hello Cruising is becoming increasingly popular as the holiday of

choice for many Australians. If you haven’t been on a cruise before, this issue is for you. If you are a one-time-only or regular cruiser, this issue is also for you.

Cruising is growing at a rapid rate – and it’s easy to see why. You can cruise the South Pacific on board a large resort-like ship, glide along coiled rivers on a luxury vessel, taking in breathtaking scenery, or cruise to off-the-beaten-track destinations and immerse yourself in worlds that seem almost fairytale-like with what they offer.

Issue two of Travel ideas is a special issue. The front section is your usual Travel ideas magazine with inspiring features that showcase cruising in its many forms. These features are about journeys, and they might inspire you to consider a cruise journey – or journeys – of your own.

The back section of the magazine is your go-to guide for everything to do with cruising. Its in-depth, informative content covers cruise types, ships, cabins and more, with 36 pages dedicated to the best cruise lines sailing the rivers and seas today.Tom Walley, Executive general manager

NEWS & EVENTS TRAVEL DESKSIT BACK AND READ

ABOUT THE LATEST AND GREATEST FROM THE EXCITING WORLD OF CRUISING

Get to know LUKE MANGANAUSTRALIAN-BORN CELEBRITY CHEF LUKE MANGAN LAUNCHED HIS FIRST CRUISE LINER RESTAURANT ON A P&O SHIP IN 2009. TODAY, DINERS CAN INDULGE IN LUKE’S FRESH FOOD ON BOARD P&O SHIPS AT SALT GRILL BY LUKE MANGAN RESTAURANTS The best part about cruising is you don’t need to go through customs or carry your luggage around with you everywhere you go. Every morning you wake up in a new destination. I also love the variety of activities on board, such as wine tastings, comedy shows and live cooking demonstrations. On board I spend most of my time at Salt grill, talking to the guests and serving up some of my signature dishes. I love having my restaurants on P&O ships because it’s a brand I’ve known for a long time. The concept came about because P&O was looking to have a free-standing restaurant with a fresh approach. I always wanted a restaurant on the high seas, so when they contacted me, it was an offer too good to turn down. If I had to describe Salt grill by Luke Mangan in one sentence, it would be using great produce cooked simply. One of my favourite experiences on board is the live cooking demonstration I conduct. I also love catching up with my family of chefs. My favourite fish is snapper, which we offer several ways in the restaurant, including steamed, grilled or tempura. My signature dish is kingfish sashimi with Persian feta and ginger eschalot. It’s an expression of my cooking philosophy of using great ingredients with fresh and simple flavours.

Luke Mangan always

dreamed of having a restaurant at sea!

FITNESS

Cruising for fitness fanaticsWant to get fit on board? Shannan Ponton runs bootcamps on selected Carnival Cruise Lines cruises, for those who are looking for a serious push.

Meanwhile, Crystal Cruises’ Crystal Symphony has a new outdoor fitness garden that allows people to enjoy the fresh sea air while they sweat, and new Norwegian Cruise Line ships have huge basketball courts and climbing cages.

The world’s biggest cruise ships, Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas and Oasis of the Seas, boast the largest gyms at sea as well as scheduled fitness classes to motivate people to move, while all ships in their Voyager, Freedom and Oasis classes have ice-skating rinks, surf simulators and rock-climbing walls.

Makes for a good reason to have dessert daily – or twice daily…

LEARN

Talk to the expertsWhen cruising through areas that are famed for history, geology, ecology or art, having an expert on the deck amplifies the learning experience.

Voyages to Antiquity’s list of specialists includes acclaimed professors, journalists and UNICEF ambassadors, such as archaeology expert Dr David Price-Williams, who will be on board the 14-day ‘Happy is the man… to sail the Aegean’ round-trip cruise starting in Istanbul on September 3, 2015.

Cunard also has high-calibre speakers joining guests on board Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria in 2014 and 2015. Queen Mary 2’s 2015 world cruise is a highlight – royal expert Caroline Aston will join the ship from Southampton to Civitavecchia from January 10 to 17, and British actor Robert Powell will join from Civitavecchia to Dubai from January 17 to 30.

Who knew learning could be so fun?

What’s yours? When it comes to cruising, there are themes (think gastronomy, wine and archaeology), and then there are themes. We’re talking the kind that offer guests a different take on a holiday.

American Queen Steamboat Company has everything from baseball to Oktoberfest covered, while Holland America Line looks after the Dancing With The Stars: At Sea type of thing.

P&O UK has recently introduced its Strictly Come Dancing cruises onboard Aurora, Azura, Britannia and Ventura, where – logically so – the focus is all about getting your boogie on.

For a laugh, Star Cruises has just launched its NANTA At Sea celebration on SuperStar Gemini, scheduled to run over the coming months. NANTA is the first Asian production to open off Broadway. The show has no words, and instead revolves around three chefs preparing a banquet feast – using kung-fu stunts!

Kids’ worldWITH EVERYTHING FROM WATERPARKS AND KIDS-ONLY AREAS TO MOVIE-INSPIRED CRUISING AND COOKING CLASSES, CRUISE SHIPS CAN MAKE KIDS’ DREAMS COME TRUECARNIVAL FREEDOM

The world of Dr. Seuss Following a multimillion-dollar makeover, Carnival Freedom has introduced Bookville, a stimulating reading venue inspired by the world and words of Dr. Seuss. It is complete with interactive storytelling, whimsical Seuss-inspired décor and arts and craft time to keep kids entertained – and learning – for hours.

DISNEY MAGIC

Frozen in time Disney Magic is scheduled to cruise an epic and scenic journey inspired by the popular Disney movie Frozen in June 2015. Kids will love sailing through landscapes reminiscent of animated movie scenes, stopping at Norway’s fjord region, Iceland and Scotland. The adults will no doubt love the scenery too.

MSC CRUISES

Tiny gourmandsLittle foodies (and wannabe foodies) aged between two and three now have a dedicated area on board all MSC Cruises’ ships to explore their inner culinary connoisseur. Supervised by the cruise ships’ chefs, the budding gastronomes can cook to their heart’s content… or just get messy. It’s fun either way!

NORWAY

Dramatic sceneryBe in awe of the Norwegian fjords on Azamara QuestNorway has a very high concentration of fjords (long, narrow inlets with steep cliffs created by glacial erosion, penetrating inland from the coast and deep into mountain wilderness). These age-old fjords have unique characteristics that are best appreciated from a ship – and the 16-night round-trip voyage on Azamara Quest, departing Amsterdam in August, 2016, presents the best. Highlights of the itinerary include Bergen, riding the steep railway in Flåm, ascending Storsteinen Mountain in Tromsø by cable car, and the tiny hamlet of Gudvangen, home to 100 people and 1400 goats! In between are the towering mountains and waterfalls of the fjords, which are simply breathtaking.

NATURE ENTHUSIASTS WILL LOVE…Sailing Canada and New England on Crystal SymphonyTake a 10-night cruise along St Lawrence River and the eastern seaboard from Montreal to New York in October, 2015. Budapest is 1397 kilometres from Amsterdam. If you do the journey by plane it takes two hours. By car, if you stick to the speed limits, it is 13 hours. If trains are more your thing, getting from B to A will involve an uncomfortable sleepless overnight trip squeezed into a dirty seat, watching the hands on the clock s-l-o-w-l-y tick by. The trip took me 15 days – and I’m not complaining about that at all.

Along the way I visited five countries, had dinner with a real-life princess, attended a private concert in Vienna at City Palace, owned by the mega-wealthy Liechtenstein family, and indulged in the all-inclusive five-star luxury that is APT river cruising. The only downside was that I needed to buy an ever so slightly bigger pair of pants on my return home.

To say river cruising – the new and more updated version of coach touring – is booming would be stating the obvious. In 2014, APT had 73 Magnificent Europe departures and another 30 from the company’s sister brand, Travelmarvel. The Magnificent Europe itinerary is how we tend to dip our toes in the waters of the Danube, Main and Rhine rivers.

I arrived in Budapest on Sunday afternoon for my cruise and was thrilled to see a man holding a pink APT sign waiting for me at the station to help me with my bags and transfer me to the ship. Fifteen minutes later I was on board AmaReina, the queen of the river, being introduced to my butler – yes, butler – and given the guided tour of my cabin while he explained the workings of my personal state-of-the-art Apple entertainment system.

If the cabins were hotel rooms, they would definitely warrant a five-star rating. Importantly, there is plenty of room to move around, ample hanging and drawer space, and your empty bags slide easily under the bed so you’re not tripping over unwanted clutter for two weeks. Better yet, the floor-to-ceiling glass cabin doors and windows give you uninterrupted views of the countryside as you ever so gently glide down the river.

Unlike ocean cruising, you will never encounter a ‘rough sea’ day. The only slight bump you’ll feel will be when the ship is making its way through the 100-plus locks between Budapest and Amsterdam.

for two, which is perfect for enjoying the late sunsets that are on offer during the European summer. So, too, is the top deck, which boasts a swim-up pool bar, seating for all 164 guests and enough room for everyone to find a quiet spot to read a book or snap pictures of the plethora of castles along the Rhine.

Life on board AmaReina is very relaxed. The main lounge reminds me of a hotel lobby and guests mingle here from early morning until very late into the night. The main dining room is divided into Bella Cucina and Verde restaurants and has a mixture of tables, booths and two private salons.

There is almost no reason (apart from buying internet access) to open your wallet, as the all-inclusive price includes everything bar a few top-shelf drinks. You will, however, have to get used to dining at specific times, but that’s to allow chefs in the dining rooms and the exclusive Erlebnis restaurant to deliver a consistently good product.

The paddock-to-plate menus reflect the areas you visit and the produce is replenished every four days. I loved the fact that, at most times, the wine served at dinner was created in the region we were sailing through – especially when the majority of the Rhine is covered in vines that produce high-quality drops.

If you feel the urge, there is a gym on the third deck, but I couldn’t tear myself away from the afternoon snacks to test it out (perhaps that explains the need for new pants).

AmaReina was launched earlier this year by her godmother, Princess Heide von Hohenzollern of Germany, and as part of our trip we visited the princess at her Andernach castle, Burg Namedy, built in the 14th Century.

Princess Heide was standing on the

front porch to welcome APT’s guests at the door and – apart from a few private rooms – she gave us the run of the castle. She even hosted a fabulous three-course dinner in the Hall of Mirrors, complete with a piano recital. This happens on every APT Royal Experience cruise and makes for a pretty special experience that comes with automatic bragging rights.

The 15-day APT itinerary includes stops in Vienna (you must try the pork knuckle at Naschmarkt); Bratislava’s Old Town; Dürnstein, where Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned in 1192; Salzburg, for the Sound of Music experience; Melk; the gingerbread town of Nuremberg; Bamberg; Rothenberg; Miltenberg; Rudesheim; Cologne, and, finally, the home of sex, drugs and windmills – Amsterdam.

For me, visiting Rothenburg was definitely a highlight. Founded in 1274, it is Germany’s best-preserved medieval town and is also where you’ll find the enchanting and captivating shop Käthe Wohlfahrt. It has every Christmas knick-knack

imaginable, and they will even pack your purchases and send them back to Australia for a moderate fee. Make sure you leave time for a walk along the town’s famed wall – it’s well worth the effort!

In most cases, AmaReina stops within walking distance of the towns, which means you can opt to explore on foot or by bike (the ship has 25 bikes for guests to use at any time) or sign up to one of the many optional tours with local guides. Don’t feel you have to stay with the group, though, as most towns on the itinerary are fairly small and it is impossible to get lost. A good tip is to stay with the local guide until you get your bearings, then head off to explore on your own. And that, in itself, is one of the reasons river cruising works so well – it allows you to be an individual in a group of like-minded travellers. Ph

“People say I look and sing like Ricky Martin,” says Thomson, confidently, as he ushers our group onto the tour bus.

It’s hard to spot the resemblance. A short, stocky Ni-Vanuatuan wearing a bright-red island-style polo, a black baseball cap and board shorts, topped off with a toothy smile. His only connection with the Puerto Rican popstar is a battered guitar and assurance from his sidekick, Annie, that he could indeed hold a tune.

It’s early afternoon in Port Vila and we’re heading out on a light-hearted bar crawl of the Vanuatu capital. Thomson and the perpetually giggling Annie are escorting us to four popular watering holes in the area, three of which have spectacular views of Port Vila’s natural harbour. After several rounds of Tusker, the local brew, we discover there’s nothing quite like a few drinks to loosen one’s inhibitions, and we

join Thomson in a hearty rendition of “Livin’ La Vida Loca” on the bus back to the ship.

Days before, P&O’s Pacific Dawn pulled away from the cruise terminal, leaving Brisbane’s glittering city skyline in her wake. As the high-energy music rocked on deck, you could almost hear the collective sigh among our 2000-odd fellow cruise passengers; we were finally heading off on an 11-night cruise to the idyllic islands of Vanuatu and New Caledonia.

Just across the Coral Sea, the fascinating archipelago is Australia’s most popular cruise destination – and for good reason. Along with endless summer warmth and famously friendly locals, they’re a world away from everyday urban life.

The main aim of most passengers on this cruise is to kick back and enjoy some of the South Pacific’s most pristine beaches, but we discover Port Vila is the kind of place

that can tug anyone out of ensuing beach-snorkelling-sunbathing stupor. It’s one of the more attractive South Pacific settlements, with a cosmopolitan atmosphere set against the backdrop of a beautiful natural harbour. Vila, as the locals call it, has resorts dotted along the waterfront and in the hills behind, and it’s a haven for duty-free shopping, with attractions including an authentic French Quarter and a bustling waterfront market.

The best way to savour Port Vila’s spectacular landscape is to take to the skies for an eye-popping scenic flight. We are accompanied by two guests – a retired Australian Air Force pilot called Nev, and Cheryl from Perth.

“I’ve never flown in a helicopter before… I’m absolutely petrified,” she whispers to me as we wait to board the chopper.

Minutes later we swoop into the sky and, like the rest of us, Cheryl quickly becomes

intoxicated with the scenery revealing itself below. Our 20-minute jaunt offers a bird’s-eye view of millionaire villas, luxury resorts and even a lavish “captured by police” mega-yacht rumoured to have been used for illicit trade.

New Caledonia’s capital, Noumea, is a world-famous sailing hub that attracts yachts from all over the globe. It’s also a place where Gallic meets the Pacific, a heady mélange of frangipanis, boulangeries, palm trees, short black coffees, mangoes and baguettes. Add a harbour where glittering yachts moor lazily on a mirror-

finish lagoon and the air of the French Riviera is unmistakeable, if a little sweeter.

The town has plenty of appeal for visitors, from charming areas such as Place des Cocotiers with its old-time bandstand to panoramic views of the lagoon from Ouen-Toro lookout. Also essential is a visit to the small beach community of Anse Vata at sunset, where local men wearing berets play pétanque under the shade of the palm trees most afternoons, the gentle thud of silver balls on the grass echoing in the breeze.

We soon find out that Noumea is only

a small part of what there is to love about New Caledonia. The next drawcard on the itinerary is the spectacular Isle of Pines. Captain James Cook discovered it in 1774 and named it for the predominance of Araucaria conifers in its otherwise tropical setting of deserted white-sand beaches.

To the northeast of the island is Oro Bay, home to La Piscine Naturelle, a natural salt-water lagoon hidden inside the reef and fed by a narrow channel to the open ocean, providing a unique habitat for hundreds of tropical fish and coral. To get there, we wade for 15 minutes through sea

New Caledonia’s Isle of Pines is a very popular South Pacific destination.

water from Oro Bay, which can range from easy ankle-deep to a more challenging waist-high. What awaits us is more than worth the effort; a white-sand lagoon filled with clear azure water, teeming with a psychedelic variety of marine life, from angelfish to banded sea snakes.

Pacific Dawn also explores Vanuatu, dotted with remote and fascinating tiny islands, the waters between which are a biodiversity hotspot known for manta rays, clown fish, turtles, billfish and sharks. Mystery Island is an uninhabited islet off Aneityum that has remained virtually unchanged over time; it has no phones or electricity, just pristine beaches and a few walking trails. Early in the morning, keen to explore, we are greeted by a group of enthusiastic Ni-Vanuatu locals, some dressed in warrior gear, complete with spears. They’d ‘captured’ a handful of bemused passengers and ordered them into a large, black cooking pot beneath the palm trees.

“You are tasty ingredients for a special stew,” says one of them, menacingly pointing his spear at the hapless group while circling the pot. The group looks

nervous, and I wonder if they know that cannibalism was a feared practice on some South Pacific Islands, including Vanuatu, until the 19th Century. Eventually one of the warriors bursts into laughter, giving the game away. As the group hops out of the pot to pose for photos, we venture away to go snorkelling. A fish-fattened tabby appears from nowhere, so we pause to say hello to the friendly feline. When a ship visits Mystery Island, a flotilla of boats packed with Aneityum locals arrives to serve drinks, sell crafts from makeshift stalls and hang out. “That’s Tiger,” says a local man in broken English, appearing behind him. “He’s my kids’ cat. He loves exploring with guests.”

Wala is another unspoiled islet, and home to some 300 Ni-Vanuatuans. Its white-sand beach fringed with palm trees has spectacular coral gardens just offshore, leaving visitors with the choice of going for a walk, snorkelling or just lazing on the beach. Even with 1500-odd excited cruise passengers ashore, there are plenty of quiet spots to claim, and for a group of kids from the ship, it provides a unique opportunity to play with local children.

Although they are from very different worlds and don’t speak the same language, they chat, play chase and bury each other in the sand.

There’s also Champagne Beach, located on the northeastern coastline of the island of Espiritu Santo, famous for its pinkish sand, sparkling lagoon and movie-set mountain backdrop. It’s named so because of a natural phenomenon; at low tide, the shallow waters appear to fizz like champagne, caused by gas escaping from volcanic rocks on the sea floor. It’s another idyllic spot where there isn’t much for passengers to do, beyond deciding which patch of sand to lay their towels on and venturing into the clear azure water for a refreshing dip.

Heading back to Brisbane – or, as one guest describes it, the “real world” – offers time to reflect on our South Pacific island adventure. It is a cruise offering the ultimate escape – a way to kick back from the stresses of everyday life while briefly dipping your toes into the culture of a place of true natural beauty. All you have to do is let the captain steer the ship and allow life to tick by in no great hurry.

Pacific DawnPacific Dawn is one of three ships in P&O Australia’s fleet, which is set to expand in 2015 with the arrival of Pacific Aria and Pacific Eden. Complete with 795 cabins, highlights include several dining venues, including celebrity chef Luke Mangan’s Salt grill by Luke Mangan restaurant and the Asian-inspired Luna, two swimming pools, a huge outdoor movie screen, a lavish adults-only area called Oasis, a spa and large gym, and world-class entertainment from the Pacific Cirque acrobatic troupe.

Carnival Cruise LinesCarnival appeals to young families, groups of friends and singles, there’s plenty of non-stop action for all ages. Carnival Legend and Carnival Spirit both carry 2124 guests, with 80 per cent of cabins boasting ocean views. Both were ‘Australianised’ ahead of their debut, from the beers on tap to the dining options and entertainment. Itineraries from Australia range from eight to 12 nights, visiting New Caledonia, Vanuatu and Fiji.

Royal Caribbean With so much adventure, including rock-climbing walls and mini-golf courses, this is a good option for young families and singles. Three of its ships – Radiance of the Seas, Voyager of the Seas and Rhapsody of the Seas – will be here for the summer season. Voyager of the Seas has undergone a revamp, with new features including a FlowRider surf simulator and inside staterooms with virtual balconies. Itineraries from Australia range from eight to 14 nights, visiting New Caledonia, Vanuatu and Fiji.

Princess CruisesA more traditional style of cruising, Princess Cruises is popular with couples aged 50 and over. Sea Princess, Sun Princess and Dawn Princess each carry 1998 guests, with many ocean-view staterooms and big-ship facilities, including a poolside movie screen, adults-only area aptly called The Sanctuary, multiple lounges, a casino and a spa. Princess’ Australian itineraries range from 10 to 15 nights, visiting New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji and Tahiti.

South Pacific cruise fileCruising the South Pacific offers holidaymakers a chance to see a diverse range of destinations that take in idyllic beaches, stunning scenery and authentic cultural experiences – both on and off the ship. The beauty about exploring this region is that although the islands are close, each of them offers a completely different experience.

From a geographical perspective, the islands are divided into three cultural vicinities. Polynesia is the largest and includes Samoa, Tonga, the Cook Islands and Easter Island, to name a few. Melanesia is closest to Australia and is where you’ll find Fiji, New Caledonia, Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands. The third locality is Micronesia, which includes less-visited islands like Guam, Palau, the Federated States of Micronesia and Kiribati.

With tens of thousands of islands, islets and atolls peppered throughout the South Pacific, choosing where to go isn’t easy, but wherever you travel you’ll be met with white-sand beaches, crystal-blue waters and locals showing off beautiful wide smiles.

Cruising these serene waters offers travellers the chance to see several islands in one trip and immerse themselves in a variety of cultures. The decision comes down to which ship and which itinerary is right for you.

on board a ship – surely food would get a little monotonous? No way! Cruise ships are very serious about taking your tastebuds on a tour as you travel the globe. Fine Italian, traditional Japanese, addictive Asian, innovative Indian and fabulous French can all be found on the high seas.

Cruise companies know that bookings can be made or lost depending on the calibre of the cuisine and the culinary offerings available. Most meals are included in the fare, but specialty restaurants and branded items often carry a surcharge and require reservations, and all dietary needs can be met.

On a world cruise, passengers can literally eat and drink their way along the culinary map, tasting giant Madagascan oysters, ethnic dishes such as Indonesian nasi goreng and Philippine adobo, and perhaps fresh fish and exotic fruits from local markets too.

For years, luxury liners have been luring discerning patrons with celebrity chefs and exclusive dining options, like the very intimate Le Champagne on board all of Silversea’s classic ships. The eatery offers guests superlative dining with a tasting menu of regionally inspired dishes to complement premium wines. It’s the only Relais & Châteaux restaurant afloat, so pre-cruise bookings are recommended.

Salt grill by Luke Mangan is Australia’s only celebrity chef restaurant at sea, where guests pay a fraction of the land-based prices”

On many Silversea voyages, guests can also tap into cooking demonstrations, epicurean lunches and visits to markets en route to learn about regional specialties.

Serial cruiser Vivien Devlin says: “On Silversea, with a day’s notice, you can ask for just about anything – the chefs are always happy to oblige. I love linguine Genovese and I asked for this in La Terrazza the day before we dined there. And on a recent world cruise, a group of six of us requested an Indian banquet while heading towards Kochi. Then, in the Maldives, four tunas were bought at the market and served, sashimi style or seared, as you wished, for the pool-deck lunch!”

With the opportunity to go shopping with the chef, explore gourmet specialties at local markets and enjoy special food and wine excursions in ports en route, as well as offering award-winning cuisine and fine-dining experiences that would rival the best restaurants on land, Seabourn was rated the best culinary cruise line by a panel of travel and culinary experts brought together by Saveur magazine for its 2013 Culinary Travel Awards.

Meanwhile, on some Uniworld river cruises, fresh produce is delivered direct to the galley kitchen from farmers’ markets and local suppliers. And when P&O ships replenish in Sydney, fresh salmon, barramundi and snapper from the Sydney Fish Market arrive to the ships’ galleys within hours.

On the other side of the world, French chef Jacques Pépin has long been charming guests with his namesake Jacques restaurants on Oceania Cruises’ Oceania Marina and Oceania Riviera – how could anybody resist steak frites (New York strip steak with French fries), poulet rôti (roast herb-crusted chicken with mashed potatoes) and suprême de saumon au court-bouillon (Norwegian poached salmon with rice pilaf)! As the cruise company’s master chef and executive culinary director, he also has input in all of the company’s other dining options, guaranteeing a fabulous feed wherever you decide to feast.

Cunard has had a 10-year relationship with US chef Todd English, whose signature restaurant is on Queen Mary 2. English knows the value of food on any cruise and says: “It is one of the most important activities… The [dining] experience is very much how a ship is rated,” he says.

UK-based P&O Cruises has employed the talents of celebrated chefs Marco Pierre White – the youngest chef to be awarded three Michelin stars – and Atul Kochhar – the first Indian chef to receive Michelin-star status – on its world cruises. Says Marco: “Since I joined P&O, I feel like I’ve seen the world. For so many people, cruises are all about the food. I remember visiting Marseille and having the most sensational bouillabaisse, the glorious fish stew with rascasse and gurnard and the flavours of Provence – fennel, saffron, olive oil.”

Acclaimed Australian chefs are also making their mark on cruise dining. Mark Best of Marque Restaurant in Sydney and Pei Modern in Melbourne has joined the Holland America Line Culinary Council of top chefs from across the globe, while P&O features Salt grill by Luke Mangan, currently Australia’s only celebrity chef restaurant at sea, where guests pay a fraction of the land-based prices. His menu – featuring premium quality fillet steak from Goulburn Valley, sirloin and scotch fillet from Rangers Valley Cattle Station and succulent rib-eye from Cape Grim in Tasmania – often commands an arm-long waiting list. “My goal is to showcase and promote Australian produce,” explains Luke.

If you’re hanging out for fresh Japanese flavours, take a cruise on Crystal Symphony or Crystal Serenity, where you can tuck into Nobuyuki ‘Nobu’ Matsuhisa’s sushi, sashimi, seafood ceviche or black cod with miso at Silk Road restaurant and The Sushi Bar. Naturally there is a surcharge, and if you check his sailing schedule you might even get to meet the popular maestro or take a cooking class.

Jamie Oliver’s Jamie’s Italian will be the first foray afloat for the popular British TV chef who champions good food prepared simply. Expect rustic pasta dishes such as truffle tagliatelle and wild rabbit casarecce on Royal Caribbean’s Quantum of the Seas from November, 2014 and on Anthem of the Seas from April, 2015.

Other cruise lines to lure celebrity chefs on board include Disney Cruise Line, with three Michelin-starred Arnaud Lallement; Hurtigruten, with TV chef Andreas Viestad

demystifying Nordic cuisine, and Paul Gauguin Cruises, with French chef Jean-Pierre Vigato on board MS Paul Gauguin.

Prime 7, on board Regent’s Seven Seas Voyager and Seven Seas Mariner, prides itself on serving the best steak at sea, with USDA Prime and 28-day minimum dry-aged beef on offer. Guests are also offered the choice of filet mignon, chopped wagyu and even massive half-kilo bone-in rib steaks.

After swimming and socialising by the pool, there’s nothing quite like a great poolside hamburger for lunch. Guy’s Burger Joint on Carnival Cruise Lines’ Breeze, Conquest, Freedom, Glory, Liberty, Sunshine and Triumph gets the nod for serving addictive burgers with melted cheese and spicy fries.

Sweet tooths will love the oversized cupcakes served at Royal Caribbean’s decadent Cupcake Cupboard on Freedom of the Seas, Liberty of the Seas and ships in the Oasis class. The delicious desserts continue with Norwegian Cruise Line, which features Carlo’s Bake Shops by Bartolo ‘Buddy’ Valastro (the Cake Boss chef) with to-die-for cannoli, tiramisu and, of course, cakes.

And for those who don’t want to go home the size of, well, a cruise liner, Royal Caribbean has also recruited the services of celebrity chef Devin Alexander, whose Devinly Decadence at Solarium Bistro on Quantum of the Seas and Anthem of the Seas focuses on healthy comfort food. It’s here that you’ll find low-kilojoule versions of a burger with fries and sausage penne bake, as well as indulgent desserts like Chocolate Not-Only-In-Your-Dreams Cake and True Love in a Bowl (banana cocoa ice cream).

of the company’s cookbook, Courses: A Culinary Journey.Exclusive dining experiences

Meanwhile, on board Carnival ships, cocktails and

hors d’oeuvres kick off the VIP experience, which then leads

to indulging in a specially designed menu for 12 guests.

Norwegian Cruise Line’s chef’s table is also limited to 12 guests, with a nine-course

Blue-footed boobiesFor bird-lovers, the blue-footed boobies are an absolute treat. The courting males perform a comical Chaplinesque dance in the hope of enticing the females to breed with them. Things can get quite boisterous in a booby colony, as the males attempt to outperform each other, so it’s a site of constant entertainment. When they’re not in a Broadway mood, they are graceful aviators and can be seen diving into the sea for prey from as high as 30 metres.

Marine iguanas The grotesque marine iguanas are a signature reptile of the Galápagos and are unique in the world in that they can swim, dive and forage for food underwater. Distributed throughout the islands, the adult males can grow as long as a human can grow tall and weigh more than 12 kilograms. It’s normal to see them in gregarious packs, or harems, on the rocky shores, surveying their territory and often snorting loudly as they expel excess salt from their noses.

Volcán Darwin tortoiseThe giant tortoise is perhaps the most recognisable symbol of the Galápagos Islands and, apart from Darwin’s finches, the most obvious example of genetic adaptation by an animal to the varying environments that exist on the fascinating archipelago. The Volcán Darwin tortoise lives on the slopes of Isabela’s volcanoes, grazing on whatever greenery it can find. Once critically endangered due to hunting and feral predation, populations of the tortoises are now slowly recovering.

Galápagos penguin One of the most entertaining trivia questions to ask is “Which species of wild penguin live north of the equator?” – because the Galápagos penguins are the only ones that do. This endangered and flightless aquatic bird is mainly confined to the western region, where the cool ocean currents make equatorial living comfortable and ensure regular food delivery. Life is not easy for these cute little penguins, as they are susceptible to natural predators, like sharks, as well as introduced animals, including man.

Sally Lightfoot She is not a folk singer, nor a stage performer; instead, Sally Lightfoot is a brightly coloured energetic crab that can be seen scurrying across the foreshore, clinging precariously to slippery volcanic rocks as if by tip-toe. Common throughout the Galápagos and the Pacific coast of North America, photographers delight in capturing their bright-orange hue contrasted against basalt outcrops and sea spray. They often live close to marine iguanas, and some are even brave enough to peck microscopic parasites off the big lizards.

Galápagos sea lions These fun-loving marine mammals are one of the two Otariidae species you’ll see in the Galápagos – the other being the Galápagos fur seal. There are several ways to tell them apart, but the easiest way is to remember that sea lions like the beach. The breeding season is almost year-round, so there are nearly always gorgeous little pups snuggling their doting mothers. Snorkelling with the playful little guys at Punta Cormorant on Floreana Island is a highlight of any Galápagos cruise.

Isabela IslandThe largest of all 20 islands in the Galápagos, Isabela is 120 kilometres long. Famed for its five active volcanoes, Isabela and its smaller sibling, Fernandina, are the youngest and westernmost of the group. Isabela supports endemic flora and fauna, like the five sub-species of giant tortoise, as well as penguins, iguanas, and birds, while the tortoises have mysteriously disappeared from Fernandina. Luckily, lush green cover can now grow on Isabela after 100,000 feral goats were removed in 2006.

Sarah McDougall, aerialistThe star and the showA fun and vibrant aerialist, hula hooper and clown, Melbourne-born Sarah performs in Dawn Chorus on board P&O’s Pacific Dawn. Introduced in 2014, the high-energy circus show captures the hearts and imaginations of guests of all ages.

What’s your favourite show moment? My awkward clown character bumbles her way to success and then the audience goes crazy for her! It’s great being able to take the audience on a journey with you on stage.

How do you find performing at sea? After nine years immersed in the circus world, this is my first time as a cruise performer and it has been an unforgettable experience – although performing on a moving stage is quite tricky.

What’s your favourite port of call and why?I love snorkelling in Lifou in New Caledonia and also Vila in Vanuatu.

Other than performing, what’s the best part of life on the ship? That’d definitely have to be waking up in a different place every single day!

Mary Kiani, singerThe star and the showMary Kiani is a well-known Scottish songbird who was originally signed with Mercury Records. Mary has been successfully presenting her own Live & Intimate show on board Holland America Line cruises.

What’s the best bit about your show?I like to be myself – which is very Scottish – and have a laugh at my own expense. My personality definitely carries through in my performance.

How do you find performing at sea?I love every minute of it! A recent highlight was when I got my own balcony for a show. It was a really special and intimate performance and the listeners loved it.

What’s your must-do port activity?I always make an effort to ride the open-top tourist buses at port stops, when they are available. I find that it is a great way to take in my surroundings and get an idea of where I might want to spend more time.

Other than performing, what’s the best part of life on the ship? Definitely not having to pack and re-pack my suitcase. Also the food on offer is fantastic!

the ship’s atrium, so the audience above get a completely different perspective to those watching from the ground level!”

Danilo Barican, bandleaderThe star and the showOriginally from Manila in the Philippines, Danilo has been working with Carnival Cruise Lines for 13 years. His band, Music Manila, currently performs on board Carnival Spirit. Guests love hearing their funky interpretations of dance-floor classics.

Where is your favourite place to play on the ship?Carnival Spirit’s Lido deck, as that’s where almost all our guests can see how we perform. We have a big stage to move around on, so it’s like a real concert.

How do you find performing at sea? We have a lot of fun because we meet lots of people. What’s your favourite port of call and why? Mystery Island in Vanuatu. It’s very relaxing with plenty of nice beaches to unwind at.

Other than performing, what’s the best part of life on the ship? We don’t need to drive or travel far to go to the venue for our gig! I can’t complain at all about the work-life balance – we’ve got it pretty good!

Insider tip…We love it when our audience interacts with us,

so don’t be afraid to get up and sing and dance! You’re here to have a good time and so are we, so let loose.”

Sally Egan, dancer The star and the showFiera! is Princess Cruises’ newest and largest production show to date, and Sally, who has been dancing professionally abroad for five years, is one of the inaugural cast members. The story follows two lovers through the magical world of sorcerers, fortune-tellers, waltzer-cars, rollercoasters and even carousel ponies that come to life.

What is the highlight of the show? When the MC’s daughter comes to the fortune-teller tent in search of her lover. It’s exciting, fast-paced and memorable. How do you find performing at sea? It’s such a great experience as it provides the opportunity to dance in multiple different shows in a range of genres – all in first-class theatres that rival many theatres on land. Where is your favourite port of call? How do you choose between the romance of Venice, the beauty of the Amalfi Coast and the excitement of Istanbul?

Other than performing, what’s the best part of life on the ship? Getting paid to do what I love while waking up in a different incredible location every day!

Richard Burr, magicianThe star and the showRenowned master magician and illusionist Richard Burr, together with his sidekick Josette, showcase the family oriented grand illusions magic extravaganza that is Touch of Magic. The show has been running on SuperStar Libra since January 2014 and will finish up in March 2015.

What is the highlight of the show? The close-up magic performance is special, as we get to interact with the audience. Just the experience of seeing their amazement makes us feel fulfilled as performers.

How do you find performing at sea? It’s always a fun experience, as it gives us the chance to travel the world.

What’s your favourite port of call and why?All of SuperStar Libra’s ports of call are our favourites, as we get to explore so many different parts of Malaysia. We also get to discover its beautiful beaches, which are absolutely incredible.

Other than performing, what’s the best part of life on the ship? The meet and greet with the audience.

star scoop

Insider tip…Bring tissues! Fiera! will e nite ma e ou augh

– especially when you see me playing a strong, scary gypsy – but it may also make you cry. You’ll be full of emotions!”

Insider tip…We’ve added laser lights to our latest illusion, so

not only do you get magic, you get a whole experience that’s unlike any other on land, let alone at sea!”

Ernest Marchain, actorThe star and the showErnest Marchain is a 26-year acting veteran performing in Chicago: The Musical aboard Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas. The Tony-award winning Broadway musical is set in prohibition-era Chicago and packed with glitz and glamour.

What is the highlight of the show? The courtroom scene. My character, Billy Flynn, really gets to do his thing. The show is leading up to whether or not he can use his ‘razzle dazzle’ to get Roxie off the hook, and this scene is a show within a show!

What is it really like being an actor on board a ship? Amazing! I have performed all over the world, and Royal Caribbean is right at the top of the cruise chain. The show directors, vocal directors and choreographers are so talented and good at what they do – and that shows in our performances.

How do you find the long stints at sea? There are times when you miss your shoreside family and friends, but most of the time we’ll have friends or family come cruising for a week or two. And, let’s be honest, you can’t beat the views!

Insider tip…Really listen to the Chicago dialogue. The book by

Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse is so clever, and if you allow yourself to buy into it, you will really have fun.”

Cruising is great for families on a budget, and there are plenty of options that suit just about everyone. If the thought of dropping your bags off in your cabin and not having to worry about the cheapest way to get from A to B, C and D appeals, cruising is the answer for you.

PlayOption one: Families on a budget will enjoy P&O Cruises. It has a popular route leaving Brisbane and travelling to New Caledonia and Vanuatu. Lean back, put your feet up and sip on a cocktail while you cruise around idyllic beaches for seven nights.

With a vast array of included meals, there’s no need to worry about spending any extra money on breakfast, lunch or dinner.

If you have kids, you probably won’t even see them, as there is a huge range of daily activities hosted by the ever-friendly and hospitable staff working in the kids’ and teenage clubs. Try your hand at bingo, table tennis, karaoke and trivia games!

Interested? Wait for Flight Centre’s cruise sale to receive discounted fares, on-board credit and 50 per cent off your deposit!Option two: Carnival cruises departing Sydney are another popular option for families looking at getting a deal.

It has a great kids’ program and fun-for-all facilities, such as mini-golf, an arcade and even a water park with a waterslide. It’s a fun paradise!

All of this – coupled with its interconnecting rooms – makes a Carnival cruise a great option for families with two or more kids.

StayTravelling as a group can often be expensive, but with P&O Cruises, large groups can take advantage of special deals that allow guests to receive extra benefits, such as a cash reward to the value of one guest’s fare, onboard credit for room bookings for cruises of seven nights or more, event packages with complimentary venue hire, as well as a beer and wine welcome reception or a personalised group photo shoot.

WHY CRUISING IS GREAT FOR THE BUDGET SAVVY

All meals are included in the cost of the cruise, so there is no need to spend much – if anything – on food.

Cruising is all about choices, so how much you spend is really up to you. You can book during a sale period for savings, select the cheapest room category and choose onboard activities to cater to your needs.

Getting thereFlight Centre often has great deals on cruises throughout

F R O M L E F T With plenty of onboard

activities, budget doesn’t have to mean boring; a balcony suite may cost

a little extra without breaking the bank; Cunard

has an impeccable turndown service; Queen Mary 2

doesn’t disappoint with its onshore excursions; aboard Cunard, you’ll be served by

white-gloved waiters.

Those who appreciate a first-class travel experience will certainly enjoy cruising aboard a luxury cruise line. Choose your ship and itinerary and then just appreciate elegant surrounds, impeccable service and superior amenities.

PlayOption one: For those wanting an all-inclusive experience – all food, alcohol and shore excursions – Crystal Cruises has it all.

Guests will enjoy the best of everything – from the finest available accommodations, cutting-edge amenities, gourmet dining from the world’s most celebrated culinary artists, an elegant array of enrichment programs and activities, and service that prides itself on knowing exactly what you need (and when you need it).

The Crystal Cruises fleet offers passengers every posh perk imaginable, from Evian spritzes by the pool to multi-course in-suite dining.Option two: Oceania Cruises is the perfect option for foodies, with wonderful fine-dining experiences on offer as well as great value drink packages for purchase.

Winners of the finest cuisine at sea, with no surcharges to dine at any of their specialty restaurants, Oceania is the only cruise company that invites guests to join world-renowned chefs to handpick local cuisine while at port.

Best described as a fine country club at sea, with more port-intensive itineraries and overnight stays to enhance your holiday experience – and

one of the highest staff to guest ratios – this is nothing less than world-class service.

StayCruising with Cunard is reminiscent of the golden age of cruising. White-gloved waiters, classic service and opulent trimmings make you feel as though you have stepped back in time, but with all the modern luxuries.

Nothing beats the grand duplex suites, with more than 25 square metres of room over two floors. They include full butler and concierge service, 24-hour room service, free in-room dining, priority boarding and disembarkation, as well as exclusive access to the Queens Grill Restaurant.

WHY CRUISING IS GREAT FOR THE LUXURY LOVER

Chefs on board luxury cruises often source top-grade local produce, so dining on board a luxury vessel can be likened to eating at some of the world’s top restaurants.

Onshore excursions are given the same treatment as the onboard experience, so expect to be looked after!

Absolutely! Cruising offers families the chance to spend quality time together in an environment that caters to all age groups.

There are many options to keep both adults and children entertained, and they’re generally

all included in the fare. Some of my favourites include a dedicated in-line skating track, a nine-hole miniature golf course, the largest rock-climbing wall at sea, the FlowRider wave-making machine, a huge ice-skating rink, outdoor water parks, zip-line rides, comedy clubs and a wide range of stage shows and performances.

Many cruises offer kids’ clubs, so parents can relax knowing their little ones will be well looked after, and some ships even have designated adults-only areas for some true R&R. MICHELLE FLAZI, TRAVEL CONSULTANT, FLIGHT CENTRE MIAMI

There’s no harm in starting your holiday early by booking a night’s accommodation before your cruise. Cruises are not really that forgiving if your travel plans are delayed, so should the

I’d recommend starting with a five- or seven-night

voyage. The two- and three-night cruises are also a great starting point, but a few extra nights will give you the chance to disembark at a variety of ports and experience different cultures.

Not at all! It can sometimes seem more expensive

when you first see the total price, but once you break it down to a cost per day and take into account that the fare includes accommodation, entertainment, most activities and fantastic food, not only does it make for a very affordable holiday, it can sometimes be cheaper than your day-to-day living at home!JAMIE MEAKIN, SENIOR

Value for money: Whatever type of cruise you choose will include your accommodation, food, travel, entertainment and, often, other additions.

Discover other locales: Waking up in a different place nearly every day is a definite bonus. Explore different regions easily and comfortably.

Unpack once: When you board the ship, you really have arrived at your home away from home, and you won’t need to pack again until the end of the cruise.

Experience different cultures: Cruising offers you the opportunity to immerse yourself in various cultures. By visiting different countries, you will be able to learn, absorb and explore the world around you.

Shore excursions: One of the greatest ways to experience the very best of your ports of call is to participate in your cruise ship’s shore excursions. These include cultural walking tours, cooking schools, shopping tours and many adventures, including helicopter rides, mountain biking, canoeing, white-water rafting and trekking. Book these prior to your cruise or at the start so you don’t miss out.

Foodies’ heaven: Variety is the spice of life, and this is especially true for the culinary choices on cruises. From poolside barbecues to five-course meals, foodies will love what’s on offer. Most ships have self-service buffets and casual eateries. Formal nights are common too (men should wear a suit, while women should opt for a cocktail dress).

Then there are specialty restaurants

Did you know that Australia is currently recognised as one of the leading cruise markets in the world? If you simply chat to friends and family, you’ll soon realise that cruising is one of the most popular ways to travel.

With a choice of more than 300 ships – small, large and everything in between – and about 2000 ports of call across the world, there is a perfect cruise for everyone.

Cruising allows you to immerse yourself in the life around you – different cultures and countries – with the perk of only having to unpack once.

On a cruise, you can see the world, unwind completely, experience diverse cultures, dance the night away, feast on fabulous cuisine, learn new skills, make new friends and bond with your family.

The possibilities are endless, and the benefits are plentiful…

WHICH ONE?

Choose your cruiseFROM MASS IVE SH IPS THAT NAV IGATE ACROSS THE SEAS TO VESSELS THAT GL IDE DOWN SCEN IC R IVERS , CHOOS ING YOUR CRU ISE I S HALF THE FUN !

Ocean cruises give you the opportunity to see the whole world, with endless possibilities at your disposal.

These days, highly competitive prices mean it now suits young families wanting a fun-filled experience as well as groups, couples and singles wishing to circumnavigate the globe in high style.

Resort-style ships are the biggest cruise ships, and because of this they house just about everything. Diversity and choice are both huge benefits of choosing an ocean cruise.

Onboard facilities include – but are not limited to – casinos, pools, saunas, rock-climbing walls, ice-skating rinks, kids’ clubs and entertainment centres, while activities range from 4D movies, destination-based lectures and fitness and cooking classes to dining with the captain and indulging in lavish spa treatments.

The most difficult part of ocean cruising is choosing which one to take. Do you want to shop for a bargain in Singapore, listen to the steel drums of the Caribbean, marvel at centuries-old European architecture or laze on a white-sand beach on an Asian island? With the right ocean cruise, you can do it all.

Adventure and small ship cruising allows you to journey to some of the most remote regions of the world. Live life under billowing sails, take part in scientific expeditions and participate in unique experiences and seminars.

This type of cruising often comes down to the choice of destination and, generally, there are fewer passengers on board than on the larger ocean cruising lines, with numbers starting at less than 50 and climbing to about 500.

Smaller ships are at an advantage as their size enables them to cruise to more shallow or narrow waterways, gaining access to unique destinations.

Onshore excursion options are plentiful with this type of cruise, as travelling to destinations that are off the beaten track is essentially about exploring diverse ecological terrains and cultural wonders.

Many adventure and small ships have inflatable Zodiacs that transport passengers into the depths of the environment that is being explored. Traversing spectacular icebergs and watching wildlife, camping out on an ice-shelf or snorkelling with sea lions in the Galápagos islands are just a few of the options available with adventure and small ship cruising.

Intimate, exciting and beautiful, exploring the world’s great rivers, lakes and canals offers a spectacular way to see a country up close, especially since towns and cities are often peppered along the edges of waterways.

River ships are smaller than their ocean-going sisters, typically holding 100 to 250 passengers, offering intimacy and comfort.

They cover considerable distances, allowing you to see a great deal of the countries you are visiting. Only having to unpack once is a benefit, particularly as you are able to explore so many different cities on most cruises. Smaller vessels also allow admittance to areas larger ships cannot access.

Cruising through the heart of a destination, whether it’s magical Budapest in Hungary, the Nile in Egypt or the fascinating Mekong Delta in Vietnam, is a great way to observe local village life. Ships are often docked in the centre of cities and towns during stops – a dream for any sightseer!

Luxury cruising can be likened to an extravagant floating resort, filled with everything your heart desires. Those who appreciate a first-class travel experience will undoubtedly enjoy cruising aboard a luxury cruise line, where spacious surroundings, art collections, flawless personal service, extra stateroom amenities, quality linens and onboard enrichment programs are just a few of the inclusions.

Cuisine is creative, fine dining is a highlight and connoisseur wines and premium spirits take centre stage on luxury cruises.

Luxury vessels can carry anywhere from 500 to 1000 guests and offer a high passenger-space ratio.

These ships sail to ports that are chosen based on what sophisticated travellers desire.

River cruising Luxury cruising

Miltenberg is considered by many to be the pearl of Germany’s Main river.

Engagement: Embarking on a river cruise is about immersing yourself in your surroundings, which is easy to do because of the proximity of most river cruise ports and shore excursions.

Divine dining: River cruise chefs take great pride in using – and showing off – produce that’s local to the area the ship is cruising in.

Easy border crossings: Visas and border patrols are taken care of, so all you have to do is enjoy the journey while someone else takes care of the finer details.

Spectacular service: With smaller ships and fewer passengers, the attentive and courteous staff members on board a river cruise feel more like friends.

WHY CHOOSE A RIVER CRUISE?

Top-quality amenities: Luxury cruise lines offer a more luxurious experience with their spas, health clubs, pools, restaurants, lounges, entertainment and casinos.

Shore excursions in style: Whether you are exploring the Chilkoot Trail in Alaska or sipping on a fine Chianti in Florence, luxury shore excursions are always designed around comfort and service, just like your onboard experience.

Spacious elegance: Generally, accommodation on a luxury cruise will offer more space and more features. Some rooms feature in-room spas, private balconies, 24-hour butler service and flat-screen televisions. Fine dining at its best: Dining is understood to be an integral part of luxury cruising. Celebrated chefs design innovative menus, while the attentive staff members cater to every whim.

ALL ABOARD

Choose your shipNEVER HAS THERE BEEN MORE SH IPS CRU IS ING THE

WORLD ’S WATERWAYS THAN THERE I S NOW

When it comes to ships, there are choices ranging from intimate yacht-like vessels with as few as 50 passengers to massive mega-ships stretching longer than three football fields and carrying more than 6000 people.

Although ships vary greatly in size, they all offer the same ingredients: accommodation, entertainment, activities, great food, attentive service and exciting ports of call.

When choosing your ship, you need to consider:

The number of passengers: Do you want to meet and socialise with lots of people, or would you prefer quiet time with your partner?

The personality of the cruise: Selecting the cruise line that best matches your personality is crucial. So, what kind of cruiser are you?

The kind of service you want: Are you seeking personalised service and an intimate feel, or a resort out at sea?

Location, location, location: Do you want an adventure across the oceans or a meander along a river? Ships come in three principal categories, and are measured in gross registered tonnes (GRT) and by the number of passengers they carry.

Large resort ships1200-6000+ PASSENGERS 90,000-220,000 GRTThink of these cruise ships as resorts at sea, where entertainment, cuisine, social activities, facilities and amenities are plentiful. Large ship cruising offers an extensive range of entertainment and has exciting programs available for all ages and interests. Each day there is something new to do.

Plenty of daytime happenings: Days can be spent working out at the gym, indulging in a spa treatment, taking a cooking class, playing a round of mini-golf, or anything, really. Large ships are perfect for those who like to fill their days, as there is always something to do on the ship.

Evening entertainment: Grand venues, such as casinos and nightclubs, are pumping once nightfall hits.

Children’s activities: If you are travelling with children, large ships are well suited due to the extent of children’s programs offered on board.

Privacy: Many ships feature adults-only areas, should you want a bit of peace and quiet.

Food: There is an amazing selection of restaurants and dining – from 24-hour room service to smorgasbord buffets and formal five-course dinners.

If you are seeking an intimate cruise experience with personalised service, a small ship holiday will probably suit you best. With small ship cruising, you could find yourself on the deck of some of the world’s most exclusive ships – think coastal vessels, river cruise ships, sailing ships or expedition ships that take you on nature-based journeys to Antarctica and along the Amazon, for example.

Mid-size ships Boutique & river ships

Superior access: Mid-size ships are very well suited to smaller ports, due to their ease of manoeuvrability. This allows many cruise lines to operate itineraries that aren’t accessible to large or boutique ships, such as some around-the-world cruises and longer journeys that take in many exotic locales.

Happy medium: Neither too big nor too small, the size and facilities of these ships generally strike a happy

balance. You can easily find your way around, and there is still a range of activities and excursions to participate in.

Full of variety: While mid-size ships don’t offer as wide a range of facilities as those offered on large ships, they do offer a greater variety than small ships – more than enough to keep everyone entertained, particularly when taking into account the ratio of passenger numbers to facilities.

500-1200 PASSENGERS 30,000-90,000 GRTSomewhere between larger resort-style ships and small ships, mid-size ships tend to offer a premium cruise experience. You can easily find your way around, and there is still a range of activities and excursions to participate in.

BENEFITS INCLUDE:

50-500 PASSENGERS 5000-30,000 GRT

Relaxation: If you enjoy a quiet, relaxed cruising experience with fewer passengers, facilities, entertainment and dining options than large ships, this will be ideal.

Unique experiences: Boutique and small ship cruising is perfect for those looking for a more unique adventure or an educational

journey that provides a rather intimate ambience, often with expert speakers on board.

Access to off-the-beaten-track ports: Large ships generally aren’t able to access every port. Small ship cruising allows you to experience culturally rich and unique destinations, with exclusivity in your shore excursions.

If you’re working with a budget, the cabins located in the internal section of the ship are the least expensive and, depending on the ship, they may even have windows looking into the atrium. These cabins are ideal for passengers who intend on being out and about a lot and don’t mind not having a view. Talk to your travel consultant about the price difference between an inside and outside cabin, as the difference may be quite small.

Generally, outside cabins are almost identical in size and inclusions as inside cabins, with the only difference being the sealed window or porthole to the ocean, offering natural light into the cabin. Porthole cabins are on the lower decks and are generally the least expensive in this category. Most modern ships have large picture windows rather than portholes, but these windows may not be opened, so if you’d like a sea breeze in your room, you’ll need a balcony cabin.

The balcony cabin is the next step up from outside cabins, generally offering the same amenities but with the added advantage of sliding glass doors that are designed to give you access to the outside world – which allows more space to sit and enjoy the view, dine in your room or even have a massage in your cabin. Chat to your consultant about the price of a balcony cabin, as it sometimes won’t cost you much more than an outside cabin.

If you want to travel in true luxury, there is a range of options that offer more space and facilities than other cabin categories, encompassing suites, penthouses and villas. These luxury cabins come in all shapes, sizes and locations. Some have private balconies, others offer interconnecting cabins for families and may accommodate groups of up to 14 passengers. Spa cabins are another plush option – these suites offer direct access to the ship’s spa facilities.

Q & A

Need to knowYOU ’VE GOT YOUR SH IP AND CAB IN SORTED AND YOU KNOW WHERE YOU ARE GOING . A FEW MORE KEY DETA ILS AND I T ’S SA IL ING T IME ! WE ’VE

ANSWERED SOME COMMON QUEST IONS TO HELP GET YOU ON YOUR WAY…

How do I get to the port to join my ship?

In most instances, the cruise line will offer seat-in-vehicle transfers from the airport to join your ship if your flights arrive and depart on the same day as the cruise. It’s best to pre-book this in advance, as some ports have traffic restrictions, and taxis may not have access to the shipside.

Do I need a passport?

Yes. Most cruises dock in foreign countries, so in order to explore these fascinating places, you will require a passport. Make sure it’ll still be valid for at least six months from the date you board, or you may miss the boat… literally.

Are there medical facilities on the ship? Most ships travel with a doctor and registered nurse on board. They will also have reasonable medical facilities to handle emergency situations, though these may be limited on smaller ships.

Can I get my laundry done on a cruise?

Most cruise ships offer full laundry and dry cleaning services, which can be billed to your onboard account. Some cruise liners also provide facilities, such as self-service washers, dryers and irons, either complimentary or for a nominal fee, for guests to use.

What are the onboard dress codes?

There are three distinct types of dress codes: casual, smart casual and formal.Suggested guidelines are as follows:

Casual: Sport shirts and slacks for men, sundresses or pants for women.

Smart casual: Jackets for men and dresses and/or dress pants for women.

Formal: Suits and ties or tuxedos for men, cocktail dresses or evening gowns for women.

Do I need to tip people on my cruise?

It is customary to tip staff members on the majority of ships. If tips are not included in your cruise price, you will receive an envelope in your cabin on the last day of the cruise, or, as a convenience, some cruise lines will automatically charge it to your cabin. On the other hand, some cruise lines have a no-tipping policy. Ask your travel consultant for guidance.

How do I get ashore?Usually the ship will dock at the port and you will leave by the gangway (as you do when you embark). At some ports, however, you will anchor a little way out from the shore and be taken in by tender.

Begin with a cocktail at one of the bars before dinner – but don’t miss the evening’s performance in the Show Lounge. If you prefer, try your luck at roulette or take in a movie at the Theatre. Or simply dance the night away.

Activities Silversea offers many stimulating activities to discover on board your all-inclusive cruise. An enrichment program of the highest calibre offers wine tastings, cooking demonstrations and lectures by eminent guest speakers. Exceptional shore excursions provide meaningful and authentic travel experiences.
