyoneofthefollowingmethods.Bepreparedtoconfirmadateandlocationfortestingand
toprovideyouruniqueidentificationnumber(beginningwithaY),whichwassentinyoureligibilityemail.

The examinations are administered by appointment onlyMonday through Saturday at various times

Whentheappointmentismade,theapplicantwillbesentanemailprovidingthetimetoreporttothe
TestCenter.Theapplicantwillonlybeallowedtotaketheexaminationforwhichtheappointmenthas
beenmade.NochangesinexaminationtypewillbemadeattheTestCenter.UNSCHEDULEDCANDIDATES

SPECIALARRANGEMENTSFORCANDIDATESWITHDISABILITIESPSI complieswith the Americanswith Disabilities Act and strives to ensure that no individual with a
disabilityisdeprivedoftheopportunitytotaketheexaminationsolelybyreasonofthatdisability.PSIwill
provide reasonable accommodations for candidates with disabilities. Candidates requesting special

INCLEMENTWEATHER,POWERFAILUREOREMERGENCYIn theeventof inclementweatherorunforeseenemergencieson thedayof anexamination, PSIwill
determine whether circumstances warrant the cancellation, and subsequent rescheduling, of an
examination.Theexaminationwillusuallynotbe rescheduled if theAssessmentCenterpersonnelare
abletoopentheAssessmentCenter.
CandidatesmayvisitPSI’swebsiteathttp://online.goamp.compriortotheexaminationtodetermineif
PSI has been advised that any Test Centers are closed. Every attempt is made to administer the
examinationasscheduled;however,shouldanexaminationbecanceledataTestCenter,allscheduled
candidateswillreceivenotificationfollowingtheexaminationregardingreschedulingprocedures.
IfpowertoaTestCenteristemporarilyinterruptedduringanadministration,yourexaminationwillbe
restarted.Theresponsesprovideduptothepointofinterruptionwillbeintact.
EXAMINATIONCONTENTTheexaminationconsistsof150multiple-choicequestions(125questionsscoredquestionsand25pretest
questions),andisconstructedusingapproximatelythenumberofitemsindicatedintheContentOutline.
Pretesting is done to see howwell items perform before they are used in the scored portion of the
examination. The pretest questions cannot be distinguished from those that will be scored, so it is
importantthatallquestionsareansweredtothebestofyourability.Candidateswillhavetochoosethe
bestanswerfromthefouroptionsprovided.Candidateswillhave3hourstocompletetheexamination.
COPYRIGHTEDEXAMINATIONQUESTIONSAllexaminationquestionsarethecopyrightedpropertyofCDR.Itisforbiddenunderfederalcopyrightlaw
tocopy,reproduce,record,distributeordisplaytheseexaminationquestionsbyanymeans,inwholeor
inpart.Doingsomaysubjectyoutoseverecivilandcriminalpenalties.
ONTHEDAYOFYOUREXAMINATION
Onthedayofyourexaminationappointment, report to theTestCenterno later thanyourscheduled
testing time.ACANDIDATEWHOARRIVESMORETHAN15MINUTESAFTERTHESCHEDULEDTESTING
TIMEWILLNOTBEADMITTED.
TogainadmissiontotheTestCenter,acandidateneedstopresenttwoformsofidentification;onemustbe
avalidgovernmentissuedidentificationwithphotograph.Bothformsof identificationmustbecurrent
and includethecandidate’scurrentnameandsignature.Thecandidatewillalsoberequiredtosigna
rosterforverificationofidentity.
Acceptableformsofidentificationincludeacurrent:

EmploymentIDcards,studentIDcardsandanytypeoftemporaryidentificationareNOTacceptableas
primary identification. Candidates are prohibited from misrepresenting their identities or falsifying
informationtoobtainadmissiontotheTestCenter.
SECURITYCDRandPSImaintainexaminationadministrationandsecuritystandardsthataredesignedtoensureall
candidates are provided the same opportunity to demonstrate their abilities. The Test Center is
continuouslymonitoredbyvideosurveillanceequipmentforsecuritypurposes.
Thefollowingsecurityproceduresapplyduringtheexamination:
• Examinationsareproprietary.Nocameras,notes,taperecorders,computers,pagersorcellularphones
areallowedinthetestingroom.Possessionofacellularphoneorotherelectronicdevices isstrictly
prohibitedandwillresultindismissalfromtheexamination.
•Onlysilent,non-programmablecalculatorswithoutalphakeysorprintingcapabilitiesareallowedinthe
testingroom.
• Noguests,visitorsorfamilymembersareallowedinthetestingroomorreceptionareas.
PERSONALBELONGINGSNopersonalitems,valuables,orweaponsshouldbebroughttotheTestCenter.Coatsmustbeleftoutside
thetestingroom.Youwillbeprovidedalockerorsecurefolderstostoreyourbelongingsduringtesting.
Youwillnothaveaccesstotheseitemsuntilaftertheexaminationiscompleted.
Youwillbeaskedtopulloutyourpocketstoensuretheyareempty.Ifanypersonalitemsareobservedin
the testing roomafter theexaminationisstarted,youwillbedismissedand theadministrationwillbe
forfeited.
EXAMINATIONRESTRICTIONS
• Pencilswillbeprovidedduringcheck-in.
• Youwillbeprovidedwithonepieceofscratchpaperatatimetouseduringtheexamination.You
mustreturnthescratchpapertothesupervisoratthecompletionoftesting,oryouwillnotreceive
yourparticipationreport.
• NodocumentsornotesofanykindmayberemovedfromtheTestCenter.
• Noquestionsconcerningthecontentoftheexaminationmaybeaskedduringtheexamination.
• Eating,drinkingorsmokingwillnotbepermittedintheTestCenter.
• Youmaytakeabreakwheneveryouwish,butyouwillnotbeallowedadditionaltimetomakeupfor
timelostduringbreaks.Youmaynotleavethetestingbuildingduringyourbreak.
MISCONDUCTIfyouengageinanyofthefollowingconductduringtheexaminationyoumaybedismissed,yourscores
willnotbereportedandexaminationfeeswillnotberefunded.Examplesofmisconductarewhenyou:
• createadisturbance,areabusive,orotherwiseuncooperative;
• displayand/oruseelectroniccommunicationsequipmentsuchaspagers,cellularphones;

• talkorparticipateinconversationwithotherexaminationcandidates;
• giveorreceivehelporaresuspectedofdoingso;
• leavetheTestCenterduringtheadministration;
• attempttorecordexaminationquestionsormakenotes;
• attempttotaketheexaminationforsomeoneelse;
• areobservedwithpersonalbelongings,or
• areobservedwithnotes,booksorotheraids.
COMPUTERLOGINAfteryour identificationhasbeenconfirmed,yourphotographwillbetaken.Thisphotographwillalso
printonyourscorereport.Youwillbedirectedtoaworkstationwhereyouwillbeinstructedon-screen
toenteryouruniqueidentificationnumber,whichwasprovidedtoyouwithyoureligibilityinformation
fromCDR.
PRACTICETUTORIALPriortoattemptingtheexamination,youwillbegiventheopportunitytotakeapracticetutorialonthe
computer.
ThetimeyouuseforthispracticetutorialisNOTcountedaspartofyourexaminationtimeorscore.When
youarecomfortablewiththecomputertestingprocess,youmayquitthepracticesessionandbeginthe
timed examination. Please note that this practice tutorial is to help you become familiar with the
computerizedexaminationformat;itispossiblethattheproblemswillnotbenutritionrelated.
TIMEDEXAMINATION
Followingthepracticetutorial,youwillbeginthe3-hourtimedexamination.Beforebeginning,instructions
fortakingtheexaminationareprovidedon-screen.
Thecomputermonitors thetimeyouspendontheexamination.Theexaminationwillterminate ifyou
exceed the timeallowed.Adigital clock located at the topof the screenupdates as you record your
answersandindicatesthetimeremainingforyoutocompletetheexamination.
Onlyoneexaminationquestionispresentedatatime.Choicesofanswerstotheexaminationquestion
areidentifiedasA,B,C,orD.Youmustindicateyourchoicebyeithertypingintheletterintheresponse
boxinthelowerlefthandofthecomputerscreenorclickingintheoptionusingthemouse.
Tochangeyouranswer,enteradifferentoptionbypressingtheA,B,C,orDkeyorbyclickingonthe
optionusingthemouse.Youmaychangeyouranswerasmanytimesasyouwishduringtheexamination
timelimit.
Tomovetothenextquestion,clickontheforwardarrow(>)inthelowerrightportionofthescreen.This
actionwillmoveyouforwardthroughtheexamination,questionbyquestion.Ifyouwishtoreviewany
questionorquestions,clickthebackwardarrow(<)orusetheleftarrowkeytomovebackwardthrough
theexamination.
An examination questionmaybe left unanswered for you to return later in the examination session.
QuestionsmayalsobebookmarkedforlaterreviewbyclickingintheblanksquaretotherightoftheTime
button. Click on the hand icon to advance to the next unanswered or bookmarked question on the
examination.Toidentifyallunansweredandbookmarkedquestions,repeatedlyclickonthehandicon.

Whentheexaminationiscompleted,thenumberofexaminationquestionsansweredisreported.Ifnot
allquestionshavebeenansweredand there is timeremaining, return to theexaminationandanswer
those questions. Be sure to provide an answer for each examination question before ending the
examination.Thereisnopenaltyforguessing.Alsoifmorethanoneanswerisrequireditwillbeindicated
withinthequestion.
CANDIDATECOMMENTSDuringtheexamination,commentsmaybeprovidedforanyquestionbyclickingonthebuttondisplaying
anexclamationpoint(!)totheleftoftheTimebutton.Thisopensadialogueboxwherecommentsmay
beentered.Commentswillbereviewed,butindividualresponseswillnotbeprovided.Onceyouleave
the test center, if you still have comments you may forward written comments to CDR at

five business days after the close of the examinationwindow. Please note that the appeal process is
different.
FOLLOWINGTHEEXAMINATIONAfter completing the examination, candidates are asked to complete a short evaluation of their
examinationexperience.Candidatesaretheninstructedtoreporttotheexaminationproctortoreceive
theirscorereport.Scoresarereportedinwrittenformonly.Scoresarenotreportedoverthetelephone,
byelectronicmail,orbyfacsimile.
PASS/FAILSCOREDETERMINATIONThemethodologyusedtosettheminimumpassingscoreistheAngoffmethod,basedupondatagathered
duringtheperformanceofaPassingPointStudybyapanelofexpertsinthefield.Theexpertsevaluated
eachquestionontheexaminationtodeterminehowmanycorrectanswersarenecessarytodemonstrate
theknowledgeandskillsrequiredtopassthisexaminationportion.Yourabilitytopasstheexamination
dependsontheknowledgeandskillyoudisplay,notontheperformanceofothercandidates.
Passingscoresmayvaryslightly foreachversionof theexamination toaccommodate forvariances in
examinationdifficulty.Toensurefairnesstoallcandidates,aprocessofstatisticalequatingisused.Slight
variationsindifficultylevelareaddressedbyadjustingthepassingscoreupordown,dependingonthe
overalldifficultylevelstatisticsforthegroupofscoredquestionsthatappearonaparticularversionof
theexamination.
INTERPRETINGYOURSCOREREPORTThecontentareascoresonthescorereportarenotusedtodeterminepass-faildecisionoutcomes.They
areonlyprovidedtoofferageneral indicationregardingcandidateperformance ineachcontentarea.
Theexaminationisdesignedtoprovideaconsistentandprecisedeterminationofacandidate’soverall
performanceandisnotdesignedtoprovidecompleteinformationregardingacandidate’sperformance
ineachcontentarea.Candidatesshouldrememberthatareaswithlargernumberofitemswillaffectthe
overallscoremorethanareaswithafewernumberof items. Theprecisionandconsistencyofscores
diminisheswith fewer items, and therefore, sub-scores shouldbe interpretedwith caution, especially
thosethatcorrespondtocontentareaswithveryfewitems.
QUALITYCONTROL/SCORING
Beforetheexamination isadministered,eachformundergoesqualitycontrolchecks.Athorough item
analysisiscompletedandisusedaspartofthestatisticalreviewoftheperformanceoftheexamination.

SCORESCANCELLEDBYTHECLIENTORPSI
CDR and PSI are responsible for the validity and integrity of the scores they report. On occasion,
occurrences, such as computer malfunction or misconduct by a candidate, may cause a score to be
suspect. CDR and PSI reservetherighttovoidorwithholdexamination results if, upon investigation,
violationofitsregulationsisdiscovered.
IFYOUPASSTHEEXAMINATION
Allcandidateswhopasstheexaminationwillreceiveawallcertificate,onlinespecialtyidentificationcard
andorientationmaterialsapproximatelyfourweeksaftertheyreceivetheirscorereport.
RE-ESTABLISHINGELIGIBILITYTo take the examination again following a failed attempt, a candidate must contact CDR at specialists@eatright.org.CDRrequiresa60-daywaitingperiodbetweenexaminationattempts.Anew
examination fee will need to be submitted; however, completing a new eligibility application is not
necessary if thecandidate iswithintheone-yeareligibilityperiod. If theone-yearcandidateeligibility
periodhasended,thenthefeeandnewapplicationwouldhavetobesubmitted.
FAILINGTOARRIVEFORANEXAMINATIONAcandidatewhofailstoreportforanexaminationforfeitstheregistrationandallfeespaidtotakethe
examination. A new examination fee will need to be submitted, however, completing a new
eligibilityapplicationisnotnecessaryifthecandidateiswithintheone-yeareligibilityperiod.If
theone-yearcandidateeligibilityperiodhasendedthenthefeeandnewapplicationwouldhave
tobesubmitted.
DUPLICATESCOREREPORTCandidatesmaypurchaseadditionalcopiesoftheirresultsatacostof$25percopy.Requestsmustbe
submitted to CDR, in writing. The request must include the candidate’s name, registration number,
mailingaddress,telephonenumber,dateofexaminationandexaminationtaken.Submitthisinformation
withtherequiredfeepayabletoCDRintheformofacheck,moneyorderorcashier’scheck.Duplicate
scorereportswillbemailedwithinapproximatelytwoweeksafterreceiptoftherequestandfee.
APPEALSPROCESSAn individual may appeal decisions regarding Commission policy/procedures (certification eligibility,
certification maintenance, and recertification)by filing a written appeal. The following exam-specific
appealswillnotbeaccepted:
• thereceiptofafailingscoreonaCDRexamination,
• theexaminationorothermeasurementtoolorindividualtestitems,or
• testcontentvalidity.
AppealsmustbesenttoCDR([email protected])within30calendardaysafternotificationofan
adversedecisionandwillbeconsideredbytheCDRAppealsPanelatitsnextscheduledmeeting.A$20.00
AppealReviewFeewillberequiredwitheveryappealsubmitted.Appealssubmittedwithoutthe$20.00
fee,willnotbeconsideredbytheCDRAppealsPanel.Acomprehensivecopyoftheappealsprocedures
canbefoundontheCDRwebsitehere.
