Data Description

This report contains a record of data collected during cruise S-205 aboard the SSV Robert C. Seamans in May and June 2006. This cruise represented the second phase of SEA’s Sea Semester program in which undergraduate students are given the opportunity to conduct research in a practical laboratory environment while at sea. Each student in class S-205 took part in designing an individual research project that helped to define our sampling program. Our cruise track (Fig. 1) transected the Northeast Pacific between Hawaii and Seattle, WA and, in the process, crossed several major oceanographic provinces and boundaries including: the Subtropical Convergence Zone, the West Wind Drift, the Subarctic Transition Zone, the Gulf of Alaska, and the Alaskan Current. Student projects focused on observing changes in the physics, chemistry, and biology of the Pacific across these regions (Table 1).

Samples and data were collected from 85 oceanographic deployments at 54 discrete stations over the course of the cruise. We also continuously sampled for water depth, sub-bottom acoustic profiles, acoustic doppler current profiles (ADCP), and flow-through sea surface temperature, salinity and in-vivo fluorescence data. The bulk of the sampling was done during the first and longest leg of the trip which took us from Oahu, HI to the small town of Tahsis on the northwest coast of Vancouver Is. During the first half of this leg we sailed mostly north or northeast before making a more easterly course change at approximately 43º North latitude. The physical properties of the water column are summarized in two hydrographic sections (Figs. 2-3) that show the S-N and E-W sections of this leg respectively. All oceanographic station locations are given in Table 2. The chemical properties of the surface water along our cruise track are summarized in Table 3 and the chemical properties of the water column in Table 4. Zooplankton data from our surface Neuston Net tows are summarized in Table 5. The extended CTD, CHIRP, ADCP and flow-through data are not reported here but all unpublished data can be made available by arrangement with the SEA archivist upon request (contact information, p.2). The information contained in this report is not intended to represent final interpretation of the data and should not be excerpted or cited without written permission from SEA. Finally, I would like to extend a very heartfelt thanks to the students and crew of S-205 for making this such a successful and rewarding trip. It was truly a pleasure to sail with all of you. Whitley Saumweber Chief Scientist S-205
