ENTRY CROSSOVER MARKET

Over time, many compact SUVs have grown in size and sophistication. This evolution has created the space for a new entry crossover market, which is sometimes called the subcompact crossover market. Almost every manufacturer has produced, announced or is considering an entry crossover.

Compact SUV• Honda CR-V

• Subaru Forester

• Nissan Rogue

• Mitsubishi Outlander

• Chevrolet Equinox

• Jeep Cherokee

• Mazda CX-5

Subcompact Crossover• Honda HR-V

• Subaru XV Crosstrek

• Nissan Juke

• Mitsubishi Outlander Sport

• Chevrolet Trax

• Jeep Renegade

• Mazda CX-3

• Fiat 500X

As the maker of the best-selling compact SUV of all time, the CR-V, Honda is in the unique position of being able to define what the entry crossover market will be with the launch of the all-new HR-V Crossover.

Honda HR-V | Market and Buyers10

The HR-V Crossover is aimed at buyers who are active achievers with a dynamic lifestyle and in need of a vehicle that can keep up. They want versatility for a wide variety of pursuits. They need the latest technology to allow them to stay connected with their world while on the go. And they demand exceptional value and fuel efficiency.

While these buyers are defined more by their life style than their life stage, the primary buyers are from Generation Y and will need the HR-V as their main vehicle, while the secondary or consumption buyers are from Generation X or trailing-edge Baby Boomers and will need the HR-V as an additional vehicle.

HR-V TARGET BUYERS

Market and Buyers | Honda HR-V 11

Almost every customer enters the purchase process with a mixture of buyer motivations. Almost always those motivations are not equal. There are usually must-haves and nice-to-haves.

Many times buyers may not be clear on what their motivations are. Your role is to discover and clarify what is most important to each customer and help deliver the value that Honda products provide.

With the HR-V, buyers will often be motivated by one or more of the HR-V’s key selling points: Styling, Technology, Performance, Comfort and Safety.

During a thorough needs assessment, you can identify what is most important to each customer with the goal of personalizing the buying process. A thorough needs assessment starts with customer-oriented questions, continues with current-vehicle questions and then focuses in with new-vehicle questions and drill-down questions.

Customer-Oriented QuestionsStart your needs assessment with customer-oriented questions. For example:

• What brings you into our dealership today?

• What do you know about Honda?

• What research have you done so far?

• Tell me about your typical driving day.

• What has changed for you since your last purchase?

Current-Vehicle QuestionsContinue your needs assessment with current-vehicle questions. For example:

• Are you adding or replacing a vehicle?

• What do you like about your current vehicle?

• What would you change about your current vehicle?

NEEDS ASSESSMENT

Honda HR-V | Market and Buyers12

New-Vehicle QuestionsFocus your needs assessment with new-vehicle questions. For example:

• What are the must-have features in your next vehicle?

• What are the nice-to-have features in your next vehicle?

• Do you have a particular model in mind?

Drill-Down QuestionsDrill down with competitor or crossover questions, as needed. For example:

• What other vehicles are you considering?

• What do you like about these other vehicles?

• What do you not like about these other vehicles?

• When might you need all-wheel drive?

• How many passengers do you need to carry?

• What type of cargo do you need to carry?

• What might you need to tow?

POSITION ZERO: APPROACHING THE HR-V

The HR-V Crossover is packed with advanced technology and convenience features, delivers exceptional utility and is remarkably fun to drive. It offers drivers superior ride and handling in a sophisticated, comfortable and functional package.

Sporty, Coupe-Like StyleStyling• The HR-V projects a leading-edge appearance from every angle. Sleek,

flowing shapes combine with prominent character lines to provide an entirely new and unique look.

• The front-end styling imparts a feeling of bold strength. Its wide stance gives it a sense of solidity. And an angular profile with smoothly integrated rear door handles gives the impression of motion even when it’s standing still.

Honda HR-V | Opening Session16

POSITION ONE: FRONT OF THE HR-V

Aerodynamic DesignStyling• Highly efficient, the aerodynamic

design provides exceptional fuel efficiency and cuts wind noise for a quieter ride.

Exterior ColorsStyling• A total of eight stylish exterior colors

help the HR-V express its youthful appeal and intelligent design and functionality.

• Three are unique to the HR-V and new to the Honda lineup: Mulberry Metallic, Deep Ocean Pearl and Misty Green Pearl.

• For the best overall HR-V appearance, certain colors are exclusively coordinated with a Gray or Black interior.

Features and Technology | Honda HR-V 17

1.8-Liter, SOHC i-VTEC® 4-Cylinder EnginePerformance• This Civic-based engine utilizes numerous compact, rigid, lightweight and

low-friction engine technologies to achieve strong performance and excellent fuel efficiency.

• The 1.8-liter engine uses a variation of Honda’s innovative i-VTEC® system, operating one intake valve at low engine speeds and both intake valves at high engine speeds.

Honda HR-V | Features and Technology18

6-Speed Manual Transmission (6MT)Performance• To provide driving enthusiasts with exceptional control and feel, the HR-V has

a standard close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission that is related to the unit offered in Accord 4-cylinder models.

• This next-generation transmission is compact and lightweight, while being quiet and fuel-efficient with smooth and easy shifting.

Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT)Performance• The HR-V’s available continuously variable transmission, from the Honda Earth

Dreams Technology™ powertrain series, is related to the CVT in the Civic and the CR-V.

• This CVT has a wider ratio spread than many automatic transmissions, resulting in improved acceleration response at low speeds, reduced engine speeds at higher road speeds and greater overall fuel efficiency.

• The G-Design Shift feature bypasses the excessive engine revving that is characteristic of conventional CVTs through improved pairing of CVT and torque converter functions.

• The result is an optimized CVT driving experience that is more linear and sporty than competitive CVTs.

POSITION ONE: FRONT OF THE HR-V

Features and Technology | Honda HR-V 19

Amplitude Reactive DampersPerformance• The HR-V uses extremely sophisticated dampers that are often only found on

luxury vehicles. These dampers have a second piston valve, enabling them to provide the right damping force for the driving condition.

• For example, road bumps will trigger lower damping forces for a more compliant ride quality, while tight cornering will produce higher damping forces for sportier turning with less body roll.

• Owners benefit from dampers that are secure and tight feeling in corners, yet smooth and supple when cruising, for greater ride comfort.

Wheels and TiresStyling, Performance• All HR-V models ride on 17-inch

aluminum alloy wheels with 215/55R17 all-season tires.

• The wheels feature a distinctive 5-spoke design that complements the new body design.

• The all-season tire specifications enable confident all-weather and multi-surface driving while also contributing to excellent road holding and ride quality, and low interior noise levels.

POSITION ONE: FRONT OF THE HR-V

Honda HR-V | Features and Technology20

Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) Body StructureSafety• Utilizing Honda’s next-generation Advanced Compatibility Engineering™

(ACE™) body structure, the HR-V uses high-strength steel and advanced manufacturing techniques to achieve a highly rigid body structure that benefits ride, handling, durability and safety.

• This version of the ACE™ body structure was designed to increase energy absorption in small overlap frontal collisions.

• Ultra-high-strength steel is an essential part of the HR-V’s construction, with 27% of the body structure using these advanced materials.

• The HR-V is targeted to receive a 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score from the NHTSA as well as a TOP SAFETY PICK rating from the IIHS.

Folding Power Side MirrorsComfort• The shape of the standard

2-tone, black and color-matched side mirrors complement the HR-V’s exterior styling and were specifically designed for low aerodynamic drag to improve fuel efficiency while reducing wind noise.

• In addition, the EX and EX-L Navi feature heated mirrors for all-weather driving convenience and include integrated LED turn indicators for added visibility in traffic.

Expanded View Driver’s MirrorSafety• All HR-V models are equipped with a driver’s side mirror that expands the

driver’s field of vision to provide a better view of objects to the rear and side of the vehicle.

• Optically curved at its outer edge, the mirror helps the driver see vehicles that might be in the blind spot on the driver’s side of the vehicle, which is especially helpful when changing lanes.

POSITION ONE: FRONT OF THE HR-V

Features and Technology | Honda HR-V 21

Available Real Time AWD with Intelligent Control System™Performance• For drivers who desire the four-season

confidence of all-wheel drive, Real Time AWD™ provides a high degree of all-wheel-drive sophistication in rain and snow, and on dirt roads and dry pavement.

• Unique programming in the HR-V’s AWD system is aimed at enhancing performance on snow-covered surfaces by sending more power to the rear wheels to reduce front wheel spin.

• Real Time AWD with Intelligent Control System™ offers the optimal balance of confident capability and user-friendliness in a lightweight and fuel-efficient design.

• The driver can simply step on the accelerator and let the system maximize use of available grip and climbing capability.

POSITION TWO: REAR OF THE HR-V

Honda HR-V | Features and Technology22

Lightweight TailgateComfort• The HR-V’s manual tailgate features twin gas-

charged hydraulic struts that ease opening and a single pull-down handle located on the right side.

• A 360-degree seal surrounds the tailgate opening for a tight seal against the intrusion of water, dirt and wind noise.

• The tailgate opening dimensions are generous, allowing easy stowing of large or bulky items, including mountain bikes, which can be stored vertically with their front wheels removed.

Cargo AreaComfort• Inside is a spacious 58.8 cubic feet of total storage space (LX FWD with

2nd-row seat folded down) complemented by a flat floor that simplifies and improves the HR-V’s cargo-carrying utility.

• The storage area is nicely trimmed in high-quality carpeting that matches the HR-V’s passenger compartment.

• Two chrome tie-down rings are positioned at the front of the storage area, which is illuminated by a light positioned at the left side of the opening.

• A retractable cargo area cover provides a visual screen to hide cargo left in the vehicle when parked.

Roof Rails (EX-L Navi)Styling, Comfort• Designed for low aerodynamic drag and turbulence, the rails extend from just

behind the windshield all the way to the C-pillar, conforming to the graceful arch of the HR-V’s roofline.

• Each rail has four anchor points for attaching accessory crossbars, an accessory roof box, or ski, snowboard or bike attachment.

POSITION TWO: REAR OF THE HR-V

Features and Technology | Honda HR-V 23

2nd-Row Magic Seat®Comfort• The 60/40 split 2nd-row Magic

Seat® can be configured in numerous ways to adapt instantly to a wide variety of circumstances and needs.

• Utility Mode allows for maximum cargo capacity, up to 58.8 cubic feet. The seat can easily be folded with levers accessible from the rear of the vehicle or the rear doors.

• Tall Mode is useful for items that need to remain upright, such as a large plant. It is also handy for bringing along an uncrated dog, since the side-door entry is even lower than the rear entry of the vehicle. With almost 4 feet from floor to ceiling, the space can even accommodate two mountain bikes with their front wheels removed.

• Long Mode is convenient for carrying items like lumber, a stepladder or recreational items such as a kayak, surfboards or musical instruments. Fold down the rear seat on the passenger’s side and tilt the front passenger’s seat all the way back, and you will have 8 feet of room.

Rearview Camera*Safety, Comfort• All HR-V models receive a multi-view

rear camera, viewable on the LX 5-inch color LCD screen and the EX and EX-L Navi 7-inch Display Audio touch-screen.

• Located on the rear hatch, just below the handle, the camera can show a top view, normal view or wide rear view when the transmission is in reverse gear.

• The LX features static guidelines that help drivers gauge how close they are to an object, while the EX and EX-L Navi have dynamic guidelines that project the vehicle’s future path based on steering wheel inputs.

* Always visually confirm that it is safe to drive before backing up; the rearview camera display does not provide complete information about all conditions and objects at the rear of your vehicle.

POSITION TWO: REAR OF THE HR-V

Honda HR-V | Features and Technology24

Modern Cabin EnvironmentStyling, Comfort• The HR-V’s leading-

edge exterior style is carried into the cabin with contemporary design cues. A carefully designed unity to all the features, surfaces and seams imparts an unmistakable sense of quality.

• As with every Honda, the perfectly positioned switches and controls are impressive in their accessibility, feel and responsiveness.

• The high-deck center console design soars up to the center stack, giving the front row a cockpit feel. A variety of storage spaces let occupants keep their necessities close at hand.

• Fine-looking touches enhance convenience, like one-touch inside driver’s and front-passenger’s door handles that unlock the doors with a single pull. And the signature Honda 2nd-row Magic Seat® offers owners an unmatched level of versatility.

• Extensive sound insulation is used throughout the HR-V, resulting in a quiet and pleasant ride.

POSITION THREE: INSIDE THE HR-V

Features and Technology | Honda HR-V 25

Instrument PanelComfort• The HR-V’s gauges are ideally

positioned for the driver to easily get information at a glance.

• The instrument panel provides Eco Assist™ green ambient lighting on the outside of the analog speedometer and offers additional driver-selectable colors, including white, blue, purple, pink, red, amber and yellow.

• An LCD Multi-Information Display is positioned to the right of the speedometer. The select/reset knob located above the display controls which information appears on the LCD display.

• A tachometer appears to the left of the speedometer, featuring a gear-position indicator on CVT models.

Smart Entry and Push Button Start (EX and EX-L Navi)Comfort• The Smart Entry system allows

the driver to walk up to the vehicle, touch the door handle and open the door, start the engine and shut it off at the end of the trip, and then get out and touch the lock button on the door handle to secure the car—all without ever touching a key.

• Likewise, the driver can open the tailgate with just a touch of the release button located above the license plate—it only requires that the driver possess the key fob.

POSITION THREE: INSIDE THE HR-V

Honda HR-V | Features and Technology26

POSITION THREE: INSIDE THE HR-V

Motion-Adaptive Electric Power SteeringPerformance, Safety• The standard Electric Power Steering (EPS) is a sophisticated system that can

initiate steering inputs that prompt the driver to steer in the correct direction during cornering and in slippery road conditions.

• The EPS consists of a rack-and-pinion steering gear with an electric motor installed concentrically around the steering rack.

• Using vehicle speed and steering angle data, Motion-Adaptive EPS works with Vehicle Stability Assist™ to detect instability in slippery road conditions, both during cornering and under braking, and automatically initiates steering inputs aimed at prompting the driver to steer in the correct direction.

CVT Paddle Shifters (EX and EX-L Navi)Performance, Comfort• The CVT can be controlled with steering wheel-mounted, dual-mode paddle

shifters to provide a more engaging driver experience.

• When the shift lever is in the D position, the paddle shifters can be used to downshift the transmission, such as when descending a steep hill, for greater engine braking. The transmission can be upshifted as well. After a short time, full automatic operation will resume.

• With the shift lever in the S position, the transmission will maintain one of seven selected ratios until the driver operates the paddle shifters, much like a manual transmission. The system will step in only to prevent engine over-revving or lugging.

Features and Technology | Honda HR-V 27

Electric Parking Brake with Automatic Brake HoldPerformance, Comfort• A Honda-first found on the HR-V is the electric

parking brake with automatic brake hold.

• Instead of the traditional hand lever or foot pedal for the parking brake, HR-V owners can simply use the electric parking brake switch to set or release the vehicle’s parking brake.

• After being activated, the automatic brake hold maintains braking pressure when the driver applies the brakes, such as in stop-and-go traffic, and releases the brakes when the driver applies the accelerator.

Air Conditioning with Air FiltrationComfort• The air conditioning system features a wide-flow passenger’s side vent for

more comfortable and uniform ventilation. Adjustable from side to side or up and down, the middle vent has a lower airflow, the outboard vent has a higher airflow and the inboard vent has a medium airflow.

• The system has the ability to quickly heat up or cool down the cabin and is remarkably quiet. Large controls on the LX make operation easy.

• Incoming air passes through a replaceable air filter that can remove particulate matter, such as pollen or dust as small as eight microns (about 10 times smaller than a human hair).

Automatic Climate Control (EX and EX-L Navi)Comfort• Single-zone automatic climate

control maintains a selected temperature for the cabin, no matter how conditions change outside the vehicle.

• The system features the high-tech convenience of touch-screen controls.

POSITION THREE: INSIDE THE HR-V

Honda HR-V | Features and Technology28

POSITION THREE: INSIDE THE HR-V

Advanced Audio SystemsTechnology• The LX is equipped with a 160-watt AM/FM/CD audio system with four

speakers, while the EX and EX-L Navi feature a 180-watt system and add a pair of tweeters.

• The single-disc CD player on all models can read CD-Rs loaded with WMA or MP3 audio files.

• Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® and Bluetooth® streaming audio come on all trim levels, while the EX adds Pandora® compatibility and SMS text message function for select smartphones, and the EX-L Navi adds HD Radio™ and SiriusXM® Radio.

• In the LX, drivers can operate all audio functions via a 5-inch LCD color audio display, while the EX and EX-L Navi feature the 7-inch Display Audio high-resolution touch-screen.

Display Audio with HondaLink® Next Generation (EX and EX-L Navi)Technology• The 7-inch Display Audio with

touch-screen allows interaction with the vehicle’s audio system as well as with select apps on the user’s smartphone to access web content.

• Display Audio with the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System™ on the EX-L Navi combines all familiar navigation system functions with smartphone-like functionality, such as pinching to zoom in and out, and sliding for volume control.

• The connection between the system and the user’s smartphone is made through the USB Audio Interface and the HDMI® Display Audio Interface.

• HondaLink® Next Generation connectivity enables users to download Honda-developed apps and Honda-certified third-party apps to their smartphone for use with Display Audio.

• These apps include access to Aha™, service appointment scheduling at Honda dealerships, location searches, weather information and more.

Features and Technology | Honda HR-V 29

Honda LaneWatch™ (EX and EX-L Navi)*Comfort• Honda LaneWatch™ uses a camera

located below the passenger’s side mirror to display an expanded rear view of the passenger’s side roadway through the Display Audio screen.

• The image appears when the right turn signal is activated or a button on the end of the stalk is pushed.

• The LaneWatch™ display’s field of view is significantly wider than that of a typical passenger’s side mirror, helping the driver to see traffic, as well as pedestrians, bicycles or other objects, in the vehicle’s blind spot.

• To help make judging distance easier, the display has three reference lines.

SmartVent® Front Side AirbagsSafety• In the event of a moderate-to-severe side impact, the SmartVent® front

side airbag is designed to deploy and inflate quickly to maximize potential protection for properly seated occupants.

• SmartVent® front side airbags help to protect the driver’s or front passenger’s upper body from injury, or vent before fully inflating if an occupant is in the side airbag deployment path, thereby decreasing the likelihood of an airbag-related injury.

* Display accuracy will vary based on weather, size of object and speed, and the display may not show all relevant traffic. The display is not a substitute for your own direct visual assessment of traffic conditions before changing lanes.

Nissan JukeLaunched in the 2011 model year and refreshed for 2015, the Juke is a mini SUV with unconventional styling and tight interior dimensions.

The 2015 Nissan Juke is available in S, SV and SL trim levels, with either front-wheel or all-wheel drive. All are equipped with a 1.6-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with a continuously variable transmission.

With a starting MSRP of $20,250 for the S FWD, the Juke tops out with the SL AWD at an MSRP of $26,940.

A large selection of color-coordinated interior and exterior accents and finishers, and the availability of higher performance Nissan Motorsports (NISMO) variants, imply that the Juke is more of a sport hatchback than a true crossover.

Pro Driver PerspectiveDynamically, the Juke feels light and sporty, with ample acceleration, sufficient braking, responsive steering, satisfactory ride and handling, and capable all-wheel drive, but with poor driver visibility.

Subaru XV CrosstrekIntroduced as a 2013 model with minor upgrades through 2015, the Subaru XV Crosstrek is based on a raised-suspension version of the Subaru Impreza hatchback and has styling cues that make it appear more rugged and capable.

The 2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek is available in 2.0i base, Premium and Limited trim levels, with standard all-wheel drive. All are equipped with a 2.0-liter horizontally opposed 4-cylinder engine with a 6-speed manual transmission or continuously variable transmission.

With a starting MSRP of $21,595 for the 2.0i, the Crosstrek peaks at $28,440 for the 2.0i Limited with Moonroof, Navigation, Keyless Access and EyeSight Packages.

The availability of higher priced Hybrid and Hybrid Touring variants suggests that the Crosstrek is more of a small wagon than a true crossover.

Pro Driver PerspectiveDynamically, the Crosstrek’s standard all-wheel-drive performance and handling feels underdeveloped, with lackluster acceleration, average braking and steering, and only adequate ride and handling.

COMPETITIVE STORIES*

Exterior DesignFront End• The HR-V’s solid stance

and powerful front grille convey a bolder, sharper face, compared to the Juke’s unconventional fascia and exterior lights, and the Crosstrek’s wagon-like fascia, which is reminiscent of the Impreza sedan.

Side View• The coupe-like shape of

the HR-V is enhanced by its distinctive side contours, concealed rear door handles and shark fin antenna, while the Juke’s unusual hatchback profile and the Crosstrek’s wagon-like silhouette convey less of a crossover appearance.

• While the HR-V’s thick black finishers on its wheel arches and lower sills add a look of toughness while also helping to protect body panels from damage from road debris, the thinner finishers of the Juke and thinner, irregular finishers of the Crosstrek seem to be more of a subtle styling accent.

• Compared to the bare wheel wells of the Juke and Crosstrek, the flocked wheel wells of the HR-V help deaden intrusive road noise.

Tail End• The HR-V’s wide track and sculpted rear end suggest a more performance-

oriented stance, compared to the rounder and milder lines of the Juke and the taller, squared-off lines of the Crosstrek.

Driver’s CockpitFront Seats• The well-bolstered sport-type

front seats of the HR-V invite more energetic driving, compared to the narrower, more confined seats in the Juke and the flatter seat bottoms and seatbacks in the Crosstrek.

• While the HR-V’s finished seat tracks show quality craftsmanship, the bare and unfinished seat tracks of the Juke and Crosstrek can catch on a driver’s leg.

Dashboard• The HR-V’s dashboard offers an

integrated array of curves and textures, and a more unified appearance of controls, while the Juke’s dashboard is busy and overly styled, and the Crosstrek’s dashboard is utilitarian–and both use fewer textures and a dissimilar collection of buttons and switches.

Cockpit Details• Premium detailing can be seen

throughout the HR-V’s cockpit as evidenced by the 3-meter driver’s instrument cluster with floating illumination rings; convenient audio, video and power ports; and finished sliding sun visors with illuminated vanity mirrors. Comparable details in the Juke and Crosstrek are consistently unrefined.

Center Console• The high-deck center console in the HR-V is a sophisticated blend of form

and function, with a streamlined design, sliding armrest, covered storage compartment, adjustable beverage holders and electric parking brake. In comparison, the Juke’s center console is overly styled and awkward with its fixed accessory armrest, and the Crosstrek’s center console looks dated and cluttered.

COMPETITIVE STORIES

Passenger CabinInterior Space• While the HR-V has a greater

passenger volume than the Juke and Crosstrek, it also makes better use of that space for the comfort and convenience of up to five adults.

Rear Seats• With generous rear legroom,

modern head restraints, reclining rear seat, underseat storage space, and rear center-console beverage holder and power outlet, the HR-V offers rear-seat comforts unmatched by the Juke and Crosstrek.

Nissan Juke

Subaru XV Crosstrek

Honda HR-V | Competitive Comparison 40

Cargo AreaCargo Space• With its wider tailgate opening,

lower liftover height and lower floor height, the HR-V offers more standard and available cargo room than either the Juke or Crosstrek.

Cargo Options• The HR-V’s reconfigurable

2nd-row Magic Seat® offers multiple seating and cargo configurations not available on the Juke or Crosstrek, including Utility, Tall and Long modes.
