    WELCOME

    FUCCHAS

From being mued into thick books

to enduring the traumas of threaten-ing entrance exams, those woeful

days of travail and drudgery come

to an end. As you enter the college

as a fresher, a new and luminous life

awaits you. College is an extraordi-

nary phase of ones life, a pathway

from a school kid to a professional

person. This pathway is the real me

of your lives. Its about taking chal-

    lenges, doing reckless things, experi-

menng and creang a niche for your

interests. And of course, enjoying the

    ride!

    NSIT doesnt only confer you

    with the cacophony of lectures

or arduous exams, but also pro-

vides you with a multude of

    opportunies to explore the real

world. This is the place where you

    can follow your long cherished

    dreams, waing to be realized.

    The key? Take an iniave.

    NSIT, being a disciplined in-

    stuon, leaves no prospects

    for ragging. This comes with

    the disadvantage of lesser

    interacon with seniors and

an overall hosle aura for the

rst few days. But then in nome, you would discover that

    extra dynamism appending

    in to your otherwise monoto-

    nous lives; a cordial interac-

on with not just your class-

    mates but your seniors as

    well. Interacng with seniors

doesnt only align you in that

    stream of merry making, but

    also gets you acquainted with

    the ways of ulizing your

me in the best possible way.

    CROSSLINKS

Your seniors have a lot of knowl-

edge to share with you, so inter-

acon with seniors becomes anecessity. But it doesnt imply that

you have to follow their footsteps

blindly. Make your own path, but

    with some guidance.

    We have umpteen numbers of

sociees in NSIT which grant you

a plaorm to explore and increase

your knowledge, your ideas. On the

very rst day of college, you are

    bombarded with the advantages of

joining each society. The rst year

is relavely a very relaxed year with

a lot of free me. In case you nd

yourself confused, there is no need

to feel lost or get worked up. Join

as many sociees as you can handle

and then narrow down your op-

ons. The next thing that NSITians

will be talking to you about relent-

lessly is the fests -the best part of

ones college life. They add thatextra zing and bizarre exhilaraon

    to the otherwise not-so-happening

life. NSIT is known for its 3 major

    ravishing fests; Resonanz, Innovi-

sion & Moksha. You get to social-

ize the most, during this me.

Ofcourse, working for the fest, for

the college, for the love of it is an

    altogether dierent feeling and

probably the best one too. Fests

just take a new meaning if you vol-

    unteer for them.

All of you must have heard

    highly of NSIT placements, and

    probably that is what brought

you here. But then, your per-

    centage oen becomes a big-

    me spoiler. Generally, 70-75 %

is decent enough to let you sit

    for your dream company. At

    CROSSLINKSNSIT TIMESNSIT TIMES

tending classes would be more than sucient for this and you

dont have to be buried in your books all the me. So, relax and

come out of the cocoon you had ensnared yourself in, through-

out your school li fe. Discover yourself, follow your dreams and

make the best of your college life.

    S EKING AN

    OPPORTUNITY

One thing that a person should keep in

mind: In NSIT, Darwins theory of survival

    fails.

The est may not survive but the most

exible ones do. So it is advisable that

you shake o your rigid atude before

    entering the colleges premises.

Students, especially in the rst year,

are generally indulged in haranguing of

the seniors. They scrounge to take ad-

vices and experiences from all possible

sources. But one thing which they cant

be advised on is an opportunity. More

oen, opportunies ow around us like

a wind. But due to lack of awareness

and the inera of the human mentality,

the opportunies slip from our hands

like sand. And when we become aware,

its oen too late. And mind you, these

opportunies not only help you in your

success path but are also the path seers

for further opportunies. So how do we

stop these opportunies from slippingfrom our hands? What sorts of opportu-

    nies are available on campus?

The basic mantra is to be i ncisive and

alert. Gone are the days when you were

spoon fed in school. Its college. Its me

for you to prepare yourself to face the

real aspects of life and brace yourselves.

There will be more compeon and the

race will be a lot tougher. You are re-

quired to broaden your vision and come

out of the nutshell and let go of all your

    inhibions.

Its me you to start reading the noces and yers on the wall. You pass by them many mes in a

day but hardly bother to look. No one will come and tell you whats happening round the corner.

    Visit the student iniave websites.

Parcipate in events happening in the campus. Volunteer for society work. Working with sociees

and in college fesvals are important plaorms for good senior-junior interacon and exposure. A

healthy senior interacon may or may not land you an opportunity immediately, but it might lead

you to something beer and more fruiul.

Working in a team increases your team oriented approach and enhances you inter personal skills,

which are benecial in the long run.

Keep in mind that unl and unless you take an iniave, you cannot be an achiever.

NSIT will give you ample opportunies; technical, managerial and cultural. Just be alert and have

    the zeal to grab them!

Of course there is a lot of knowledge in the universities:the freshmen bring a little in; the seniors dont take much

away, so knowledge sort of accumulates.

    -Abbot Lawrence Lowell

Stay here for a couple of weeks and you will realize that you can manage a bounful of free me,

especially in the rst year. A relavely comfortable examinaon system leaves us with enough me to

take iniaves. Of course there are lectures to aend and other such academic limitaons, but all those

things are prey manageable once you know what to do, when to do and how to do the right things. And

once again, we stress on the fact that synergizing with your seniors is the best way to get to know all the

know-how. They have the accumulated knowledge passed down from generaons of students passing

out. A good rapport with your seniors can do wonders for you in ways unimaginable.

But as we menoned, the trick is to nd the best possible channel of communicaon. Fortunately there

are a number of clubs and sociees and student run iniaves in NSIT that conduct regular meengs.

These meengs provide the best plaorm for the interacon to take place not only with your sen-

iors but with your fellow freshmen as well.

There is a plethora of sociees to choose from.

Crosslinks is the colleges ocial Media Management Society. NSIT Debang Society, also known

as Debsoc, caters to those who wish to pursue their literary interests in the form of debates and

MUNs. NSIT Quiz Club provides a good plaorm to the inquisive quizzers. The Dramacs Society-

Ashwamedh, The Photography Society-Junoon, The Fine Arts Society-Canvas provide you ample op-

portunies to showcase your creave side and further hone your skills. Then you have the technical

sociees like IEEE and CSI where you can aend workshops, get hands on praccal experience and

develop your technical skills. The Consulng Club is the place to be for people interested in nance

and consulng. For those who believe in social work, there are sociees like Rotaract Club of NSIT

and LFT-NSIT chapter. SIFE NSIT aracts entrepreneurs. If youre interested in designing cars, there is

the Bullethawk society and the NSIT Motorsports which you can join. There are many other inia-

ves like the Collegespace, Nsitonline, Nsit Campus 360, EDC-the Entrepreneurship Development

cell, etc. which you can be a part of.

Joining a society has manyvisible and not so visible

    benets. While you get to

    interact with people with

    similar interests and goals,

    you also build your per-

    sona. You build your skills

    and learn management

    lessons. You learn to work

    in groups and balance

    collecve and individual

    acon. You get the power

to mould your life as you

    want. Needless to say,

    there is always a strong

    bond of friendship among

the members of anysociety, which grows stronger with each collecve iniave that the society undertakes. The inter-

personal skills you develop through the exposed plaorm, helps you in the long run especially when

you sit for your placements or may be higher studies.

Agnes DeMille once said, I learned 3 important things in college - to use a library, to memorize

quickly and visually and to drop asleep at any me given a horizontal surface and een minutes.

Add exams, iniaves and the fun and frolic with friends; what you get is a cocktail of a special col-

lege life. Get acquainted with the mantra of Sleep, Studies, Sociees, friends - balance them all

and youll have a great stay at the college.

The quality of a university is measured more by the kind of students it turns out, than the kind it

takes in. Make yourself worthy enough to be called an alumnus of this instuon aer 4 years. Start

working from the rst day itself. Make the best use of your fun me.

    FESTSCHROMA & JUBILANCE

    2012 ISSUE

A college fesval is a conu-

ence of all the moments that

promise to endow you with a

    bizarre exhilaraon, an aura of

    vigour, dynamism and colours.

    Scary notes, threatening exams,

    consequent insomniacs all are

    engulfed by the enthralling and

mulcoloured fests. It is the mewhen the jacks and geeks of all

spheres come out to enjoy in the

    energec spirit of exploring the

real fun of college life. The me

you get to appreciate all those

vibrant remarks made on life at

    NSIT. NSIT celebrates three ma-

    jor fests- Resonanz, Innovision &

    Moksha.

    Resonanz, the annual intra cul-

    tural fest commences the fesve

season at NSIT with the display

    of co-operaon between the

    seniors and their freshers. Aer

    the arduous mid semester ex-

ams, we revived for the mes of

    our lives with Resonanz11. The

    preparaons for the fest started

    aer its invigorang orienta-

on. The two days of fest came

in what seemed like seconds. The fest was adorned with a

plethora of events, roping in all

    literary, cultural and technical

events. The the crux of the fest

    was formed by the mega events;

    Natyamanch and Panache on

Day 1, Rangmanch Mr. & Ms.

Reso and Zephyr night on Day 2.

    In Natyamanch, students from

    each branch presented a play.

While some gave a social mes-

sage, others had the crowd burst

    into laughter. Panache was a

    spectacular event,

    wherein models walked the ramp,

    oozing condence. Rangmanch had

students from each branch dance to

    bollywood numbers and bhangra,

with the crowd cheering avidly for

those on the stage. During Mr. &

    Ms. Resonanz, parcipants danced

    elegantly, sung beaufully and an-

    swered quesons very condently.

The fest ended with the Zephyr

night as the Prabha band set re

on the stage. We sll relish those

    jubilant memories of the fest.

Aer a week from the beginning

of the even semester, we geared

up for the preparaons of another

    fest. The well acclaimed techno-

managerial fest, Innovision 2012.The two day annual inter college

fest was scheduled on 18th& 19th

    February. The fest enraptured the

    college with events, capvang

    talks and workshops. There were

    technical, literary, managerial and

    a few cultural events. Technical

    events like robo-wars, black pearl

and carnage were huge crowd pull-

ers and acquainted us with the fun

part of technology. At the same

    me, certain informal events like

    treasure hunt, musical chairs,

    tambola saw huge parcipaon.

Not to forget the most revelling

    part of the mornings, Columbus

    ride, the gaming zone-virtual arena,

    go-karng and zorbing. Innovision

2012 came up with a new dimen -

sion- Biovision, thanks to the enthu-

    siasc students of Bio-Technology.

    The organizing team worked per-

fectly to make this new found event

and the whole fest a huge success.

Icing on the cake was the defence

expo, roller hockey and laser show,

    when each soul was invigorated

with energy and a bizarre enthusi-

    asm. Innovision 2012 ended with

    Felicity- band performances by

    some notable bands; Jehovah, Ar-

cane Decepon, Urban Soundscapeand Rise of Uncertainity. Although,

some minor glitches did creep in,

the fest was a huge success and

    gave everyone immense opportu-

nies to pursue their technical or

    managerial prowess.

During all this me, the fourth year

students had been working for the

most prodigious cultural fest of the

year, Moksha. May be a parody,

but Moksha is more famous than

NSIT itself. Such is the impression

    of Moksha. The preparaons for

the fest started two months be-

fore the fest. In no me, a bizarre

    enthusiasm was endowed in

every nook and corner of the col-

    lege. The colourful descripon

provided by the seniors and the

    fervour with which they spoke

    about the fest made everyone

want to work for it. With that,

    everyone geared up for some

more acon. All that one could

    see was sparkles and fevicol

scaered in the ne arts room, a

    bunch of students seeking spon-

    sors, event managers running to

the admin now and then, caus-

ing a lot of commoon, creat-

ing an aura of dynamism andvigour. And then came those

    3 most wonderful days; 15th,

    16th and17th March. The fest

    encompassed over 100 events.

We got to see Bhukkad Gali in

Moksha 2012, a treat for all the

    foodies. The theatre sociees of

    several colleges displayed some

amazing plays in the Main Audi.

Overall, the fest was a delight for

everyone, a perfect place to be

at. Once again, the most promi-

    nent aspect remained the mega

    events-

    Mudra, Rouge, Street Dance,

    Dhwani, Oorja and ofcourse. Fahren-

ite. Mudra - a delight to watch the

    music and rhythm appending with

    the most graceful movements of

dance. All glam quoent levels were

surpassed as models walked on the

ramp in Rouge. Street Dance, well

lets just say it brought in Step up 4 at

NSIT. Dhwani was a major success as

    the singers mesmerized the audience

    with their stupendous voices. Oorja

brought in the best dancing teams

    from several colleges, aracng a

huge crowd to watch those astound-

    ing performances.

    The most happening event was

Fahrenite, when KK performed in theMoksha ground; some very memo-

    rable moments. The adrenaline lev-

els went higher as he sang the most

beauful songs. The realm of the

fest was so colourful that it took us

all over. Moksha lived up to its name

and had each of us oang over the

beauful lyrics, the rhythm, the mu-

sic; it was the me when each soul

    got revitalized with emoons and

love for each of our friends.

    running away from the

    Christmas ghosts will only

    to crash over your head.

    These fears and uncertain-

    if you dont overcome these

Yes you do! We all do. But only

few are really able to foster

these dreams into realies. If he

can do it, why not you? No one

    FROM THE DESK OF A

SEASONED NSITIANRoshan Shankar is a name that

needs no introducon in the col-

    lege. His work speaks volumes

about him. He is the recipient

    of various scholarships and

awards including NTSE, JSTS andwas shortlisted among the Top

17 students in India who were

    considered for the presgious

    Rhodes Scholarship at Oxford.

He got accepted at Stanford Uni-

    versity for his post-graduaon,

but he wears this crown lightly.

We had an impromptu chat with

    him, about his life, ambions,

and all that he looks forward to.

    Excerpts from the interview:

    He is prompt to

    answer this one

    and says that en-

    gineering was his

    rst choice and he

    had absolutely nosecond thoughts

    about this. He felt

    that any liberal arts

    degree could

be replicated via reading anywhere and wanted to

do something fun in math and computer science.

    ENGINEERING

    MY FIRSTCHOICE

There is no denying the fact that we at NSIT love to make undue com-

parisons, which is something that must be avoided. As Roshan averred

We are NSIT and thats it. Whether we like it or not, we are not the

toast of the town. Comparisons with the IITs/NITs are inevitable but it

is a great disservice to the work we do if we brood more me over the

comparison rather than doing actual work. Instead of comparing your-

self to others, create the habit of comparing yourself to you. The great

heights that iniaves at NSIT have reached like the coders at G-Soc

and the ICPC performances, the NSIT Quiz Clubs wins throughout India,

being the rst host of a TEDx in Delhi werent products of Have-they-

done-it-at-IIT-lets-replicate-it but were robust student iniaves.

Roshan did not sit for the campus placements

and was never inclined towards taking the CAT.

He says that his clarity of goals made the deci-

sion easier for him. His sincere advice to the

juniors: Instead of blindly following the band-

wagon, chalk out your interests and make a

decision as early as possible. This would really

help you in the long run.

When asked about his Stanford admit and how he managed this stupendous

feat, he replies very modestly, I dont understand why people have over-

rated an admit to a college. No doubt it is a good college but it is not every-

thing. He further states, If looking for a Masters program, dont put your ef-

forts hunng for that glamorous internship but put more sweat towards your

research experience which is what really counts. Roshan has published ve

research papers in a wide array of subjects like Business, Economics, game

theory and Computer Science as well.

Even his corporate internship choices have been in strict correlaon with his

interests like at IBM, The Economist Intelligence Unit and HDFC Bank. His

Learn to accept cricism. Accept the fact that others may see something that you dont. Instead of taking it

personally and holding grudges, ask what you can learn from this cricism. And if it is just out of spite then

chuck it. One of the reasons the clubs Ive worked in are successful is because we have an annual cricism

meet, which paves the way more the coming years improvement. The brilliant stage design spearheaded by

Rohil Sinha at TEDxNSIT 2011, the decision to hold Abhimanyu-the rst years quiz with prizes to connect with

rst years, the need for a quick C2N magazine and forming dierent Gomcha teams, were all outcomes of such

    sessions.

Do something for the college without bothering about tles or personal resume gains. This has helped in

    many strange and small ways!

Leadership is overrated. At mes its excellent to be a good follower and contribute to causes that others

    have espoused.

Make the best of your college years. The mosh-pits, nightouts, class cricket, football and admin bashing

among other things are not going to come back!

advice to the juniors, try and be aware of the projects going on at NSIT/IIIT Delhi/IIT Delhi or any other uni-

versity you can get access to. And get involved in the one which matches your interest and NEVER join one just

    to gain some resume points.

IFE@B-SCHOOLSharat Nambissan graduated from NSIT in the batch of 2010 and is presently pursuing MBA from IIM-

Ahmedabad. Here, he talks about life at a B-School and how he got inclined towards the management

    eld.

You graduated as an engineer and would soon complete your MBA from the most presgious B-School in

the country. Did you plan it this way?

I had never planned to do an MBA, but yes it was one of the alternaves that I had considered before

joining NSIT. There was no denite approach as such. I was as confused as the average entrant to an un-

dergraduate, and tried to push the decision making as far into the future as possible. The realisaon that

I should denitely give a shot at management educaon occurred to me around a year before I gave my

    CAT exam.

What embarked your interest towards a career in Management?

I do not come from a business family, and hence, never had any insights about the value of a management

career, apart from the ones derived from mass media. A career in management was highly valued in the

job market and society and paid good remuneraon. Besides, the nature of work dealt with day to day

praccal life problems. These noons helped forge my interest towards a management career.

What was your strategy while preparing for CAT?

About an year before the CAT, I started giving a few mock tests to see where I stood. The results were fairly

opmisc and I got a feeling that I stood a decent chance. I tried to go through the study material pertain-

ing to mock CAT preparaon. There werent too many new concepts but a beer approach, while solving

certain problems, was highlighted by the material.

I also joined a mock cat a few months before CAT. This helped in assessing my performance with respectto others.

How has your experience been at IIM-A? What are the various situaons, events and tasks that you come

across on a day- to-day basis?

IIM-A was an altogether new world for me. First year students at IIM generally have very lile me to do

much beyond studying their course subjects. Whatever lile me is le is taken up by sleep and extra-

curricular acvies. At IIM-A, the case based method ensures that you have something to read up and pre-

pare on a daily basis. Professors vary in their degree of strictness, but the expectaon of coming prepared

to class is evident. Surprise quizzes keep people on their toes all the me.

Second year is much more spread out and gives people the opportunity to explore their areas of interest.

Aer the rigor of the rst year, it is a welcome change for most students.

Quite a few students do become cynical and resenul about management educaon aer coming here,

partly due to the unnaturally high workload and lack of me to grasp everything that is being taught. As-

tronomical salaries, extremely intelligent peers and great faculty are all very true, but seem to be slightly

overhyped in the outside world. This i s sad because these overbearing labels tend to shi aenon away

from some of the really good things that one can experience at a B-School (excellent academic and non-

academic resources, plenty of opportunies to form good friendships, some great exchange program etc.)

and some of the hype and hero worship surrounding our management instuons needs to come down so

that students can have raonal expectaons from what they will get out of the course.

What type of training and educaon does a B-School intend to impart?

The courses taught at a B-School can be roughly divided into Finance and Accounng, Economics, Opera-

ons, Organizaonal Behaviour, Markeng, Business Policy and Miscellaneous categories. In the rst year,

courses pertaining to all categories are taught. In second year, students are free to make their own choices.

Class Parcipaon (CP) is considered an important component. Thus, contribung to the lectures is a gen-

eral requisite to do very well in a course. Besides CP, students are evaluated on assignments, projects and

    presentaons made in class.

Many engineering students are tempted towards non-technical eld and their focus shis towards MBApreparaon, from the very early days of graduaon. So, who should actually be looking towards an MBA?

What qualies does a B-School look for in a potenal candidate?

It is not anyones prerogave to dictate who should or shouldnt go for an MBA. However, to gain the most

out of an MBA, one should be able to relate the course knowledge to something seen in the world of busi-

ness. In this sense, it is sll a bit unfortunate that a signicant chunk of the students at Indian B-schools are

freshers. Aer having been through one and a half years of courses, I am of the opinion that the learning

is much greater if one has worked in an organisaon and can relate the theorecal concepts to something

    seen in pracce.

Of course, experience is not a prerequisite in Indian B-schools. The qualies looked at include quantave

ability, communicaon skills and a good track record in school and undergrad.

While studying at NSIT, which acvies were you a part of and how did these help you in achieving your

    ulmate aim?

I enjoy quizzing and thus was an integral part of the NSIT Quiz Club. Quizzers are looked at as favourable

candidates for management educaon because of the breadth of knowledge possessed and the passion to

know more about new, unknown elds. This, in turn, is also an essenal component of B-school educaon.

Ideally, what type of acvies (events, projects, sociees, and internships) would help in enhancing an

MBA aspirants resume? From a recruiters point of view, the most valuable skills on the resume include: relevant work experience

(Job/ Internship), a good academic track record, posions of responsibility held in college/work life and

diversity in the set of extra-curricular acvies pursued. How good you need to be depends on the set of

peers you are compeng with. In some of Indias best B-schools, one needs to be unmatched in some as-

pects, or really good in all of them for a stand-out resume.

What would be your advice for the rst year students at NSIT?

Take interest in the subjects taught at NSIT. You are engineers rst, and all career decisions should ideally

have lesser priories than the one you are following at present. Academic performance is important and

hence, exams should be taken seriously. Beyond this, NSIT oers lots of free me to pursue extra-curricular

acvies, projects or internships. Experiment with dierent things in your rst two years, and see what

you are comfortable with. By third year, hopefully, you would have some idea on what you should do be -

    yond engineering.
