The Sanderson Bros. Works of the CRUCIBLE STEEL COMPANY OF AMERICA are located at Syracuse, in the State of New York, United States of America. Syracuse is one of the largl! cities of the State, on the great Trunk Lines of the New York Central & Hudson River Railroad, the tracks of which extend from the Atlantic Ocean at New Y·rk City-with connections covering all New England on t!te East-to Chicago and the great cities of the West.

The Delaware, Lackawana & Western Trunk Line brings the city within easy reach of the great anthracite coal fields of Pennsylvania, while the Erie Canal affords water transportation to and from the Great Lakes.

Thriving manufacturing cities and towns in every direction afford markets for the prqducts, which, however, are shipped to all parts of the country and the world.

WHEN ORDERING ALWAYS SPECIFY THE PURPOSE FOR

INTRODUCTION

THE Sanderson Bros. Steel Works were originally an American

extension of the Sheffield Works of the same name, which

were established in 1776. 'The Works at Syracuse wre built in

1876, but were destroyed by fire in 1887, being rebuilt the follow

ing year with double the former capacity.

They have been under the present corporate ownership and

management since 1900.

Operated for a time under methods in vogue in Europe, the

Sanderson Works have felt the American touch and impetus, and

while holding fast to old and tried processes, have had incorporat

ed with these such newer practice as experience has found to be

of advantage; thus it is but candor to say that the Works were

never more efficient than at the present time.

Like the other PRODUCTIVE DEPARTMENTS of the CRUCIBLE

S'l'EEL CoMPANY OF AMERICA, these Works are self-contained and

turn out a product of the highest quality in various forms.

These are recommended to the steel-consuming public under

the Sanderson axiom, so often stated that "It pays to use

the most reliable Tool Steel in the market."

DESCR,IPTION, USES AND SUGGESTIONS F OR

TREATMENT

A BOUT twelve years ago a distinctive and significant advance in the steel-making art was achieved when the

Crucible Steel Company of America produced " REx" HIGH SPEED STEEL.

It is scarcely necessary at this time to state the advantages of " REx" HIGH SPEED STEEL in economy of costs and general efficiency since its extensive use has made its merits so well known, yet it may be pointed out that as the use of HIGH SPEED STEEL developed, the quality of "REx" has been improved, the result being that to-day this STEEL is the accepted standard-the acknowledged leader among HIGH SPEED STEELS.

As time progressed new adaptations and uses were found for this STEEL, and we venture the opinion that the user of HIGH SPEED STEEL will find the suggestions in this catalogue of interest and profit.

SUGGESTIONS FOR TREATMENT OF OUR HIGH SPEED STEEL

CUTI'ING.-In cutting tool from the bar, cuttin may be done either hot or cold. If cut cold, it should be done w1th a saw. (Should not be nicked and broken when cold.) If cut hot, heat thorouhly and uniformly to a bright yellow heat. Use a sharp ch1sel and cut entirely through.

FORGING.-Heating may be done in an open fire or furnace, care should be taken to have plenty of fuel and to avoid excessive blast. Heat thoroughly and uniformly to a yellow heat, or te> a point where the steel is plastic and moves freely under the hammer. Give the steel plenty of time in the fire in heating, te> insure heats being thorough. Do not attempt to forge at low heats or what is spoken of as Cherry Red.

Owing to the density and nature of High Speed Steel, lt possesses what is known as red hardness, it does not work freely under the hammer at Cherry Red heats, and work put on the steel at these heats results in forging strains and subsequent breakage.

Reheat as often as is necessary to fully shape the tool. It is good practice when the tool is forged to lay it aside in a dry place and permit to cool naturally.

If it is the Tool Maker's practice to rough grind beforehardening, a free cutting wheel should be used.

HARDENING.-In heating the tool to harden, heat the nose or cutting portion of tool in a gooti dean fire, using no more blast than necessary to attain the heat desired until the cutting portion is covered with natural flux from the steel, similar in appearance to bubbling molten borax, as in making a weld. When satisfied that the tool has been thoroughly and properly heated, place the nose or cutting portion of tool in a blast of air to cool, or quench in oil as may be desired.

It is our experience that High Speed Steel is more safely worked and just as satisfactorily, by cooling in a dry air blast as ·when quenched in oil.

. GaiNDING. -Grinding may be done on a wet or dry wheel as suits the operator. Care should be taken, however, to avoid generating too much grinding or friction heat by using undue pressure on the wheel, or sufficient to cause the steel to turn blue in spots, as this will set up strains which will result in grinding cracks, and weaken the tool and cause breakage.

Keep tool as cool as possible in grinding operation. U se a free cutting wheel.

HA RDE NI NG A NNEALED HIGH SP EED STE EL FO R FO RM ED TooLs.-In the hardening of tools formed from Annealed Steel, it is difficult to give explicit instructions covering the various forms of tools in our limited space. We would much prefer to deal with each case individually, when we can give suitable instructions which will be applicable to the conditions as found in the operator's shop.

A NNEALI NG.-In annealing High Speed Steel, use an iron box or pipe of sufficient size to allow at least inch of packing between the piece of steel to be annealed and the walls of the container Pack carefully with powdered charcoal or fine dry lime or mica. Cover with cap, which should be airtight, or if it is not, lute on with fire-clay. Heat slowly to a full red heat, about 1475 to 15 00 degrees Fahrenheit, and hold at this heat from two to eight hours, depending on the size of the piece to be annealed. A piece ix1x8 inches requires about three hours time. Cool as slowly as possible and do not expose to the air until cold. A good way is to allow the box or pipe to remain in the furnace until cold.

Sanderson's Double Special is an invaluable steel for cutting extremely hard metals, such as Chilled Iron, High Carbon Tempered Steels, etc., and we especially recommend it for Forming and Cut-off Tools, Taps, Reamers, Finishing Tools on Brass, Bronze and Copper, and all kinds of Tools for Automatic Screw Machine Work. For turning Chilled Rolls, Chilled Iron of all

-descriptions, or any excessively hard material, it is the best FINISHING steel that can be obtained, but must not be run at very high speeds, as it is not in any sense a high speed steel, and loses its temper when heated in the stress of service, just the same as regular carbon tool steel.

It Is the hardest grade of tempering tool steel known, being harder than High Speed Steel or Self-Hardening Steel, and will malCe finishing cuts on material that neither of these other steels -could be used on successfully, provided it is run at a low speed.

Double Special has the property of retaining an extremely harp cutting edge, and on this account is especially suited for 'finishing tools of all kinds. In addition to being extremely hard, and therefore dense, it has also the great advantage of toughness combined with its hardness.

In a word, it is primarily a keen-cutting steel, and wherever a

tine finish is required, or extreme hardness of metal to be overcome., Double Sj1ecial will show its strongest points to advantage_ For Automatic Screw Machine Taps and some similar purposes, we supply at a moderate advance in price, CoLD DRAWN Double Special, in sizes as required.

Double Special should be hardened from an even heat between dull red and bright red, 1450 to 1500 degrees Fahrenheit, in warm or lukewarm water, and used at full hardness or with the temper drawn only enough to remove hardening strains.

SANDERsoN' SEU'-HARDENING TooL STEEL

For Lathe, Planer, Slotting and Boring Tools, etc., and for General Work. A standard grade of Self-Hardening Steel. Hardens naturally by simply forging and laying aside to cool. 1

SANDERSON's ANNEALED SELF-HARDENING TooL STEEL

Suitable for Bolt Dies, for Hot Work and for some Special Tools.

After cutting to shape, this steel needs only to be heated to a bright red, then allowed to cool in the air, to regain its hardness, the danger of los by cracking in water to which ordinary steels are subject, being entirely avoided. This steel should be orderd t least Ys-inch over size and the surface carefully turned off before hardening. Is machinable but not as soft as Carbon Tool Steel.

SANDERSON'S "MILD" SELF-HARDENING TOOL STEEL

Especiall} recommended for Nail Knives and Dies, Etc.

SANDERSON's "PARAGON" OIL-HARDENING

TooL STEEL

This steel is especially fitted for Gauges, Plugs, Dies, Forming Tools, Cutters, Taps, Reamers, etc., where change of sha;pt and dimensions in hardening is to be avoided. It is furnished m

the annealed condition and machines readily, but not so easily as ordinary tool steel. It should be hardened in oil, and when properly handled, shows the minimum of contraction and expansion and REMAINS PRACTIC.o\.LLY UNCHANGED IN SHAPE AND DIMENSIONS. Special directions for treatment will be furnished promptly upon application.

DIRECTIONS FOR WORKING

SANDERSON's TEMPERING TooL STEELS

Sanderson's Tempering Steels possess the rare quality of not being oversensitive, and can, therefore, be worked by any good blacksmith or tool dresser, without more than general instructions on our part.

For Forging, use a fairly good heat and do not hammer too cold. For hardening, use a low, even heat, and do not allow any portion of the ork to get hotter than the temperature at which it is to be hardened.

Harden at the lowest heat at which the steel will become sufficiently hard. Draw the temper slowly.

ALL ANNEALED TooL STEEL SHOULD BE ORDERED SuFFIC

IENTLY OVER FINISHED SIZES TO ALLOW COMPLETE REMOVAL

OF DECARBONIZED SURFACE CAUSED BY ANNEALING, AS OTHER·

WISE STEEL WILL NOT HARDEN PROPERLY.

TEMPERS

The "Temper" numbers given on this and following pages have no relation to the quality of the steel, and indicate only theC ARBO N C oNT ENT or hardness of the steel. The several "Grades': or "Brands" refer to the standard of quality.

Sanderson's grades of tool steel, "Special," " Extra," "Peerless. Extra" and "Crucible Tool Steel," are each supplied in eight different tempers. (See list following. )

Double Special is made. in only a few high tempers, and the selection of the proper temper for the purpose required should be left to our judgment. Therefore, when ordering, the purpose should always be s.pecified.

No. 6 is the highest or hardest temper; No. 2 the lowest or mildest. Tempers Nos. 6 to 4 harden in oil only in smalr sections. All the tempers harden in water or brine, but we recommend p!Jre water except in special cases.

For the convenience of our customers, Ev ERY BAR of our steel is stamped in the center and at both ends with a number corresponding to the number given on this and the following page.

ANNEALING

Annealed, per pound extra . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. · · · ·

A piece of steel which has been properly annealed should show a finer grain than the unannealed bar.

The steel should be heated slowly and uniformly without coming in direct contact with the fire. The best temperature lor perfect annealing can only be learned by experience.

If the steel is long exposed to a high temperature it will assume a coarse, crystalline structure, and its toughness and strength will be greatly impaired.

The steel manufacturer has the best facilities for this kind <lf work, and should, on account of his knowledge of the nature of the material, be well qualified to obtain the best results. Therefore, when possible, we strongly recommend the practice of having the steel annealed at our Works.

Our regular annealing is most suitable for general work, such as making Taps, Dies, Reamers, etc., but in some cases, where steel is to be used for making Taps, we furnish it "Half Annealed, " and although it does not cut quite so freely, yet it will work up very nice and smooth, and will not tear.

EFFECTS OF HEAT IN HARDENING

The illustrations on following page are reproductions from vieces of CARBON T EM P ER ST EEL to show the grain.

The pieces were all taken from the same bar. The upper group shows the grain unhardened just as the steel left the rolls or hammer.

The other groups wece heated, .and hardened in water.

The middle group shows the grain hardened and "refined' by heating to a red heat, slightly above dull red.

This is the ideal condition which should be sought by tlle Tool Hardener for all cutting tools. Note the fine, dense, flint-like structure, calculated to hold a strong, keen, cutting edge.

The lower group, marked "Burnt," was hardened at a much higher heat; but between the refined and the burnt specimens intermediate heats would each produce a condition of grain corresponding to whatever heat was given, and all would be too coarse (and weak) for cutting tools.

We endeavor to show a few intermediate heats on page 84

under the title "Uneven Heating. "

EFFECTS OF UNEVEN HEATING

The effects of uneven heating on carbon steel in hardening are shown below.

A flat piece of steel was routed in a planer lengthwise through the center so that after being treated it could be broken along that line to expose the grain.

It was then heated in an open forge fire of medium size, the upper end of the piece being placed so as to receive the blast from the tuyere, or inlet pipe, while the main body of the piece received various intermediate heats according to the iJ;JtenSity of the fire at various points, ending in a black-hot heat at the edge of the fire, by conduction.

It was then plunged in a cold water bath. Note the crack which almost invariably occurs in uneven heating, and note, also, the varying grain corresponding to each degree of heat.

The proper grain for cutting tools is shown by the arrow, and can be produced by the Tool Hardener at low and even heat.

FoRGED RINGs

MonE oF CoMPUTING PRICE

Rings carry the same extras for weight as solid discs, and also an ej(tra charge of 8 cents per pound for labor in cutting holes together with an extra, figured by the following rule, to cove; the loss of steel in making the ring from a solid disc.

R,ULE-Div!de rap (the wight ?f p!ece cut out to form hole) by we1ght of sohd d1sc from wh1ch nng 1s made, which will give the per cent of loss of STEEL .

Divide the base price by a figure represented by 100, less the per cent of loss, the result being the base price for the given ring, plus the extra for loss of steel.

. NoTE-:-I n .figuring the per cent of loss in cutting holes in d1scs, bear m mmd that the per cent of loss of steel is not tile per cent of loss on the base price, as the following example will show:

RULES To find the area of a triangle, multiply the base by one-half

of the perpendicular height.

To find the area of a trapezoid, add the two parallel sides together and multiply the sum by half of the perpendicular distance between them.

I \

To find the area of a regular octagon, multiply the square of the diameter of the inscribed circle by the decimal . SiS.

To find the area of a regular hexagon, multiply the square of the diameter of the inscribed circle by the decimal .S66.

To find the area of a circle, multiply the square of the diameter by the decimal .7854.

To find the area of the section of a flat bar, or the area of a rectangle, multiply the width by the thickness.

To find the number of cubic inches in any bar, multiply the area of its section in inches by its length in inches.

Having the number of cubic inches in any bar, to find its weight in steel, multiply by the decimal .'li5, if exact theoretical weight is desired ; or multiply by .8, if a practical weight, such as you are likely to get, is wanted. For the weight of wrought iron, multiply the cubic inches by .iS. For the weight of cast iron, multiply the cubic inches by .26.
