CS 115 TA Orientation

Fall 2009

More students!

• Enrollment up to 230+

• 12 sections + night

• about 22% CS majors (50 on 8/16)

We must pay more attention to every student

• YOU need to check every student's progress regularly

• Contact them and me if they are having trouble– not turning in work, poor grades– not attending

• Let them know that you are interested in them

• ESPECIALLY CS MAJORS!!!!

MAGIC EXCUSE CARDS!• One per student• We will create• Has their name and section on it• Non-transferrable• Good for ONE day extension on ONE programming

assignment• NOT for attendance or lab assignments• Turn it in to you or Dr. Keen (write the date received on it)• Not needed if they have a valid UK excuse• Ideally used by the deadline, so you will know it will be

late, but may be used up until the absolute deadline – not after that!

Academic Alert!• I will be asking for regular reports on

students in your sections

• I will be emailing the student and you

• I expect you to talk to the student about their performance problems, I will do the same

• Document your communications

Informer pages

• At the lab where they are first given their number, it is part of their lab grade to show you their web page

• may do it again at midterm• and again at finals• To make sure they "keep up with their

grade!"

Office hours• keep a record of every student

who comes to see you

• help your students and others

• encourage students to come

• I am going to try to have some of mine in RGAN commons area

Lectures

• continue with groups and folders

Labs• Once the rosters stop changing, will assign

formal partners - permanent assignments but YOU can break them up!

• All lab work done as a team, turn in one copy• Demos that involve both students• Attendance broken out separately• Individual quizzes on lab work - ONLY

possible if you get them graded quickly

Lab Procedures• Get door keys and file cabinet keys from me• Leave doors open during the day• Printer requires DART card or ID• Printer is in RGAN 102, classroom is RGAN

103• Mailboxes in RGAN 102, use file cabinet

drawers for confidential things• Food/drink policy!

Labs

• Electronic submission and feedback to continue

• Undergrads continue to have office hours in RGAN 102, 2 hours per week

• Graduate TAs in Multilab, 3 hours per week for full-time

Graphics library added• Michael Main, Colorado State

University

• BGI.zip

• Zip file contains a ‘solution’ for Visual Studio, already has graphics.h header file included, and the obj files for the library

Graphics library added• All student has to do is

“Project/Add new item” and enter their C++ code

• Will get 10 warnings!

• Practice with it yourself!

Changes in gradesheets• Continuing from last semester

– each exam = 12.5%

– columns for lab attendance separate from lab grade

• New - "Midterm grade" column– no formula, just letter

– fill it in when asked and leave it

– useful for retroactive withdrawals
