Schools across the District are marking Autism Acceptance Month in many different ways this year. From hand-made ribbons and colorful t-shirts to themed bracelets and posters, staff and students are making a concerted effort to put an emphasis on Autism Acceptance. AFTON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Demark, together with fellow teachers at other schools, are planning a special event this month called H.O.P.E. (Helping Others Protect Earth) to celebrate Earth Day on April 22nd.

In anticipation of this special day, all K-5 Afton students participated in grade level Google Meets on March 19th. Special area teachers shared two activities they are hoping students could complete prior to the Earth Day celebration. First, each student at Afton has the opportunity to design their very own Earth Day button. Second, all students have been learning about the 4 Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Repair) and contributing family photos through a Google Form to showcase the 4 Rs in action outside of school. More coverage on Earth Day at Afton and other schools will be featured in the next issue of this newsletter!

SPARK teachers Kristin Slota (Afton) and Lynn Holmes (Edgewood) share the following news about the study of algae at both schools: “During the months of March and April, fourth and fifth grade students at Afton and Edgewood have been taking the role of phycologists, scientists who study algae. Through the Algae Academy, a program that teaches students basic facts about algae and how algae may

one day be the solution for the world’s energy shortage, students had the opportunity to participate in a unique learning experience. The program provides teachers with lesson plans,

student worksheets, Google Slides, videos, and other curriculum materials free of charge. Teachers at both elementary schools were given free STEM kits that included all the materials that students would need to grow algae and measure algae growth in their classroom: these included algae samples, skirted falcon tubes, flasks, pipettes, and secchi sticks. Three additional live algae samples were also shipped to teachers so that students could observe other species of algae on slides under the microscope.”

Sophia Santiago (center), a Charles Boehm student, was selected to receive a U.S. flag as a gift from Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick

in conjunction with a recent character award. Also pictured are Sophia’s mother and grandmother.

Ms. Slota and Ms. Holmes added: “It was exciting to see how thrilled students were when they were able to observe the algae under the microscope in what they thought was just a drop of water. Some classes were also given an algae snack to taste too! Other classes had the time to plan and present their own Algae Company to the rest of the group. The goal of the program is to utilize algae as a tool to effectively teach students science skills like measuring liquids, measuring algae growth, analyzing data, and making connections to the real world. After reviewing product labels, students are now aware that algae is an ingredient in many of the foods that we eat like ice cream, yogurt, salad dressing, pudding, almond milk, and also in products we use every day like toothpaste. The students have learned about the positive impact that algae can have on our environment and they now know that algae has the power to provide fuel for vehicles, create jobs, and provide oxygen and nutrition for animals, too!”

When Marissa Nalley, the Algae Foundation’s Director of Programs and Operations, was informed that Pennsbury elementary schools would be returning four days a week at the end of March with more than 85% of students attending in-person, she

was quick to send out additional supplies at no cost to the District so that all students could participate without having to share materials. “Thank you to Marissa and the rest of the

folks at the Algae Academy for providing such an amazing and authentic learning opportunity for the 4th and 5th grade students at Afton and Edgewood!” said Ms. Slota.

Sheila Miley, Fallsington’s Reading Specialist, planned a week of exciting events for Read Across America. Fallsington students and staff celebrated by reading books about designated themes each day. These themes included famous Americans, influential athletes, and different cultures. Staff and students also had the opportunity to further show their love for reading by dressing up as their favorite book characters. Ms. Miley led the way by dressing as The Very Hungry Caterpillar. The hallways were filled with book characters such as penguins, Edward Tulane, superheroes, pirates, Thing 1 and Thing 2, mice, and many more!

In conjunction with Read Across America, the Fallsington PTO kicked off a Read-A-Thon. During the two weeks of the Read-A-Thon, Fallsington students read over 146,955 minutes and raised over $7,900 for their PTO to support the school. “The students and staff did an amazing job. The two-week event focused on promoting a love for reading!” said Mr. DePaola.

Special Education teacher, Alyssa Sunday, shares that the Boehm community also participated in a “Rock Your Socks” salute to spread awareness and celebrate individuals with Down Syndrome. “March 21st (3/21) is World Down Syndrome Day,” explained Ms. Sunday. “This date was selected to signify the triplication of the 21st chromosome. Students and staff were encouraged to wear unique, bright, mismatched or otherwise interesting socks

On March 22nd, the Quarry Hill community “rocked their socks” for Down Syndrome Day. Quarry Hill raised $598.50 for the Down Syndrome Interest Group of Bucks County by wearing mismatched socks and the colors blue and yellow. Life Skills teacher Kristyn DeCarlo, in collaboration with Pamela Schoell, a parent of one of the students in her classroom, organized the event for Down Syndrome Awareness by providing read-alouds to be posted on each teacher’s Google classroom. Librarian Barb Pesature created an interactive Bitmoji classroom, which included the read-alouds and other videos about Down Syndrome and being kind. Paraprofessional Nicole Cordisco made shirts for staff to wear. The QH PTO then graciously

Kindergarten students in Cherie Lynne Kooker’s class enjoyed having a mystery reader on Dr. Seuss’ birthday. Fifth grade student, JT Hampton, from Ms. Gould’s class, read The Bad Seed to his sister Alivia’s Kindergarten class as his Paw Pride prize, awarded to him for his responsible behavior. “The Kindergarten students loved this special treat!” said Ms. Kooker.

Earlier this school year, Character.org reached out to Fallsington Elementary and asked for a video celebrating the school’s accomplishment as a 2020 National School of Character. The purpose of the video was to share what character means at Fallsington. A clip from the video was shared at the Character.org Virtual National Forum in March. “Special thanks to the students and staff in the video and Kristen Cahill, our School Counselor, for creating the video,” said Principal DePaola. “Boehmers celebrated Read Across America Week with a variety of events,” writes English Language Arts teacher, Heather Mengert. “Students had the opportunity to guess a mystery reader, dress up as their favorite characters, read poems and books on the announcements, exchange book reviews, and enter a poetry competition! This year’s poetry competition winner is 6th grader Ethan Huang.” Congratulations!

“Over 480 students – more than half of the William Penn student population – made academic honors for the second marking period,” reports Assistant Principal Dr. Michael Hogan. “This is a testament to the efforts and conscientiousness of our students as well as the dedication and willingness of our teachers to go above and beyond. Principal Christopher Becker, Administrative Intern Maria Gregory, and I congratulate those who made honors and encourage them as well as all of our students to continue to strive to meet and exceed their personal goals. Keep up the hard work! You make us proud and you should be proud of yourselves!”

In conjunction with the School District’s ongoing character education initiative, students are being spotlighted each month for possessing specific positive character assets. For the month of April, students are recognized for exemplifying the trait of “Integrity.” This month’s honorees are Riley Kopceuch, Rikita Nair, Hanna Reilly, and Alivia Hampton.

Alivia Hampton is in Kindergarten at Fallsington Elementary School and was nominated by Cherie Lynn Kooker, Christine Zimmerman, Amy Murray, Kristen Cahill, and Principal Vinny DePaola. They say that Alivia is a student a teacher can always depend on, who doesn’t behave because a teacher is watching, but does so because it is the right thing to do. She leads by example and is polite, studious, and thoughtful. She treats everyone with respect and kindness. She is an all-around amazing young student who demonstrates integrity every moment of every day.

Also at the elementary school level, the award goes to Ritika Nair, who is in the fourth grade at Eleanor Roosevelt Elementary School. Ritika was nominated by teachers, Maureen Janthor and Brian Doron. They say that Ritika embodies all the qualities that the students from Eleanor Roosevelt strive to demonstrate. She is respectful, responsible, and safe. She sets a high bar for herself and does not lower it for any reason. In her schoolwork she is honest and follows the guidelines set forth with her assignments and tests. In Physical Education class, Ritika shows up with a smile and tries her best, whatever the activity. She is a good example of a student successfully working through virtual learning and is a model of true integrity.

Hanna Reilly, an eighth grader at Charles Boehm Middle School, was nominated by Jeanne Caputo.

Felicia Hebenstreit, Director of Orchestras and the PHS Marching Band, shares the following good news: “Pennsbury High School was once again very well represented in the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association District 11 and All-State Band and Orchestras. Although there was not a live festival this year due to COVID, these students were able to participate virtually in these ensembles. Thank you to all who have helped these students develop into such fine young musicians. A huge congratulations goes out to these students!”

and Silver Award Girl Scouts are making the world a better place. The Gold Award, open only to Girl Scouts in high school, is the most prestigious and most difficult to earn award for girls in the world and requires a minimum of 80 hours to complete. The Silver Award is the highest honor a Girl Scout Cadette (6th-8th grade) can earn and requires a minimum of 50 hours to complete. Rebecca Smirk, a Service Unit Manager of Sandy Run #624 for the Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania, shares the following details for recent Pennsbury graduates as well as several current students. Each of the Girl Scouts listed below will be or were already honored at upcoming council-wide ceremonies.

Grace Burke, a 2020 graduate of Pennsbury High School and a member of Troop 2044, earned her Gold Award by completing a project focused on advocating for the rights of service animals and handlers. Grace plans to attend Temple University in Fall 2021. Grace filmed, edited, and published a series of four educational (but fun!) videos on her YouTube channel that educate the public about service dogs. Grace gives the viewers tips she learned along the way when she was searching for her prospective service dog in training. Grace hopes that if you are interested in learning more about service dogs, you will search for “Golden Irish SD” on YouTube! In earning her Gold Award, Grace completed the Trifecta, earning all three of Girl Scout’s highest awards – Bronze, Silver, and Gold.

Jessica McNeely, a 2020 graduate of Pennsbury High School, earned her Gold Award. In doing so, Jessica completed the Trifecta, earning all three of Girl Scout’s highest awards – Bronze, Silver, and Gold. Jessica worked with the Pennsbury elementary schools to provide interactive

presentations about the School District’s distinctive choral and vocal music programs. Jessica’s goal was to generate excitement around the music curriculum, encouraging students to either start or continue their musical journeys while attending Pennsbury schools.

Josie Stephens, a 2020 graduate of Pennsbury High School and a member of Troop 2044, earned her Gold Award by completing a project aimed at increasing awareness about Tourette Syndrome. Josie currently attends Arizona State University. Josie wrote a children’s story about Tourette Syndrome and created a program to teach children in elementary school about it. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Josie held virtual informational sessions focused on teaching children about Tourette Syndrome and answering their questions. In earning her Gold Award, Josie also completed the Trifecta, earning all three of Girl Scout’s highest awards – Bronze, Silver, and Gold.

Sophia Marthaler, a ninth grader at Pennsbury High School and a member of Troop 2105, earned her Silver Award by completing a project benefiting the Women’s Animal Center in Bensalem. Sophia and her team assembled dog toys and made tote bags out of t-shirts. Sophia provided new dog parents with a tote bag

containing a dog toy and instructions on how to make their own dog toys. Sophia, an animal lover, hopes that her dog toys bring boundless joy to dogs and helps pet owners enjoy time with their new pets.

Juliet Labrecque, an eighth grader at Pennwood Middle School and a member of Troop 21327, earned her Silver Award by completing a project benefiting Sunrise Assisted Living in Yardley. Juliet and her team made 200 face masks. The face masks were sewn JessicA mcneely
