Birds

Music is not just entertainment. Music is a higher lan-guage, capable of communicating human thought and emotion across the boundaries of time. Each live con-cert we hear not only reveals the composer’s inspira-tion but also unites the composer, performer and listener in a unique event which is experienced only once, dur-ing the moment of a concert performance. I truly believe that the core of our human existence dwells in this mutu-al experience. That is why I would like to share with you some especially inspired pieces by my favorite compos-ers who have withstood the test of time. Schubert’s de-liciously drawn-out Octet, Schumann’s Dichteriebe, Mo-zart’s overwhelmingly beautiful Nocturnes, Beethoven’s

bucolic Pastoral Symphony, Vivaldi’s breathtakingly vir-tuoso concertos and Messian’s rapturous Quartet for the End of Time are some of my absolute favorite composi-tions. I think the miracle of timelessness is held in each of these pieces, their relevance felt as strongly today as it was the day they were first performed.

I am especially proud of the collection of artists we have who will be performing for you this year in the Crusell Music Festival. Their need to sing and play is so strong that no matter what the style or genre of music is I am sure you will enjoy their performances. They will be of-fering memorable moments we can all share together, in

everything from folk music to jazz, and from classical lied to vibrant modernism.

A Chinese proverb tells us: “ a bird does not sing because it knows the answer - it sings because it has to sing.” We too have no an-swers, nor will we need them, be-cause during this week we will all be sharing the higher language of music together.

BirdsAt the beginning of the concert!

The Crusell Week has commissioned five composersto compose very short, (less than 2-minutes long),pieces that depict a bird’s flight, its song, or its being. These pieces are meant to serve as a kind of aperitif to awaken the audience’s ears to new soundscapes. Theyalso unite the festival’s concerts with this year’s bird theme. The number of performers for these pieces will vary from solo to trio.

The composers are Asko Hyvärinen, Charles Neidich, Juan Antonio Muro, Veli-Matti Puumala and Minna Leinonen

Following this year’s bird theme, some concertswill begin with a new composition about birds.

BernhardHenrik CrusellBernhard Henrik Crusell was born on the 15th of October 1775 in Uusikaupunki where he also spent the first eight years of his life in a small house in the street Myllykatu. He got his first touch with music already at the age of four when he ran away from home to listen to his neigh-bour playing the flute.

When he and his family moved to Nurmijärvi, Crusell met Henrik Westberg, a son of the clarinetist who taught him to play the clarinet and in turn, Crusell taught him to read and write. Captain Armfelt, living in the neighbour-hood, noticed the musical talent of Crusell and took him to Wiaborg in 1788 where he was employed as a musi-cian in the Lifeguard. In 1791 Crusell moved with Major Wallenstjerna to Stockholm where he seriously started his music studies. In 1798 Crusell studied music in Ber-lin where he also gave some concerts. Next year, how-ever, he returned to Stockholm and married Anna Klem-ming. In 1801 Crusell gave concerts in Helsinki, Turku and St. Petersburg. After that, though, he never returned to Finland again.

Later, Crusell also studied in Paris. At the turn of the cen-tury, Crusell was especially interested in his own instru-

ment, the clarinet, and so he produced three clarinet concertos. Subsequently he concentrated more on vocal-ic music.

In 1818 Crusell was nominated the musical leader of the Royal Lifeguard in Stockholm. With his concert income as a base he founded a fund to help the widows and or-phans of musicians.

In the 1820’s Crusell met Karl Maria von Weber who en-couraged him to compose an opera. As a result, in 1824 he finished the opera “A Little Bond-Woman” or “Ali Ba-ba” which is the first Finnish opera. Crusell’s health had gradually weakened and in 1833 he resigned from his vacancy as the musical leader. Before his death, on the 28th of July 1838, he received the medal of honour from the Swedish Academy.

The clarinet concertos are regarded as Crusell’s major works. His production was characterised by large-scale instrumental music where his talent is most clearly visi-ble. The first Crusell Week was arranged in Uusikaupun-ki in 1982.
