It has been a very busy start to the new term, with year 11 already in the midst of their PPEs and year 12/13 starting theirs at the end of January. We hope revision is going well and wish all our students the very best of luck. We all have a duty of care and a social responsibility to ensure the educational environment is a safe and secure place for young people to learn, free from the threat of illegal drugs. We were lucky to be visited by K9 Deployment and the wonderful beagle/spaniel cross, Bruce this week as part of our ongoing work to raise awareness around drugs this term. Tutors will be delivering a programme around ‘drug awareness’ during Wellbeing sessions which will be reinforced through homework set on Doddle. Parents of students in years 7 and 8 will be aware of a cycle awareness scheme which has been arranged in conjunction with Cycle Confident and aims to give students the practical skills to cycle safely and with confidence to and from the academy. Crown Flyer 17th January 2020

We hope everyone had a wonderful break.

Behaviour has continued to improve within the academy and we take this opportunity to remind parents/carers and students of our high expectations and thank you for your support in upholding these.

Dates for the course are as follows and students will be notified which group they are in: -

BBC Young Reporter - Student Voice When I was first offered the opportunity to attend the BBC Young Reporters event, I was unsure and questioned whether I really wanted to go. However I did eventually take the spot as my English teacher Mr Stephenson was able to persuade me.I made the right choice! The young Reporters Day was a fantastic event held by members of the BBC. We completed various activities and learnt some very important and helpful skills. The first activity my group and I attended was a lecture about real vs fake news. It was a great lecture and taught me a lot about the media and how easy it is to manipulate things in the news nowadays.Secondly, we filmed and edited our own 60 second news clip. This was very fun and quite a challenge. It taught me that in the news industry, there really isn’t much time for worry. You have to be confident and upfront.Lastly, we created our own 2 minute radio podcast on the ipads. This was my favourite activity and we did very well. I would honestly recommend this to anybody that wants a fun day out.Thank you very much BBC and Leigh Academy.Ediz Year 9

Today, me and a selection of other students from SCWA participated in the BBC Young Reporter activity. This was an activity that I didn’t want to do, but my mum made me and now I really enjoyed it. This is particularly an activity that would interest Media and Film Studies students, due to you learning how to film a news report and recognise fake news. However, I believe that everyone should be given the chance to do this as it is very insightful and interesting. You get to meet people who work for the BBC and ask them questions like: “Have you interviewed many famous people” or “What inspired you to be a reporter”. These people also give amazing advice on how to make it in the Media Industry. The Young Reporter scheme is amazing and very interesting. Overall, this was a great experience that every interesting person should enjoy. If you are ever given the opportunity… please do it!Ashi Year 9

The BBC Young Reporter trip involved a carousel of different activities that allowed the students to get involved with different tasks that reflected what they might do in a career in the media. Students were trained on the use of audio and video recording and editing software, and had to make short news reports using these tools. They also had an engaging session on identifying fake news, and the students really got involved with their own knowledge of deep fake videos and evaluated what problems these could cause in the future. Pupils enjoyed bringing their own knowledge to expand discussions with the BBC journalists and it was great to see that pupils were criti-cal as well as complimentary.

Pupils wrote their reflection of the trip, a sample of their reports are below:

Today at the BBC I learnt how to spot fake news, how to be careful of deep fakes/bots. We also learnt fragments of how a day-to-day job is working behind the scenes, and on camera, at the BBC. In our first workshop I was surprised at how much dedication the journalist had to find out whether her story was real. I was also shocked at how hard it is to produce and edit a news report in such a small amount of time. As someone that is interested in being a Journalist, I found the tips of the people there very interesting and confidence-boosting. It was very fun and enjoyable using the iPads and technology to produce various types of things needed for media in not only the BBC but other broadcasting corporations like ITV and Channel 4. The people that worked in the company were very kind and helpful and used as much information as possible to help us in our future career paths and all in all I found this event fun and as useful as possible. I am grateful for the opportunity. Marley Year 9

I enjoyed today because I learnt a lot about fake news and how to tell the difference between something that is real news or fake. I also learnt how to use imovie and other software products to edit films and radio shows. Samuel Year 9

On the 14th of January 2020, I attended the BBC young news reporters event held at Leigh Academy in Dartford. We were first gathered in the schools lecture theatre and then put into groups to study each segment of the tour. Then we were gathered into a classroom and met a BBC journalist called Allison, she taught us about fake and real news and how to spot it. After that we went back to the lecture theatre to film and edit a 60 second report on anything we liked. My group decided to talk about the plastic bag ban in Thailand. After that we had a Q and A with three radio presenters and asked them how their career started, etc. Rebecca Year 9
