Research Centre of Sustainability and Future Studies

1. INTRODUCTION

Since 2008 and with the believing of sustainable development there was the idea to establish the Center of Sustainability and Future studies at the British University in Egypt. But it was started as a unit through the Architecture department and after the Future Intermediate Sustainable Cities Conference (November 2010) the unit became a Centre by March 2011

FISC was a futuristic vision for the sustainable development, which could be currently, included in the necessary studies and researches that Egypt needs in the self-building stage however; it was not made use of as it should have been.

The conference was connected to a competition for the sustainable future medium cities, and the ideas and scenarios of the 3 axes from the proposed passage of development and reconstruction, for the renowned scientist Farouk Al Baz.

Then, there was the revolution and the Centre of Sustainability and Future Studies as a Research and Development (R&D) Centre has emerged as an important part of the BUE’s efforts to address future sustainability in terms of environmental, economic, and social challenges through the engagement of students, academic staff and researchers.

The center and the British University’s vision became published, and participated in a lot of conferences, In China, Korea, Texas US, England, Italy, Germany, Jordan, Syria, UAE, Amman, and all of the universities in Egypt.

Then it was the stage to start cooperating with the important institutions, and the engineers syndicate in Hope and Work Olympics, to build Suez Canal Region’s people and societies.

Today the Centre within the British University in Egypt hold the responsibility of raising a few national issues including:

The conference of Sustainable Mega Projects (Chance -Change-Challenge) “from 3- 5 of May 2016” details will be followed.

Initiating the national civilization rights campaign “The National Campaign for Civilization Rights to Build Civilization (NCCRBC)”

The participation in the celebration of the 50 years anniversary, since moving the temples of Abu Simbel.

The attempt to utilize science, scientific research, and the Graduation projects in dealing with the challenges of our national issues, as well as the thinking of sustainable development.

Preparing for the “Green Heritage” Conference from 6th -8th of march 2018

Applied in the STDF grants for national topics for “The Scientific Tourism for the Human Heritage for Upper Egypt “The Civilization will be born from the Womb of Civilization”

The Centre activities: ‐ Organizing International conference ‐ Organizing National competitions ‐ Research proposals ‐ Preparing and participating Workshops and symposiums, Research, research support

and articles related to sustainability and future studies, Media articles, TV programs and International and national summer and winter schools

The aim of the Centre this year is not only seeking for the different projects and ideas to be “Made in Egypt”, but the aim are how to face our problems and plan for the sustainable future through the “Created in Egypt”. The Centre would like to be the bridging and linking the gap between the academic community - including both research and educational sectors - and the profession, national challenges and industrial community.

The CSFS contribution lies mainly in creating suitable scenarios for sustainable development through conferences, competitions, workshops and other activities. The journey has begun, but it still needs a lot of effort to elevate with Egypt, and the British University takes sustainability into account and recognizes the value and importance of future studies.

Research Centre of Sustainability and Future Studies

2. Farouk El Baz Forum for Young Generations

Introduction:

The Centre of Sustainability and Future Studies (CSFS), a research and development (R&D) center, has emerged as an important part of the BUE’s efforts to address future sustainability in terms of environmental, economic, and social challenges through the engagement of students, academic staff and researchers. The CSFS is envisioned to propose a number of creative comprehensive solutions that tackle the future from a sustainability point of view and to act as a think tank for Egypt and its expansion out of the Nile Valley to its 95% of desert opportunities. This is to be achieved through training and education, research projects, seminars, workshops, conferences, consultancy and publications. The Centre will also act as a data bank focusing on innovative thinking and sustainable strategies.

The center has conducted various activities in support of sustainable development such as the future intermediate sustainable cities conference (FISC). That conference was connected to a competition for the sustainable future medium cities, and the ideas and scenarios of the three axes from the proposed Development Corridor of the renowned scientist Farouk El-Baz. There was also a Taking Leave competition. Searching for the builders of future Egypt, before thinking about building of the future Egypt. Then it was the activity of starting cooperating with important institutions, the Engineer’s Syndicate in Hope and Work Olympics, building capacity of the Suez Canal Region’s workforce and societies. In addition, from 3-5 of May 2016, organizing the conference on Sustainable Mega Projects: Chance-Change-Challenge (SMP).

Farouk El Baz Forum:

Prof. Farouk El-Baz was the keynote speaker at the FISC Conference in 2010 and has conducted a continuous dialogue with the Centre at all its stages. Thus, the CSFS visited the Center for Remote Sensing of Boston University (BU), directed by Prof. El-Baz in August 2016. Discussions were held regarding the potential for development of Egypt’s deserts in the future to strengthen its economy and to open new vistas along the Development Corridor, including:

His Excellency's approval to be the Honorary President of consultants of the Center for Sustainability and Future Studies at the British University.

Establishing “Farouk El-Baz Forum for Younger Generations” (FEFYG), on 10 December 2016 which will be a scientific research bridge and link between the

research, ideas and articles of Prof. El-Baz (published and in preparation) and future generations.

The Forum includes a library and a museum that includes all studies related to remote sensing, GIS (maps and studies), groundwater studies and future studies (data bank), as well as all those studies related with space in which the Farouk El-Baz participated with NASA.

The FEFYG scientific research will be linked to the BU Center for Remote Sensing, which was established in 1986 as a scientific research facility in the fields of archaeology, geography and geology.

The FEFYG will conduct pioneer studies, competitions, symposia, conferences, proposals, graduation projects, post-graduate and specific research related to the challenges for the future of Egypt and other developing countries, and will be a focal point for other researchers and scientists in Egypt and abroad.

The forum should be a meeting point with the parallel studies available in Egypt, as well as the efforts and studies of Egyptian scientists abroad, and should be put these studies in the "Bank of Innovation, Ideas and creation" as well as the outputs of all studies and scenarios resulting from competitions, seminars and conferences to maximize the effectiveness of through application projects and entrepreneurship for young people.

3. Sustainable pyramid

Culture of Sustainability could be a hub for Sustainable pyramid this pyramid start from the undergraduate students through the graduation projects and research papers. Then moving to the higher level which are post graduate students supporting their master degree thesis though providing all the support through the research stage. After that the PHD level and it mainly concentrated on the doctoral and the projects or researches that could be applicable to be implemented in the academic field in form of research projects, workshops and summer schools or in the field to be projects. The higher level of the pyramid represented, mainly in the international conferences that support all the ideas of sustainability as it is the future vision of 2030 and the future researches.

The pyramid need a good base to be standing high so first the centre of sustainability and future studies working with the under graduates and postgraduate supporting all the data and welcoming all students from all faculties that their projects related to sustainability and could provide them with data, contacts and projects.

Figure 4: sustainable pyramid

This proposal also targeting institutions, to be one of the partners; in applying all pervious competitions’ outcome. As one of the research assistants duties are being responsible for analyze the outcome of each competition and what is the suitable use for the data weather as workshops, projects or even new research area. Starting by “Taking Leave” competition and “Hope& Work” and link that outcome to the action that the centre are working on at that time.

Culture of sustainability must be linked to all the centers within the university to create a sustainable campus and help in making the British university in Egypt pioneer in such target as happened in Michigan University as a role model for sustainable campus, Bue has

4. Culture of Sustainability (CSFS INTIATIVE 2017/2020)

THE ROLE OF THE CENTRE TO SPREAD THE CULTURE OF SUSTAINABILITY World widely, academic research centers are playing a major role for acting as community catalysts to spread knowledge and awareness about sustainability. This aims at transferring the academic research findings, projects and competitions into action. This calls for the need of social change and creating a culture of sustainability. The culture of sustainability in which individuals are aware of major environmental (and socio-economic) challenges, are behaving in sustainable ways, and are committees to a sustainable lifestyle for both the present and future. We can measure, monitor and evaluate it through specially designed programs of research designed to measure and track the culture of sustainability on campus as to inform/guide university operations and policies. It should engage staff and faculty and students. This is shown in the figure below.

Figure 1: engagement & education for the culture of sustainability

Accordingly, the Centre of Sustainability and Future Studies at the British University in Egypt shall act as the light house for familiarizing BUE (Community) undergraduate – postgraduate students, Staff and administration in all faculties about the culture of sustainability. This can be done through a series of workshops, training sessions and competitions that aims at spreading the principles and concepts of sustainability. This shall have positive effect on their lifestyles, study and eventually on their careers. The SCIP-Sustainable Cultural Indicators program is the new initiative proposed by the BUE for this aim. This is in addition to contributions from environmental design (ED) educators and researchers. The question that calls itself is what universities can do. They can educate the study body including the next generations of leaders (government, business and academics). Building facilities and infrastructure with sustainability I mind. Promote sustainability and sustainable behavior on campus, monitor and track progress, and serve as a model for governmental and corporate organizations. This can also create a profile of the campus sustainability performance, and allow for an integrative assessment, benchmarking, monitoring and feedback. Adopting an integrative assessment requires defining goals and measuring performance against the predefined goals. Themes may include climate action, Waste prevention, healthy environment and community awareness. The aim is to pursue stakeholder engagement, education and evaluation strategies towards a campus wide ethic/culture of sustainability. Researchers will measure the sustainability attitudes and activities of students, faculty and staff, as well as identify means of improvements.

Sustainability should be an integral issue on all design modules, and introduce coursework in the curriculum dealing with cultural and behavioral change. It is also important to implement and test innovations aimed at changing building occupation behavior. This is in addition to monitoring and tracking behavioral change within the selected building types. This aims at creating design environments that ‘teach’ sustainability. This raises awareness about waste prevention among students and faculty, and promoting and marketing alternative travel options, efforts to conserve energy and reduce co2 emissions, developing better ways of informing users about energy use in their buildings. This is in addition to educating all groups about the benefits of pro-environmental behaviors at home and on campus. Finally, it aims at communicating and marketing ways in which students, faculty and staff can get involved in sustainability activities on campus. The process shall process in the steps indicated in the figure below.

Figure 2: process steps of culture of sustainability project

Cultural sustainability indicators include both primary and secondary actions. The former group includes climate action (travel and conservation behavior), waste prevention, healthy environment (protecting the natural environment), and community awareness (travel and transportation, waste prevention and natural environment protection). The latter group includes sustainability awareness, commitment, disposition and evaluation.

This project is divided into three phases. The first phase includes setting the indicators of the culture of sustainability. This is performed through research projects and conducting a series of workshops. Research methods shall include questionnaires and interviews. The second phase includes involving staff members through open lecture and organized orientations. It also includes training sessions for BUE undergraduate students. Selected members from each department shall act as representatives for the culture of sustainability project in each faculty and department. This is to ensure establishing continuous generations to carry on the project. This phase also includes competitions with dedicated monetary prizes. Staff and students exchange is included in the third part of the project. This is to ensure coping with the latest research findings and ensuring knowledge exchange. This is in addition to a specialized conference call which includes original scientific papers in its published conference proceedings.

7. Green pyramid worship competition

The Green worship competition organized by the Centre of sustainability and future studies in collaboration with the Green Building Council aims at launching a design competition for a green worship building. The design principles should follow the sustainable criteria defined by the draft of the Green Pyramids rating system issued by the HBRC. This in turn shall act as a pilot project to test these criteria, their weighting and the guidelines set for the use of practitioners. It shall also present an opportunity to showcase the results of using the rating systems in advance in upcoming conferences. Valuables contributions of practitioners shall provide the feedback of these criteria and shall enable draft amendments before the final copy is announced. This is a step of establishing more research collaborations between the BUE and other national, regional and international research institutions. It also presents an opportunity to integrate active initiatives from academia and industry. It shall also enable knowledge and expert exchange involving staff and students to take part in setting actions for implementing the national plan of Egypt’s 2030. The competition presents monetary prizes in the form of modular prize for each winner. It is a mutual fund by the BUE, the HBRC and other overseas research institutions.

5.1 Green Worship House Competition Currently the role of green rating systems is taking a major role in building industry. Buildings have to adhere to certain criteria to guarantee causing minimum impact on the environment. This is in terms of assessing the sustainability of site selection, energy consumption, water use, materials and resources and indoor environmental quality. Sustainable building performance is reflected as an indicator to be recognized in the market and carry a competitive advantage over traditional building design. Many green rating systems have been developed internationally to exceed local building codes and regulations in promoting for sustainable building design. Examples for such rating systems are; LEED in US, BREEAM in UK, HQE in France, DGNB in Germany…etc. Some of them have been applied internationally such as LEED and BREEAM.

Green Pyramid Rating System In 2010, the Housing and Building National Research Center In conjunction with The Egyptian Green Building Council have developed Egypt’s national rating system known as the Green Pyramids. It represents the contextual adaptation of several international rating systems. It aims at assessing sustainable building performance based on sustainability of site selection, water and energy efficiency, materials selection and construction system, indoor environmental quality, innovation and design and recycling of solid waste. Four certification levels are granted according to the total scoring points of buildings and how much they satisfied all sustainable requirements. These are arranged from the least to the highest level as follows; certified, silver, golden and green certification level. Application: Green Worship House The competition aims at designing a green worship house that complies with all sustainable criteria explained in the Green Pyramid rating systems. This comes as a pilot project for expanding the application of the green pyramid rating system in other building types and scales. Hence, applicants are required to investigate the assessment criteria stated by Green Pyramids rating system and apply it in their design projects. The philosophy of the competition At the time countries around the world are targeting achieving a balance between future requirements and current needs, in order to sustainability principals, Egypt has launched 2030 Vision for the sustainable development of future generations to upgrade the quality life. Since the issuance of the environment law no. 4 on 1994 Egypt has rules of each linked to its development and environment balance through evaluation studies of the environmental impact including the strategic vision and policies and schemes and programs until the stage of projects. Since the end of 2010 as a complement to studies of the environmental dimension and impact, Housing and Building National Research Centre (HBRC) has been working on work a draft that measuring sustainability in relation to local architecture and urbanization, that draft lead to launching "Green Pyramid", which has passed through multiple steps of discussing by involved scientists and researchers at several levels. The Main Goal of the Competition The competition aims to raise awareness of applying “Green Pyramid” to a building in Egypt as a systematic step to identify what can be added or be modified so that it can be applied on future projects in Egypt to reach its main purpose. As “Allah” The Almighty God has created the universe and its balance in the life cycle of the creatures, we had to ask about the type of the building which can be the first application of the “Green Pyramid”, and, at the same time, the building should be symbolic and a basic need of life which allows the largest number of community members using it daily and continuously, that can help with spreading the culture of sustainable and green buildings, as well allows different levels of alternatives to design. Based on above, the competition will be about designing a worship house according to “Green Pyramid” rules and principles. The worship house whether mosque or church or temple can range from a small mosque (zawya) to a mosque to an Islamic center, or a small church or a church or cathedral, thus

Research Centre of Sustainability and Future Studies

this diversity which is suitable for various design proposals, and affects every community individual to become familiar with the concept of green buildings. Accordingly, the worship house will take into account all the standards of “Green Pyramid” beginning in site selection, energy, water, used materials, thermal comfort, etc. during its life cycle process including design, construction, control, and management, in addition to innovation and creativity which are main standards for evaluating participated projects. Assessment Criteria Projects are going to be assessed on a sustainable basis that covers environmental, social and economic concerns in building design. Hence, a full set of drawings that describe the concept as well as design developed stages need to be presented along with the Green pyramids checklist and another appendix explaining how each criteria has been approached and justification for the points gained under each criteria. 9. Organizing Graduation Day for the faculty of Engineering: (GDP 2016)

A. 7/9/2016

Engineering Graduation projects are the final stage for academia and the start stage of real life. It reflects an investment of ideas and future options for Egypt to achieve the challenges of sustainable development. GPD 2016 is an annual event that facilitates the opportunity for the best future engineers to present and fully explain their projects to the elite members of engineering community from all over Egypt.

Within Egypt’s vision 2030 and the challenges of Developing Suez Canal region the ideas and scenarios of different engineering disciplines will be presented during the GPD 2016. The event creates a dialogue between ideas and real needs of market and industry.

This day was prepared by the Centre of sustainability and future studies at the British University in Egypt, and under the supervision of the dean of the Engineering University, as the center started by creating a GIS database for all the faculty departments’ choosing projects to create a map showing these locations and the integration between all the faculty departments

B. GPD17 The Centre of Sustainability and Future Studies with the Faculty of

Engineering Graduation Project Day 2016/2017 will organize GPD 17 under the title of : Green Infrastructure

Regarding to Egypt strategic vision for sustainable development 2030, the government plan to build green infrastructure for new and sustainable cities in Egypt. The Faculty of Engineering in the British University discuss all the issues and challenges of designing scientific green infrastructure from different perspectives according to the faculty departments to process the Egyptian government desired ambitions for future generations. The Faculty of Engineering aims to get out different graduation projects with ideas of innovative and effective approaches that lead to the sustainable development in the new urban communities and related industries, as well as to overcome the obstacles that hinder the implementation of local production operations.

Since the graduation project is consider the last and the most fruitful stage between university education and professional field for the graduates to join his or her syndicate. So The British University decided to put these projects in the logical framework to maximize

the benefit from these projects by holding a yearly event called GPD. This event is

looking forward to gather all the engineering departments' graduation projects and dissertation on scientific bases that produce a concrete homeland future for the graduates that line up with the government strategy.

The faculty representatives have proposed eight different themes for all the departments under the umbrella of green infrastructure for Architecture department (green heritage) to present them to their students to choose what suites their projects. These themes are:

Buildings & Construction Water & Sanitation Electricity & Renewable Energy Transportation Safe, Safety & Logistics Communication & IT Heavy Equipment & Projects Finance & Credit

Each Student also has to choose one of the following locations for his project, these locations have been determined to match the government development strategy.

Sinai and the Red Sea Region. (The Hope) Desert Villages, New Cities and the New Administrative Capital. (The Reality) The developmental corridor of Farouk ElBaz Initiative ( The Dream)

10. Recent Projects (ongoing proposals)

10.1 The National Campaign for Civilization Rights to Build Civilization (NCCRBC)

This project got conditionally accepted from the ASRT with fund 3,500,000 EGY the duration of the project is 24 month between national and international campaigns and international competition.

Between future or urgent events & urgent national necessities there are issues on the individual level, the national level & the international level to believe in it and work on it, and despite of the logic, the principle and the clarity of the question and that who asks it there is no response as the right from your point of view is incompatible with others seized it and dealing with it as a considered brazen right, and negligent from your side throughout eras and generations and then some would marvel your claim of today's ancestors, homeland and upcoming generations heritage rights. The Just cause which is looking for your human conscience to support or opposition it is the profiting from the recruitment of Egyptian heritage products, transcripts, projects, programs, tourism, media and full industries, without any kind of financial or literary return for Egypt and its cultural heritage from each of those who profiteering of that recruitment with declared, specific and clear rates, so that return or income shall support the protection, safeguarding, maintenance and detection of heritage and sustainable development to the humanitarian heritage of Egypt, which suffers from the accumulated problems over the years could lead someday to dissolution.

It is a principle that “the right who has someone to demand never get lost”, so do we believe that we have a right? And did work on it as individuals or as a state on any level across Egypt or over the world? This case is extended as a thought since 1999 and then it became a reality proven by a study followed by studies, deliberations, research, seminars, conferences and articles since 2004, and it was the beginning of the debate on the cause in Cordoba conference in Argentina in 2004 in the scientific research : Cultural heritage and Tourism: Luxor of Egypt? Las Vegas? That research which represent the case that is repeated around the world where major companies are profiting from with no return to the original heritage, our cause does not prevent cloning but demands the right of fair return and interest from that profit Supported by not only intellectual property rights, but the geographic indicator and the brand and other dimensions of culture, civilization, humanitarian, economic, social, political, logical and ancestral.

Through the past period the studies, research, discussion and articles did not stop, the most up to date is the call of the international and global competition as a first Step in which national and international global campaign will ask the question of whether or not we have the right, a step will be followed by steps where we will start by addressing the national conscience and the conscience of the world.

The cause is simply that we have intellectual, financial, literary and moral property rights from all whom profiteered from the recruitment of the humanitarian and urban and architectural and archaeological heritage of Egypt which is proven born in Egypt, whether the original or the cloned, to become a billions of funds industry, where it must be that a proportion of returnees from those financial, literary and moral property rights to the original civilization owners (Egypt) and it could not be ignored or tolerated, in an international community where everyone is looking for his legitimate rights to assert itself and protect its proven destinies across generations and for generations to come.

And Between logic, controversy, local law and international law from one hand and bravery and courage from the other hand the cause and the previous attempts had lost and became a stash of rounds, the issue had never died and will not be ever, and I still advocate and search for a way for it, and its necessities and reasons became clearer to me and to my call to start a new round depends on addressing the collective conscience of the world in the journey of studying the cause of Egyptian humanitarian heritage rights, not only on the level of top to base claiming the rights to returned to Egypt from countries and international bodies and museums and those who considered our heritage a legitimate right and continuity of deliberations and demands, but also the campaign this time will start from the base to the

Page 40: CSFS - Final Report 12 April 2017 - BUE · 2019-08-22 · Anwar Sadat, and is presently a ... Senior Lecturer at the University of Plymouth, Director of Architecture programme at

Research Centre of Sustainability and Future Studies

top depending on the responsibility of the individual and the international community to support our demand for those rights. The campaign, although it has an echo and support of many individuals and institutions national and international but it will start by a simple and necessary step by collecting signatures, whether electronic or manually, and everyone is invited to be an inviter and courier who realize the dimensions of this cause.

The first step will be followed by other steps, but from the intention to the mechanism & modality, it was a must for this step to be, as such a step would make us sure that we do believe in the cause or there is no need for it, with my belief that Egypt has intellectual property rights of each whom profiteered from Cloned Egyptian heritage in Egypt and the world, and there is a deeper belief that your support as a human being in everywhere in the world to this cause is the only guarantee to make Egypt able to maintain one of the first human civilizations, therefore we address your conscience and responsibility towards a thousands of years old civilization to the stand of today for the coming generations. You are the first step before steps when international organizations, governments, global institutions and profiteering companies will be addressed, all you have to do is just to press yes to support our cause that we have intellectual property rights for each whom profiteering from Egypt’s proven heritage the original or the cloned or press no to decline it property
