!HOW CRYSTAL SINGING BOWLS ARE MADE: !Quartz crystal singing bowls are produced by melting natural quartz crystals of exceptionally high purity silica (SiO2), which is the scientific term for quartz crystal. Silica has a sand-like formation and is found throughout the world. High purity quartz, defined as having impurities of less than 50 parts per million is less common than low or medium purity quartz and therefore more expensive. Crystal singing bowls typically are comprised of 99.99% quartz, and are virtually free of impurities such as iron, potassium and sodium oxides. They are different from standard glass bowls, as glass is a combination of silica, soda ash and limestone. There are deposits of high purity silica in the USA, China, Russia, India and Norway. !The silica quartz is placed inside a bowl-shaped mould and spun using a centrifugal force and with precise timing an electric arch torch is ignited to around 4000 degrees centigrade, allowing the particles to be fused together in the bowl-shaped mould. !The original frosted quartz crystal singing bowls stem from the semiconductor industry and are used in the manufacturing process of computer chips. These original bowls have a frosted white appearance with a smooth glass-like texture to the inside of the bowl and a soft sandpaper texture to the outside of the bowl. !The frosted bowls are called crucibles, which means melting pot and stems from the Medieval Latin ‘cruicihulum’ meaning night lamp. The reason that these bowls are produced for the computer industry is because of the purity of the quartz, as well as the high temperatures which they can withstand in the production of silicon, used in the microchip. !The microchip is produced in a lab environment where the silica quartz crucible is filled with a liquid solution and heated in ovens to several thousand degrees and a piece of silicon is added to the liquid solution which allows a silicon shaped cylinder to grow inside the crucible. When the cylinder has reached the anticipated height and width it is removed from the crucible and sliced into extremely thin pieces where it is added to a plastic component, so that the computer chips circuitry can be etched onto the silicon to create a microchip. !The microchip is used in the manufacturing process of all electrical equipment found in the home, at work, in numerous industries, transportation systems as well as local, national, international and global communication systems. It is the microchip, which revolutionised our modern world of global media, communication and transportation. PROPERTIES OF QUARTZ CRYSTAL: !Crystals consist of a single chemical compound, where one molecule is repeated throughout, forming a geometric internal structure. A crystal is defined by its internal structure, which directly influences its exterior form. The crystal is made up of atoms which have bonded together, creating regular repeating patterns. It is these patterns that create a crystal’s solid form with flat faces and arranged in precise geometry and called a crystal lattice. Crystals can only form from gas or liquid solutions, because it is only in these states that atoms are free to arrange themselves into stable relationships with each other. It is the elements, which are combined within the gas or liquid solutions that create atoms which will bond together and determine the specific crystal. !Crystals always have the exact same fundamental internal order of the atom’s structure lattices, regardless of their outward appearance. A crystal lattice can be created and built up very rapidly when one or two atoms take up a set pattern and bond together. The shape of the original molecule, dictated by the atom’s size and elements involved, established the unit cell, which is that of the smallest part of the crystal lattice. Other atoms made up of the same elements are attracted to this first cell. In this way the crystal can then build up layer upon layer of repeating parts. It is only when all available elements have ceased or the temperatures and pressure changes within the surrounding, that the crystal ceases growth and leaves the outermost atoms as being flat external faces. !Every crystal is unique in appearance, but the angle between the corresponding faces will be same in all crystals that are made of the same substances. A single crystal can vary in size from a minute, sub microscopic particle to a mass of, as much as, 100-feet long. !Quartz crystals have many physical properties which include innate abilities to amplify, transform, store, focus and transfer energy which can be seen for example in the use of radio and television equipment, timepieces, laser tools and computers. !The physical body is composed of a liquid crystalline structure and therefore when working with crystals there is the profound possibility to create the same physical properties which creates changes and transformations in the organs, tissues, and cells as well as the circulatory, endocrine and metabolic systems. As quartz has the ability to store, transform, amplify and focus energy, when working with quartz crystal singing bowls, they too have the same

innate potential. As the body also contains this potential, then the two combined together creates endless possibilities and potential, when using and working with the highest intention. !HISTORY, PRACTICES AND CREATION: !Quartz crystal singing bowls moved from the computer industry into the new age community and complementary/holistic therapy. There is little information available as to how or who made the cross over and it is because of this that urban myths have surfaced in order to fill the gap. These urban myths talk of the original frosted bowls being disposed of in Silicon Valley in Californian in the USA. These crucibles were disposed of by the computer industry, it is believed due to the longevity of use, which caused imperfections to occur within the bowl, possibly due to the liquid solution added to the crucibles. The myth continues with new age healers taking these crucibles and somehow knowing deep within what these bowls were for and then using them to create therapeutic sound. !The crystal singing bowls are similar to the ancient Tibetan bowls which are played using a wooden or suede wand that is rubbed gently around the outside edge in order to create friction, which in turn creates beautiful harmonic tones and overtones which stay in the air for what seems like forever. !The original frosted bowls were the inspiration for a variety of new and innovative crystal bowls that have been created in the last ten years or so. These new bowls have been created specifically for healing, meditation and transformational purposes, and include the ultra-light-frosted, clear and specialist bowls which are infused with various additional crystal and minerals. All the crystal bowls are available in various sizes and alternative shapes including a bell-like bowl with a handle, called the practitioner series are also available. !All crystal singing bowls (except the practitioner series) are supplied with a small rubber ring (usually black in colour) and this should be placed under the bottom of the bowl so that the bowl doesn’t move around when it is being played. The bowls are also supplied with a suede or rubber wand with which to play the bowls. You can clean the suede wands in soap and water or with a suede brush. The suede over time becomes flat and smooth the more you play the bowls, so it is necessary to brush the suede to regain the grip. !The cost for the ring and wand is usually included in the price of the bowls and the cost of the bowls depends on the size and type. The frosted bowls are the least expensive in relative terms, with the ultra-light-frosted and clear bowls being the same price. The specialist bowls are the most expensive, because of the specialist mineral and crystal inclusions. !All the crystal singing bowls which have a flat bottom are played by placing them directly on a flat surface, usually the floor, which should be carpeted, as this absorbs the vibrations somewhat and creates a pleasant sound. If the bowls are placed on a harder floor such as a wooden, concrete, and laminated or lino floor etc, the bowls will generally need to be first placed on a thick rug or cloth; otherwise the floor’s surface will cause unpleasant sounding vibrations due to the surface of the bowl vibrating against the hard surface of the floor. !In order to play the bowl you would generally sit behind the bowl at such a distance so that you can comfortably and easily reach the bowl in order to allow the wand to be moved around the outer circumference of the bowl. The bowl’s sound is created through the coming together of the bowl and the wand; through the friction of the bowl being rubbed and the wand being moved around the outside edge of the bowl, which causes the bowl to vibrate and thus release the beautiful crystal sounds. When playing more than one bowl, each bowl should be approximately 1 foot apart, to ensure the vibrations created from playing several bowls at once are not close enough in proximity to shatter the bowl. !The sounds created from each category of bowl are unique and different and it is personal preference, usually from hearing and experiencing the bowls, which dictates which bowls the person works with. Some people also work with a variety of different categories of crystal bowls and feel that it is the mixture of the different qualities of quartz crystal singing bowls which brings the most beneficial effect, but there are others who believe that it is working with only one type of crystal bowl that is most beneficial. It is important to stress that it is the individual choice of each person which is important, through the intention, intuition and experience of the crystal bowls themselves. It is not what I or someone else has or has written that should make up your mind as to what will be right for you, but your own personal experience, exploration and connection that should be honoured. !!

CRYSTAL SINGING BOWL CATEGORIES: !Frosted bowls: The original frosted bowls are still produced and used today for the computer industry. The original frosted bowls are so called because they have a frosted-like appearance. The frosted bowls are available in the largest sizes, from 10 to 24 inches and tend to be thicker, heavier and sturdier than any other bowls. !The frosted bowls create very deep tones, because of their size and thickness, and this means also that they tend to sound for longer than the other bowls. It is also because of the size that these bowls are both easy and difficult to transport. They are easier to transport in that they are sturdy and less breakable than any of the other crystal singing bowls, but because of this they tend to be heavier and this can makes them difficult to transport in terms of weight, capacity and size. !The frosted bowls contain within them the original intention of their use for the computer industry and it may be because of this that many therapists and teachers prefer the newer bowls, whose sole intention is for healing and spiritual advancement. This is not to say that the frosted bowls are in any way inferior to the newer bowls, but it may explain why the newer bowls are becoming more and more popular, compared with the original frosted bowls. !The large frosted bowls create very deep tones with a long sustain of the notes, which means that they sound for a longer time than most other types of bowls. This makes them excellent for public sound meditations / sound baths. However, as these bowls are very heavy it is uncomfortable or difficult to play them either in the palm of the hand or when placed upon the clients body (which in any situation should be approached with caution and consent from the individual). So when working with individual clients, they are generally played on a flat surface like the floor or a table. !Frosted bowls are played with the a wand that is made up of a smooth wooden stick usually about 15cm long, with a rubber ball secured to the end of the stick. This playing tool creates smooth sounds. It is possible to play frosted bowls with a swede wand, though this causes more friction and a harsher sound. !The wand is held in the hand and the rubber part of the wand placed on the outside edge of the bowl. To play the bowl, gently and slowly rub the wand around the outside edge of the bowl, in order to create friction and therefore a sound. !The sounds the crystal singing bowl are almost indescribable by mere words. To understand the experience of the crystal bowls it’s best to hear the sounds and feel the vibrations of the bowls, ideally played live. If this is not possible then a good quality recording played through headphones is the next best option. !Clear bowls: The Clear bowls are produced purely for the purposes of sound healing and this is certainly more than apparent when you hear them, because they have a pure clear high quality energy and sound to their tones. !The intention for these bowls to be sound healing tools is both outwardly and inwardly felt and sensed when seeing, hearing and experiencing these bowls. !These bowls are aptly named, because they are clear to look at and have an almost glass-like appearance and many people think that they are made of glass because of the purity. The clear bowls are lighter to work with and available in 5 to 12 inches. !Clear bowls are easier to transport and thinner than the frosted bowls and because of this they are more delicate. These bowls because of their weight can be easily placed flat on the palm of the hand (usually up to the 9 inch bowl is generally comfortable to hold for a period of time, for most adults). !These bowls can also be placed at various locations on the front and back of the physical body (always ensuring you have permission from the person and that you do not place a person’s head inside the bowl). !These bowls are extremely adaptable for working with clients, because you can place them on the palm and play them and then move the bowl around the person’s body, over each of the chakras and throughout the aura. With this method you can pay particular attention to specific areas of the body, aura and chakras as is appropriate. !When playing the bowls in and around the person’s body and energy centres it is important to ensure that you have the bowl placed firmly and flatly on the palm of the hand (ensuring that you remove any jewellery which may interfere with the purity of the bowl’s tones or damage or break the bowl). Place the bowl in the opposite hand to that that which you would use to hold the wand. !When moving the bowl around the client, it can be beneficial to play the bowl using the wand before you move, rather than playing it whilst you are moving, this ensures that you are not only focused, but that the bowl will not fall and break and or hurt the client. If you gently play the bowl first and then move it gently around the aura and

chakras and physical body you can focus on areas which have been identified as being imbalanced and or those which you intuitively feel need balancing. !When the sounds of the bowl stops and if you wish to continue moving the bowl in and around the person, it is good practice to gently stop your movement and focus again on the bowl and create the sound before moving again. The movement of the bowl should be smooth and gentle and in a circular pattern around the client. !When placing a crystal bowl on the front or back of the client’s body, it is imperative that you inform the client before you do this and gain their permission and agreement. It is also a good idea to test the bowl on the client to ensure they are happy and comfortable with the weight and feeling of the bowl. The bowl should be placed only in the locations which will ensure the bottom of the bowl can be more or less flat against the body (if not, the bowl’s sound will be restricted). Please ensure that you pay particular attention and consideration to the client’s privacy. !When playing the bowl on the body of the client it is good practice to go gently and slowly, ensuring that the experience and sounds are both harmonic and non-intrusive. When removing the bowl from the client’s body it is important to wait until the vibrations have stopped completely as the client can feel the sounds and vibrations very intensely and the removal of a bowl prematurely could cause the client to be shocked. It is also a good idea not to leave the bowl on the body for too long, as it can become heavy and uncomfortable and you should remove the bowl as soon as you feel you have completed your work, ensuring you observe the etiquette already discussed. !The reason why the crystal bowl is placed on the body is so that the client can experience the transformational vibrations directly and very physically. This can be extremely beneficial for many acute physical, emotional and mental imbalances as well as those of a deep-seated, chronic nature. This method allows the sound waves to go to the very core or root of the problem. !The sound of these bowls omit a very clear and pure tone and the more you work with these bowls, in my experience, the more they give (this is the same of all sound tools). The bowls tones become clearer, crisper and more and more beautiful. !The clear bowls allow transformational energies to be made manifest. Although their size tends to be smaller than the frosted bowls, the sound should be relative to their size, however I have found through my experience of extensively working with the clear bowls that this is not the case. With the right intention and dedication to these bowls they can create sounds that although not as deep as the frosted bowls, they are just as powerful and long lasting, but with the added benefit of their being smaller and easier to move around. !The clear crystal singing bowls are played using a suede covered wand which is hand held and placed on the outside edge of the bowl and slowly yet firmly rubbed along the outer rim of the bowl. The suede creates a friction against the crystal bowl and the bowl begins to vibrate and manifest amazing sound waves. !When using more than one bowl, they should be placed at least 6” (10 cm) apart and should not be overplayed as both can cause damage or breakage. As with all the crystal singing bowls you should not hit anything hard against the bowl or knock anything into the bowls, as this could cause damage resulting in the loss of sound. Therefore it is extremely important to be careful when working with and around quartz crystal bowls. !Ultra-light-frosted: The inspiration for ultra-light frosted quartz crystal singing bowls stems from combining the possibilities of both the clear and the frosted bowls. These bowls are a mixture of properties relating to both types of bowls. They have an outwardly opaque appearance, but come in the same sizes, weight and height as the clear crystal singing bowls. They generally have higher, sweeter tones than a classic frosted bowl and they are less piercing than clear bowls. They are produced solely for sound healing purposes. !The ultra-light-frosted bowls are played and can be used in the same way as the clear crystal singing bowls. These bowls as with the clear bowls are very flexible and can also be played when held in the palm of the hand (up to the 9 inch bowl generally being most comfortable for most adults). These bowls can also be placed and played upon the front and back of the physical body (using the same directions as detailed in the clear crystal bowl section). !Specialist bowls: There are now several unique crystal singing bowls categorised as the ‘specialist’ or ‘collector’s bowls’. A forward thinking crystal bowl supplier created these bowls purely for sound healing purposes, spiritual development and meditation. These bowls are produced in the same way as the other crystal singing bowls but an additional crystal or mineral is infused with the silica. Examples include rose quartz, Egyptian blue, gold, platinum and moldavite. Sets of seven coloured bowls, one for each of the colours of the rainbow and chakras, are also available. !The rose quartz and moldavite bowls are infused with a quantity of rose quartz and moldavite respectively. The gold bowl is infused with 24 carat gold and produces a crystal, which is called aqua aura, which has a turquoise iridescent appearance. The platinum bowl is infused with both silver and platinum, which gives it an iridescent rainbow appearance.

!A bowl found in Thebes in Egypt and dated around the 13th dynasty inspired the Egyptian bowl; this is called a fiancé bowl and is held in the Eton Myers museum in the UK. The original Egyptian bowl has a rounded bottom and hieroglyphs around the outside edge of the bowl. !The coloured bowls are made from a combination of various crystals and minerals with the silica, and they represent each of the colours of the rainbow, which have been linked with the seven chakras and notes on the scale. Each of the specialist bowls are played and can be used in the same way as detailed in the clear crystal bowl section. !Each of the specialist bowls holds not only the signature of the quartz but also the signature and associations of that which they have been infused with, which therefore changes not only the appearance of the bowl but also the energies, sounds and harmonic sound waves. !Practitioner & round bottom bowls: The practitioner and round bottom bowls are available in the clear, ultra-light-frosted and many of the specialist bowl infusions. All the other crystal singing bowls have flat bottoms except these bowls and therefore the way in which these bowls are played and used is different to the other categories of bowls. !The rounded bottom bowls fit easily and comfortably in the palm of the hand and can be played in the same way as has already been discussed and, like with the other bowls moved in and around the client’s physical and energy bodies. These bowls also have a cushion/stand so they can be played upon a flat surface in the same way as the other crystal bowls. !The practitioner bowls are basically round bottom bowls with a separate crystal rod attached to the bottom of the bowl that is used as the handle. These bowls are hand held and were originally created especially for practitioners, as they allow total free movement of the bowl in and around the client by the practitioner, ensuring greater ease and flexibility. Because the hands do not restrict them, these bowls sounds vibrate for a long time. This gives the practitioner more flexibility in creating a harmonic therapeutic sound experience. !CRYSTAL BOWLS, NOTES AND CHAKRAS: !Each of the crystal singing bowls is tuned to a particular note on the scale and these notes are associated with a colour and chakra (see table 1 for details). When working with crystal bowls we can work with specific notes and therefore colours and chakras. !When using a chakra set of bowls we are working to balance the whole being and this is an ideal way to work with crystal bowls to create total balance. We can also work effectively with one or several bowls with the right intention. You have to work with what you have and make the best of what is available. Having more bowls does not mean you are a better person, therapist or healer, it is not the quantity but the quality, or not what you have but how you use it. !Table 1 !

!HOW CRYSTAL SINGING BOWLS HEAL, BALANCE AND TRANSFORM: !The bowls remove blockages to energy flow within the chakras, aura and physical body. They relax, re-align and balance the body, mind, heart and soul. The sounds emitted from the bowls are enchanting harmonic tones reminiscent of an angelic choir. The bowls create a feeling of peace in a loving and compassionate way, bringing us back into perfect balance and harmony.

!Negative states of mind, stress and tension, as well as daily life may cause disturbances in the natural flow of energy in and around our body’s energy systems. Energies become disrupted, causing blockages, which create dissonant vibrations as we become out of sync with our individual, unique and natural rate of vibration, and this over time may cause disease, stress, tension or disharmony to manifest. !Quartz crystal singing bowls can bring us back into our natural state of balance, retuning the chakras, aura and physical body to its natural state of healthy resonant vibration. These bowls allow the body’s, mind’s, heart’s and soul’s highest potential to vibrate in perfect balance and harmony. If you are in a state of perfect harmony your potential will shine and vibrate out into the universe. !Crystal singing bowls have the power and potential of both the quartz crystal with which they are made and the sound that they emit. The most abundant component of the physical body is connective tissue which is a liquid crystalline material. This connective tissue forms a continuously interconnected system throughout the living body. All the other ‘main’ systems in the body such as the circulation, nervous, muscular-skeletal, digestive, reproductive, respiratory and all the organs are ensheathed in connective tissue. The connective tissue is composed of semi-conductors that enable a range of oscillating bioelectric signals (vibrations) to spread rapidly into every tissue and cell in the body. (see; “Energy Medicine in Therapeutics and Human Performance” James Oschman, 2003) !The bones are made from a combination of collagen, which is a protein in the form of a double helix intertwined around it that forms the framework for a type of calcium phosphate crystal called “Apatite”. Apatite crystals exist throughout the body, in the skull and in our teeth. !These crystalline structures in our physical body resonate effectively with the sounds emitted by the crystal singing bowls. These bowls re-align those parts of us that are imbalanced with the use of sound combined with crystal. This creates a vibration that will amplify and transform the healing energies, which are stored within the bowl, and work directly with the crystalline structure of the body as well as alter brain wave frequencies, allowing us to enter into the alpha-theta optimum healing frequency and also creating a balance and synchronisation in the two hemispheres of the brain. !CONTRA INDICATIONS FOR THE USE OF CRYSTAL SINGING BOWLS: !If you decide to place bowls on the body always think about the motivation to do this and discuss with the client as to whether they would feel comfortable. If the person is pregnant is best to avoid any kind of body placement. If you and the client decide to go ahead, please consider the stage of pregnancy the client has reached. It is extremely inadvisable to place any type of therapeutic sound tool on the body of pregnant clients, especially in the first three months of pregnancy, where signs of the developing baby may not be evident, but this is a very delicate stage of the pregnancy, when the foetus is most vulnerable. !As the ear is the first sense organ to fully develop and because sound travels effectively in the medium of water, which the baby is held in, it is important to be gentle when treating pregnant clients and to ensure that a safe distance from the client is maintained (around 3 feet / 1 meter is appropriate). Placement of the sound tools on the body is best avoided. It is believed that there are many positive and beneficial effects to be gained from relaxation and healing sounds to the growing foetus. The advised therapy practice is gentle flowing sounds in and around the pregnant mother for the beneficial and positive effect of both mother and baby. !It is also important to be aware if the client has any plates or implants in the body (metal plates in particular) as this could cause discomfort through the vibration of the sound and the implant. It is advisable to avoid placing the sound tool on the body in the area of an implant. It is in the Institute’s experience of working with clients with various implants that any kind of problem is very rare, but it is important to be aware of this situation and go lightly and gently, always gaining the client’s verbal and written permission. When permission is gained from the client you can continue firstly by testing the sound in the area and avoiding placement on the specific area of the plate is advised (again remembering that you will be working only with friends and family at this stage). !According to the Epilepsy Action Support Services there is an extremely rare form of epilepsy, which can be triggered by sound, and it is sound ‘reflective epilepsy’ where such things as bells, music, animals and car horns, etc can trigger an epileptic fit (the sound is usually very unique to the person who will usually be aware of their own triggers). This is linked to those people with brain lesions which are usually detected early in life and most clients will be fully aware of their condition and trigger’s and would more than likely avoid this type of treatment. !The Epilepsy Action Support Services stated that sounds used for the purposes of relaxation and healing can be extremely beneficial to the majority of people with epilepsy. !!!!©  Colour  of  Sound  Institute,  2013   Page  !  9

!CRYSTAL SINGING BOWL PRACTICES & LAYOUTS: !Before commencing either individual work or work with clients or groups it is important to cleanse and clear yourself, your environment and the bowls (including the wand). The methods discussed in the cleansing and clearing section are excellent (please check with the Institute if you are unsure). !When working with a client it can be beneficial for the client to lie on the floor. The reason for this is because of the vibrations created from the sound tool which, when also placed on the floor, travel through the surface of the floor, allowing the client to not only hear the sounds, but also feel them, as they move from the sound tool through the floor and into the clients physical and energy bodies. It is in the experience of the Institute that the majority of clients find it not only comforting and secure to lie comfortably on the floor, but also the whole experience is much more relaxing, powerful and healing. !Thick comfortable flat floor cushions, quilts, duvets, futon cushions are all excellent for the purposes of a floor placed therapy bed. This should also include a cushion for the head, and tube or flat shaped support cushions for the knees and feet. You should also use rugs and throws to cover up the client as when relaxing or sleeping the body slows down and becomes colder. !If the client cannot lie on the floor then the use of a professional therapy bed is the next option and the client should lie directly on the bed so you can bring the sound tools to the client. Rugs, throws and cushions should also be utilised. !Please ensure that whatever type of therapy bed you use that it is safe, comfortable, conforms with health and safety regulations and that you have created a comfortable harmonic environment for the client to experience their therapeutic sound treatment. The use of natural fibres is most suitable for the therapy, including covers and support cushions. Organic fibres would be the most beneficial. !The use of strong patterns and colours are also best avoided as they are linked with awakened states. The use of light or pale colours is most appropriate and you could pick the colours according to that energy you wish to bring to the client. !It is advised that you refrain from using these therapy items for any other purpose and that after each session you open a window or take the bedding outside and shake out the client’s energies, which will have penetrated the material. You could also spray the therapy bedding with, for example, any of the aura-soma pomanders or quintessences as detailed in the cleansing and clearing section. This shaking out of old energies means the next client’s energies will not be interfered with or interrupted by the previous client’s. !The keeping of this therapy bedding for the sole use of therapy ensures that they are not only infused with therapeutic sounds but also other outside energies are not influencing them. Storage of this therapy bedding in your therapy room is most advisable. !On this course we teach you how to work with a chakra-tuned set of crystal singing bowls, although you can of course work with just one bowl. When working with a bowl set it is easier when playing the bowls to place them on the floor in a semi circle layout (see layout 2) adjacent to the client and around you so as to be able to play in a seated position. This ensures that you do not have to move around too much and you will not only be able to play your bowls comfortably and harmonically, but you will also reduce the amount of unpleasant sounds, including those sounds which might disturb the clients healing and relaxation. The layout of the semicircle can be created from working in order of the note/colour/chakra link and by placing the bowls in order from root to crown chakra (table 2). Other layouts of the bowls can be created and are covered in detail on the practitioner course. !When you are laying out the bowls on the floor it is advised to lay them out on a beautiful cloth, which is used only for sound therapy purposes. The colour of the cloth is unique to each person but either a white cloth, which reflects each of the colours of the rainbow, or a rainbow cloth with each of the colours of the rainbow on it is the best possible choice. A cloth, which is made of natural material such as cotton, linen or silk, is most beneficial (the Institute can supply chakra silk healing clothes to students, please ask for details). The placement of the bowls on the natural cloth creates one of two beneficial situations, firstly you are adhering to the sacredness of the situation with the use of a beautiful cloth and secondly the cloth separates the energies contained in the floor material from penetrating the crystal bowls and therefore the energies which are being created for the healing purposes. !The floor, which you are placing your bowl upon, will probably have been walked upon by many people (especially if you are working in a rented room in a clinic or in a house which has either floor material from previous owners or which you or members of your household have walked on). This means that the energy picked up on the feet as each person or animal has walked upon the floor will be ingrained to a larger or lesser degree upon the floor unless it is removed (which can be done using the cleansing and clearing methods in the previous section). This is why in

most temples and places of worship it is essential to remove outdoor shoes. It is also advised that you remove your own outdoor shoes and ask the client do the same before entering the sound therapy space. !When laying out the bowls ensure that you leave at least 1 foot distance between each bowl and 2 foot distance from the bowl and the client’s physical body, paying particular attention to the head in order that the sounds created will be at a sufficient distance and will not cause discomfort or damage to the client or their hearing. If the client is wearing a hearing aid they may wish to remove it, as high-pitched sounds can cause discomfort for the client. !In an individual session with a client you can also surround the client with the crystal bowls, placing the bowls in the relevant locations adjacent to the correct area of the body, which are linked to the seven colours, notes and chakras (see layout 1 below). You can move around the client from one side to the other, playing each set of bowls in turn. !Layout 1: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!If you do not have a full chakra set of crystal bowls, you can either place the crystal bowls around the client in the matching position using only the bowls you have (see layout 1 above), or in a semi-circle layout on the floor around you and adjacent to the client (see layout 2 below). !Layout 2: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!The placement of the crystal bowls around the client’s body provides easy access for the practitioner to the client when selecting and playing the appropriate crystal bowl and also its placement upon the physical body, as well as when placing the bowls in the palm of the hand in order to move the bowl around the physical body, chakras and aura (as detailed previously). !When working with a client and using a set of chakra tuned crystal singing bowls we use each of the 7 bowls either in turn or in combination. The use of each of the 7 bowls in the chakra set is worked with in order to balance the mind, body, heart and soul as a whole. Later on in this program you will learn about how to select crystal bowls according to one or more areas in the body, aura and chakras, which have been identified as being imbalanced. At this stage of the training we are concentrating on the holistic crystal singing bowl harmonic treatment and the experience or working with each of the 7 bowls in each of the areas. !The treatment should last for at least half an hour and up to one hour. The length of time to play each bowl or combination of bowls in the 7 bowl chakra tuned crystal singing bowl set in order to create a harmonic treatment is decided upon according to the individual client using your intuition. At the end of the treatment you should have played each of the 7 bowls and you may find that you have intuitively played one or more of the chakra bowls longer than other bowls. This harmonic crystal sound treatment creates a holistic treatment, where the whole person, not just the physical body and its associated chakras are being worked with, but through the therapeutic sounds the whole being is balanced through the ebb and flow of the harmonic crystal tone’s resonance. !©  Colour  of  Sound  Institute,  2013   Page  !  11

You can refer to the chakra section in this section to will help you understand the imbalances that come up and that can be detected in many ways. This could be dissonant sounds, the sound not sounding quite right, no sounding coming out, the person’s body language responding to the sound etc. !To begin with start to reflect what is happening with the sound and the person, see if there are any changes in the sounds in the beginning, middle and ending. Were there any bowls that did not play, or that sounded dissonant or not quite right and or did the client move in response to a sound, hold a part of the body, place a protective or comforting hand, cough or make a sound in response to the sound vibrations. This is the beginnings of picking up and detecting the sympathetic resonance as well as being able to intuitively respond to these inner and outer reactions and responses of the sound, by offering resonant sounds as a balancing frequency to the imbalances. !When you are ready to begin playing your crystal singing bowls, don’t forget to set your intention/motivation (see section on intention for further details) and then gently and slowly tune each of the bowls by gently taping each bowl individually and then moving up and down the bowls, until you feel intuitively they are ready for you to begin. To conclude this process tap each bowl gently three times, in order to open the bowls up ready for the treatment (three is the number of creation, the union of the male and female energies as an act of creation). This is an important part of the sound therapy and should take only a minute or so to do. !To begin play the crystals bowl by working with one bowl at a time, gently and slowly run the wand around the outside edge at the top of the crystal bowl. Do this only for a short period and when the sound gets too high pitched and uncomfortable, you need to stop playing the bowl, as it is being overplayed. In time and with experience you will know the right moment to stop playing and allow the sound to move out. You can also move on to the next crystal bowl whilst the other bowl or bowls are playing, in order to create a symphony of sounds and notes. Start with the base chakra bowl and go up the chakras until you reach the crown. Do this a few times at the beginning in order to do a general balance. This will also help you to tune into what is happening to the person as a whole. !Once you have done this begin to mix together the sounds by playing a combination of different crystal bowl notes and therefore chakras. This will also allow the client to enter into the optimum healing frequency of the alpha-theta border. !When playing for a client, intuition is used as to what length of time is appropriate for each bowl and each time you play will be different, according to the client, place, time and situation. When working with therapeutic sound it is important to follow your intuition and go with the flow of what is required at the time, rather than playing each bowl for an exact time and or playing the bowls in a set and rigid formation or sequence. !When you are working in a therapeutic situation with a client, it is important to stick to an agreed time, in terms of the whole length of the treatment. Therefore it is important for you to be mindful of the time whilst also creating a harmonic sound and maintaining flow. !When there are ten minutes before the end of the designated time, allow the bowls to finish their vibrations and once they have just about faded, tap each bowl three times to complete the sound therapy and when the therapeutic sounds completely end, place the wand back in one of the bowls (the wand should always be kept in the bowl rather than on the floor or elsewhere. This will be discussed in more detail later in this course). !It is most appropriate to give thanks to the energies of the bowls and the client and then allow a space of at least a few minutes silence, so that your client can integrate the sounds into their whole being. The grounding of the client is usually done before this silence and this will be discussed later in the course. !The playing of crystal singing bowls mixed or in combination with other sound tools, will also be discussed later in this course and this section is designed solely for the purpose of understanding and working with quartz crystal singing bowls. !SPECIALIST CRYSTAL SINGING BOWLS !The specialist crystal singing bowls are an additional part of sound therapy; where mixtures of several aspects interplay in order to bring about a truly unique tool. These tools can bring about amazing healing transformations and have a great potential for self-development. !The use of the specialist bowls as part of sound therapy is something which can be seen as offering a trinity of possibility through: !1. Sound: The unique and individual sound created by each of the specialist bowls comes from the amalgamation of both the original bowl and that which it is has been infused with. !©  Colour  of  Sound  Institute,  2013   Page  !  12

The sound of each of the specialist bowls has its own unique quality and tone. Just as the clear, frosted and ultra-light-frosted bowls carry their own individual sound, so too do each of the specialist bowls. !The sounds of the specialist bowls step things up to a whole new level. With their creation a totally new sound, and therefore a unique possibility, has been born. !Remember that the size and shape of the bowl creates different sounds, yet there is still uniqueness in the sounds of each category of the specialist crystal singing bowls. !2. Colour: The colour of the crystal, mineral and metals, which the bowl has been infused with, changes the appearance of the bowl creating a new colour code and energetic nature. The colour of the bowl carries various energy signatures within it through the language of colour. This hidden symbolism has been intertwined with language i.e. feeling blue or tickled pink. !As each of the specialist bowls are explored, there will be translations of the colour language and signatures of each specialist bowl. !3. Infusion: The infused crystal, mineral or metal adds another dimension to the specialist bowls. Crystals, minerals and metals are used in healing, worn by individuals and used for various reasons according to the properties of the substance and its associated meanings. !The meanings of each of the crystal, minerals and metals infused to create the specialist bowls will be examined. Guidance as to qualities associated with each crystal, mineral and metal will be explored to add to your understanding of these specialist bowls. !MOLDAVITE BOWLS !The name Moldavite derives from the Moldau valley, in which it is found. This is a unique tektite that formed from a meteorite strike in the Moldau Valley of the Czech Republic approximately 13 million years ago. !Moldavite has a deep olive green colour; it is very light in weight and translucent in appearance. Because moldavite came into being due to a meteorite strike on the Earth it is therefore unique in that it is found nowhere else on the earth. At some point in the future, due to the limited quantity which landed on the Earth, the existing supplies of moldavite will be more and more difficult to find any may become even more expensive. Moldavite therefore is a rare gem, which even now is very expensive in relative terms and in the future may be inaccessible or difficult to acquire. !Moldavite is thought to be a gem that can manifest profound and powerful transformations. It is believed that it has the capacity to assist in the communication of beings, which are out of this world. It is seen as a gem that should be used by only those who are spiritually aware due to its powerful energy signature and potential. !Moldavite originated on other solar systems and is seen as a means to stimulate and connect us to the stars and allow our hearts to be open to all the possibilities that exist within the Universe. Moldavite, it is believed, has exceptional qualities to assist in our development of psychic awareness and communication by allowing expanded mental vision. !This deep olive green stone assists in the opening and the healing of the heart and the absolving of bitterness and fears. Moldavite, through the olive green, creates a bridge to the higher heart consciousness, moving us towards the possibility of compassion, unconditional love and acceptance. !There are also myths surrounding the origin of the meteorite itself, which is said to date back to the deep history of the Universe. It is theorised that the meteorite began life as part of a planet not unlike our own, this planet is believed to have been destroyed by its inhabitants due to issues relating to power, control and manipulation and the use of nuclear weaponry, which lead to its final destruction. Moldavite can therefore access these deep memories and allow us to see into our shadow self; it can help us look at our power issues, which relate to our self-destructive nature both internally and externally and on the micro and macrocosmic level. Moldavite is seen as being available on this planet to assist in part so that we do not make the same mistakes as have been whilst being incarnate upon the planet Moldec, which is seen as the true origin of the meteorite that landed upon our planet. !MOLDAVITE CRYSTAL SINGING BOWLS !These bowls create tones that are out of this world, and have qualities and tones where the sound seems to be coming out of the bowl rather than from the playing of the bowl. Moldavite can be a stone that does not work well with others, and therefore if you would like one specialist bowl then moldavite could be the perfect companion.

!The sound itself has a haunting ethereal tone, which has the innate ability to immediately transport the client into deep states of consciousness that connect with our starry ancestry. !This bowl is truly unique and it creates sounds that are like no other crystal bowl, which is almost certainly the effect of the infused moldavite, which creates an almost indescribable quality that has not been heard for many millions of years, if at all. This bowl also works with the connection to those aspects of our being which are extremely ancient and which hold memories from our ancient and deep past. All that has been said about moldavite is also true of the bowls themselves. !EGYPTIAN BLUE BOWLS !The Egyptian blue bowls are unique and amazingly beautiful bowls, which are designed and created in order to link through harmonic vibrations to that of the sacred and ancient wisdom of the Egyptian empire. The Egyptian bowls are designed and modelled on the Faience Egyptian bowls found in Thebes, Egypt, which have been dated to the 13th dynasty. There is an original Egyptian blue bowl, which was found in Thebes, held in the Myers Museum collection at Eton College, London, England. !The Egyptian bowls are as individual as your own fingerprint and are created through inspiration from the original bowl. The original bowl is made from faience and dates back nearly four thousand years. Faience is thought to be one of the most ancient substances of an artificial nature found on the earth to date. It is theorised that Faïence was first produced and used in ancient Egypt as far back as five thousand years ago. The first production of faience in ancient Egypt is estimated at a thousand years before glass was first invented. !Faience is produced from a core of powdered quartz particles, which are fused together using a heating process. Once the core bowl has been moulded and cooled a form of glaze is applied and the bowl is heated once more in order to produce the colour quality of the bowl. This hand produced production process therefore ensured that each bowl, although made using the same process, remained unique. The production process of the original Egyptian faience bowls is extremely similar to the way in which quartz crystal singing bowls are produced today. The mineral used in the glaze is vanadium, which has a bone strengthening quality. !The appearance of the Egyptian blue bowl is of a royal blue cloud-like effect. The original faience bowls had hieroglyphs around the centre of the bowl; the modern day bowls do not have any form of writing on them. !EGYPTIAN BLUE CRYSTAL SINGING BOWLS !These bowls create pure clear high-pitched tones that have a clarity all of their own. The bowls vibration signature links the colour code of the royal blue and the sound itself which is the energies of clear sight (clairvoyance), clear hearing (clairaudience) and clear sensing (clairsentience). Rose quartz links to the energies of the pure heart, which are those feelings of unconditional love, acceptance, nurturing and compassion. This is a stone of gentle yet dynamic feminine energy. !Rose quartz manifests a quality of gentle loving kindness and the archetypal mother who is deeply caring, loving and kind but not in a passive limp kind of way but in a dynamic and energetic capacity. This is a stone of the feminine side of life, which is a mixture of the Kali and Black Madonna with the Mother Mary and Kwan Yin qualities and signatures. !Rose quartz can allow us to understand and accept ourselves without judgment or condition. With self-acceptance comes the acceptance of others, which then manifests through us as compassion and unconditional love in the world. !Rose quartz is excellent for all conditions of the heart whether they be physical, mental/emotional or spiritual. The energies of the rose quartz can melt, nurture and bring healing to all emotional imbalances of the heart and the stone allows one to love again both inside and outside of the self. The rose quartz helps one to realise the immense love and compassion that exists in every second of every minute of every day, and where there is a feeling of despair and heartbreak, whether from the self or the world, then rose quartz is the most gentle and caring energy to work with. !The pink of the rose quartz links to the mother energy and can be wonderful to work with for those who have issues relating to their own mother and for those who have lost their mother, as it allows one to link in with and access the most positive archetypal mother energy. !The pink helps in the working with the inner child energies and where we can find a place and space to not take life, the world and ourselves quite so seriously. It allows us to let go of the worries and stresses of adult life through the unburdening of our mental, emotional and physical baggage and to find or rediscover a childlike carefree going with the flow attitude to life. It is with grace and flow we can be in touch with our true nature. !ROSE QUARTZ CRYSTAL SINGING BOWLS !The tones of the bowl create a gentle loving kindness that is reminiscent of our mother’s voice and childhood memories of soothing melodies and songs, as well as adventurous and inspiring tales. !The sound of the bowls encircles one in a sphere of love that holds and supports in a way that is wholly unconditional and compassionate. If in doubt which specialist bowl to use then the rose quartz bowl will be a perfect choice. !AQUA AURA BOWLS !Aqua aura is produced from clear quartz crystal, which is infused with gold to create a turquoise/gold iridescent appearance. It is believed that natural aqua aura has not been found on the Earth in recent history and it is said to have appeared in its natural form only in Atlantis. It is believed that towards the end of Atlantis all aqua aura crystals of a natural formation were either destroyed or hidden. This is due to its powerful nature and it is said that aqua aura will only be found on Earth in its natural form at such a time when the power of the stone would be used only for the greater good of all. !Aqua aura is a combination of clear quartz and usually 24-carat gold and through the infusion of these two the stone aqua aura is created. Therefore the energies of both should be examined in order to understand this stone fully. !The clear quartz contains within it all possibilities through the clarity and containment of all other colours. The clarity of the quartz manifests a mirroring quality where through the clear quartz we see clearly the true nature of our thoughts, feelings and actions. Quartz also helps us to see through the illusion, and the clarity of quartz is a reflection of the light, which contains all colours, connecting to each of the energy centres in order to bring total balance. !Gold is a precious metal and is seen as a binding energy through the gold of the wedding band. The gold, which is bound around the quartz, is therefore extremely symbolic in the creation of aqua aura. Gold is a heavy metal, which reminds us of our physical nature. It is only a thin layer over the quartz, which is an indication of our true nature, which is predominant both in the stone and in us. The gold is merely the clothes we wear in this life and is not permanent or fixed. Through these potent reflections of the physical body and spiritual nature the aqua aura helps us see and reflect our true nature and the nature of our reality. !Gold is grounding, stabilising and balancing and protects us against any form of erosion on any level. The colour gold links with wisdom that is symbolic of the warmth, knowing and trust of one’s own intuition. The golden nature is enlightenment where we let go of the physical nature and find the light within. Gold represents the marriage of our true nature with physicality. !Gold also relates to the sun and the father or masculine aspect. Gold therefore can be used if sunlight would benefit the situation and bringing light to issues or situations can be most enlightening. The balancing or reasserting of the masculine side of the being can also be helped with the use of this bowl. !The iridescent turquoise colour, which the stones have in appearance, links the gold and the turquoise energies. The turquoise is the universal sea of consciousness and the self-enquiring nature of who am I? Turquoise also links with communication that comes from the heart, and the creative communication through expression. !Turquoise is also believed to be linked to Atlantis whose civilisation’s incorporated the spiritual realms into much of their lives through invocation, ritual, prayer, healing in a very profound way. It is believed that within Atlantis there were issues, which also related to power, control and manipulation, which led to the eventual downfall of this empire. Through the use of aqua aura one can come to understand our present state of futile grasping. This grasping comes with the desire to control and manipulate through power. It is only with the realisation that it is through the letting go of one’s desires for power, control and manipulation that we can experience pure power through the enlightenment of the soul. !AQUA AURA CRYSTAL SINGING BOWLS !The tones of this bowl have a dual nature - they are extremely grounding, protective and balancing through the binding to the earth’s plane, but they also have a light or enlightening quality to their tones. These bowls are excellent for working through, and with, issues relating to power, control and manipulation, whether that relates to oneself or others. !Whatever the intention when playing these bowls it will be amplified, stored and bring transformation. These bowls reflect light and energy and help us connect with true nature. They can be used to bring light to a situation and assist in seeing the situation, person or event with new eyes and seeing through the illusion created by the situation. !The aqua aura bowls are excellent for accessing and connecting with the wisdom of ancient Atlantis and allow past life recall of lives in Atlantis in order to understand our present karma and samkaras. These bowls are also excellent for grounding the energy bodies into the physical Earth plane. !PLATINUM/SILVER BOWLS !The bowl itself is not only infused with platinum but also with silver and therefore although its name is platinum it contains both metals of which both shall be examined. !Platinum is a rare and coveted treasure as it is found on this earth in only very few places. This is an exquisite and beautiful metal which is thirty-five times more rare than gold. Platinum's rarity makes it distinctive and the working with and wearing of this metal is a celebration of our own individuality. !Meteorites contain platinum and the first recorded meteorite was two billion years ago. Since the first meteorites this rare metal has made sporadic and fleeting appearances, mysteriously disappearing for centuries at a time. Platinum has always been seen as mysterious and enchanting to all who have been lucky enough to come upon its path. The Ancient Egyptians, Pre Incan and Spanish conquistadors all found deposits of this precious metal, but after this period it mysteriously disappeared only to re-emerge in the 17th century to mystify royalty and alchemists alike. Since that period it has always been held in high esteem for its longevity, quality and pureness.

!Silver is a general disinfectant and cleanser working on the entire physical and energetic bodies and was discovered after gold and copper about 4000 BC, when it was used in jewellery and other objects. Silver is a metal, which is found within the earth and predominantly in a combined state usually with copper or lead. !During the 16th century, Spanish conquistadors discovered and developed silver mines in Mexico, Bolivia, and Peru and these mines were extremely rich in silver and therefore resulted in the rise of South and Central America as the largest silver-producing areas in the world. In the mid-19th century a large silver deposit was discovered in Nevada, which meant that the USA took over as the world’s largest silver producer. In the 20th century this was surpassed by Mexico and South America, mainly in and around Peru. !Both platinum and silver have a reflective quality and are aligned with the energies of the Moon which links to the emotional side of life through the ebb and flow of the tides and the changing of the seasons. !PLATINUM CRYSTAL BOWLS !These bowls omit sounds of a clear, crisp and high tonal quality that manifest as being pure and clear in the physical and energy bodies. A connection to our own individuation can be reflected and contemplated upon with the use of these magnificent bowls. !The finding of our own unique qualities can be brought into being with the playing of and listening to these bowls. The platinum bowls also offer a cleansing and purification on all levels, where all aspects of the being are refreshed and renewed by ensuring that the old, unhelpful and stagnant energies are emptied in order that one can be filled with clear and pure energies. !ADDITIONAL USES OF CRYSTAL SINGING BOWLS: !Crystal singing bowls can also be used for various other purposes as part of the client treatment, meditation and group performance including: !Structured water: this is when the structure of the water is altered when the water is placed inside the crystal singing bowl and the bowl is then played for a period of up to one hour while the practitioner holds rests in a state such of unconditional love and holds in their mind an appropriate healing intent. The harmonic pure tones of the crystal bowls and intent are infused by the water and therefore its structure is changed into harmonically infused sound healing water. This water can be used for the client to drink at the end of the treatment and or for your own personal daily water intake. !This water can also be used in the creation of therapeutic sound sprays for cleansing and clearing, as well as the creation of sound tinctures (if you are qualified and experienced in the creation of tinctures). !The specific note/chakra/colour links can be worked with in order to choose the most appropriate bowl and also to create a harmony of sprays and tinctures. Distant healing: placing a photograph inside or under the crystal bowl or the person’s name written on a piece of paper and placed either in the bowl or inside the hollow of the bowl wands. Work with intention in order to send out absent healing. Always work in accordance with the greater good and with an altruistic compassionate motivation. As the energy of the intention follows the thought and this is combined with the energy of the bowls pure vibrations. The healing intent will resonate within the person sympathetically to balance and healing. !Candles and t-lights: the placement of small candles and usually t-lights upon a soft material circle inside the centre of the crystal bowls and played, particularly at night, create a beautiful harmonic and peaceful atmosphere. The energy of fire inside the bowls is being invoked and this is the energy of change and transformation for the greater good. !Cleansing objects: The placement of other objects including sound tools either inside a bag or on a cloth in order to protect the bowl, and when the bowl is played for between five and thirty minutes on average, will have the ability, through the pure clear tones to remove accumulated and or stagnant energy from the object. Always work with intention and ask that these energies be transformed both appropriately and in accordance with the greater good. !Symbols, cards and pictures: the placement of sacred symbols, mandalas, images and portraits of enlightened beings when played will invoke the energy it is associated with in will be invoked into the work that you do. !!SYMBOLISM OF THE BOWL AND WAND: !The understanding of the hidden symbolism of the bowl and the wand is important and can lead to a deeper and more profound relationship with your sound tools. !The bowl represents the feminine energy, and all objects which are bowl shaped such as the chalice, cauldron or bell, symbolise the feminine principle. The feminine energy is associated with the womb, which are nurturing, healing, caring and life giving symbols. The female is naturally intuitive, creative and has a greater connection to the intuition. !The bowl is representative of the moon, which is linked to the emotional body and the emotions of the human. Placing the bowl in lunar energy, particularly full moon energy can increase the receptivity of the divine feminine aspects of the bowl. The bowl itself is round or circular and has no beginning or end and therefore it represents wholeness, oneness and endless possibilities. !The wand represents the masculine principle which symbolises a dynamic active quality. This manifests vibrations which can help release blocked energy. The wand is a symbol of manifestation and bringing into being that which we require. With the wand manifestation is able to take place through its connection with the endless possibilities that are contained within the bowl and it is the wand that is the active force in enabling those possibilities to be made manifest. !The union of the wand with the bowl is an act of creation and by playing the bowl we are part of that creation. The means to create comes from the balancing and the union of the masculine and feminine principle, which is symbolic of the union of the self, and, in order to create, both aspects of the self need to be balanced. Therefore the union of these two energies creates therapeutic sound energy enabling the client’s energies to find balance and harmony. This is no coincidence; this is perfection and with the balance and union of the masculine and feminine principles in the creation of the whole or Yin and Yang. Thus, the union of the bowl and the wand, combined with sound intention, offers the endless possibility to be made manifest in accordance with Divine will. !The placement of the wand inside the bowl when it is not being played ensures that the masculine and feminine energies are being not only strengthened but also maintained and has the added bonus of easy access of the wand when you wish to play the bowl and also so that the wand is not knocked or kicked into the bowl causing damage or breaking. The placing of the wand inside the bowl completes the process and can be likened to the completion of a sacred and ancient ceremony where we are invoking and adhering to the sacredness through reverence and respect. !
